Is Chris Smalling likely to be at United on 1st September?
I can't see him starting in a fully fit United team and as it's a world cup year naturally he would want to play every week.

Hopefully not, I've been saying for years he's our worst defender.

Long season and injuries will happen. Why do we want to sell someone we don't need to and can play his part as part of the squad.

He can do a job at right back if absolutely necessary too. I'd hold on to him as a good squad player.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Southampton come in for him if they sell VVD. They're supposedly after Ben Gibson (£30m) but surely Smalling will be cheaper and has loads more experience.

I think you're being too kind in acknowledging him as a defender, Rewz.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left before the window closes.

He is 5th choice CB behind Bailly, Lindelof, Jones and Rojo. There is an argument that Blind and Tuanzebe could be ahead of him too. Personally I would rather give Tuanzebe minutes than play Smalling.

At RB even with so few specialist RB's in our squad he would be behind Valencia, Bailly, Lindelof and possibly Tuanzebe who played RB against Alexis Sanchez last season better than any RB I saw against him last season.

Plus in all likelihood of him waiting until such an injury crisis happened that would allow him time on the pitch he himself would also probably be injured. Plus he nobbled Jones last season when Jones was making a starting spot his own. Not only is he a liability on the pitch but he is as likely to injure himself or someone else off the pitch.

Time for him to move on.
