Good performance but when ireland go behind a goal it's hard to see them getting anything out of a game.
Have to win the next 2 games.

Well Wales v Ireland is important next lads. Wales winning games which is important from my point of view. What's the play off situ eds, is it all second place teams?

WRD, not all second place teams get through to the play offs.

As there's 9 groups, the second place team with the worst record do not qualify for a play off spot. It's close, and there's still games to go, but as it stands it would be either Wales or Bosnia that would suffer.

Nope, I think it's the best 8 2nd placed teams.

Eight of the nine group runners up qualify with the team with the lowest points in second place not qualifying . However points won against the sixth place team in a group will not count in the final calculation, in Wales and Ireland's case that would be Moldova.

dont worry leahy, we always find a way, anything is possible with the blessed saint martin in charge.

There are countless possible permutations but the most likely is Ireland must win both remaining games and hope Bosnia don't beat Belgium .
Wales could make it with 4 points providing Bosnia take no points from Belgium .
Currently the group has the ninth placed best runner up which would not get either into the playoffs and Belgium beating Bosnia in another group greatly eases either teams chances. Other teams could be dragged into it but that is the most likely scenario as it stands. nearly all second placed teams have taken maximum points from the sixth place team in each group and these points are discounted at the final count . One other scenario which would help Wales but not Ireland is Moldova getting ahead of Georgia though that's unlikely . Clear as mud.

So pointless playing Moldova at all then, why don't they just leave it as team with least points, meddling around. So it's come to this, us needing to beat each other.

I think the idea was some bad teams are way worse than other bad teams, at the start it was maybe better for Ireland and Wales for results against sixth placed teams not to count as Moldova aren't great but there better than Gibraltar or San Marino . Wales still needed those points as they still count in deciding how the group finishes it's just when the countback to see who were the ninth ranked runner up comes into play that they are deducted . Bosnia will lose there points to against gibraltar. Again only in the count back though all points count in how the group ends and are only lost later.

I think the over complicated format highlights the need for the six lowest ranked teams to play off and the winners entering qualifying then we would have 8 groups not 9 and a simple winner goes through, runners up play off scenario and and end to complete mis match fixtures.
