Interesting to see Lukaku linked with a move away, can't say I'd be upset. Who would you replace him with?

1.) 20 Apr 2019

This young talent from bradford called mason greenwood.

2.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 10:51:32
Thats one step in the right direction but i think he will stay this year and if he doesn't perform throughout the 2019/ 2020 season then he will be sold the following season.

3.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 11:21:11
I wouldn't say Lukaku needs replaced if sold, not like for like with another number 9 anyway. Rashford should be our CF and both Martial and Sanchez can play there.

Put the money towards another creative player, whether that be someone like Bruno Fernandes who would play centrally or a wide player like Sancho or Zaha. If Lukaku is sold for say £60m that probably cover the vast majority of the price tag for Fernandes and I'd take that.

4.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 12:10:18
No he would need to be replaced. You'd really go into a season with the inconsistent rashford, inconsistent and lazy martial, the flop Sanchez and the inexperienced greenwood? That's 1-2 injuries away from disaster.

5.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 12:10:51
I’d be concerned if we were to just have Rashford as an out and out striker. Don’t think he’s scored for about two months now, same with Lingard and Martial. Potential yes, prolific no.

6.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 12:55:18
I’d be looking for someone like Icardi or Piatek to come in. We aren’t prolific as we are.

Ole has learnt his trade in sides with 4 top strikers available. I’m sure he would want a minimum of 3.

7.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 12:55:21
If we sold lukaku we wouldn't go out and buy a big name striker with rash at the club .
If lukaku leaves and I don't think he will any striker will need to accept at the very least he will share duties with rash just like lukaku is having to .
Be careful what you wish for.

8.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 13:13:29
Lots for ole to ponder. We simply can't sell everyone although there are question marks over nearly everyone.
I would have thought that lukaku would be further down the list than many. But i suppose it depends on the player and if offers come in.

9.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 13:33:15
I think it would be harsh to sell him. If we end up in the Europa League we’re going to be playing the likes of Young Boys on a Thursday followed by Norwich on a Sunday.

Those are the teams that Lukaku does well against.

I think he’d be a good option and nobody can really fault his work rate. He’s just not good enough to do it against world class centre halves.

{Ed002's Note - Young Boys will be in the Champions League.}

10.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 13:34:24
Apart from Fresh no ones said a big name striker though Jred. I'm sure there are plenty out there we could consider. Especially someone who would be different to Rashford so that whoever starts a game then the other on the bench offers a plan b.

11.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 13:35:09
I would go into next season with that as a front line. If we really want Rashford to become top class, he needs to be 1st choice playing in his preferred position every week.

If we did sign someone it would have to be someone who accepts being a back up and clearly isn't going to be first choice. Personally, I don't think it matters what we do in the summer, we won't win the league next season as we are a long way back, so I'd rather see the minutes that would go to a back up be given to Sanchez playing through the middle and even a small chunk of time given to Greenwood. A quality creative midfielder would be much more use to us than a Lukaku replacement in my opinion.

12.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 13:42:16
I know we shouldn't talk about money but.

Pogba for £150m, Lukaku £70m and De Gea £70m would go a long way funding signings like Sancho, Koulibally etc.

13.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 14:09:37
We won't buy a better player than lukaku imo.

14.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 14:21:37
But isn't Lukaku our top scorer this season having played significantly less than Rashford this season? hasn't Rashford been playing centrally ever since Ole took charge? He hasn't uprooted any trees to be honest and simply isn't good enough to lead the line. Thd only thing going for him is the locality he was born in. You take out his birth certificate and most of the talent in the boy will suddenly vanish. Lukaku for me is the most natural striker that we have right now and it would be stupid to let him leave without another class striker coming in.

15.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 14:48:41
I don't get the lukaku hate.

Yes his touch is poor but give him chances he scores goals

If we sell him and stick with rashford and martial as the strikers we are screwed.

16.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 14:27:31
Until after the group stages 002 😝.

{Ed002's Note - I rather doubt Manchester United will be in the competition then.}

17.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 15:12:59
what if we were selling a striker that wasnt Lukaku?
Rashford hasn't set the world alight has he? And reportedly getting a touch of the "Chesney Hawkes " syndrome. Sanchez will be difficult to shift. just saying!

18.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 15:19:21
Lukaku needs to be used as a striker not the right of a 3 to accommodate a inconsistent duo of martial or rashford. Lukaku needs to be the RVN forget first touches he needs to be a goal scorer first and foremost.
I would personally keep him over the more money fame hungry other 2.

You can tell lukaku is the type to buckle down and work hard he has done it all his career, the other 2 YouTube highlight reelers aren’t cut out to be at the very top.

19.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 15:33:24
At the age of 25 lukaku has 187 club goals and 45 international goals .
Something daft like 22 in 25 games for Belgium. The lad will score goals in the right set up.

20.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 16:17:21
Personally I’m a big fan of Lukaku. Think he gets far too much stick. He’s a goal machine if used correctly.

21.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 16:43:43
Touché 002.

22.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 16:44:17
Rashford is still not clinical, misses far too many chances to be leading a top side.
He also seems to lack the instincts of a top striker.
But he has time in his side to improve.
Lukaku should be kept in the team for competition.

23.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 16:46:50
Lukaku would be a long way down the list of players I would sell this summer. Talented and hard working with the right attitude. Yes his first touch isn't great, but there isn't a better finisher at the club.

It would be silly to sell him and not replace him. Considering the other areas we need to sell players and buy players for it seems madness to add another strikers to that list.

Keep him one more season and see how Rashford, Martial and Greenwood do this season. Then make a judgement next summer as to sell Lukaku and if he needs replacing.

Some of our fans are so fickle.

Lukaku at everton was known to be a goal scorer, clinical, lethal in the air. Not for his ability to dribble past players and his touch. We knew what we were getting when we signed hi so we can't expect him to suddenly change albeit his overall gameplay has improved vastly since joining us showing he puts in the work. If we want to get the best out of him then we need deliveries in the box which we struggle to do.
It was like when people called berbatov lazy but that was his style of play. If we want a striker who can do it all himself and bag goals then we buy that player. too many times we call out on a signing when we try adapt them to a style which they can't play and end up not playing to their potential.

Option 1 - sign fullbacjks and wingers who provide width and therefore deliveries that can actually reach the box and lukaku can attack.

Option 2- If we get rid, we must go for griezmann, can play an inverted RF or striker.

United addict
Rash does seem to get away with a lot on the site .
He has played CF this season for a large part 21 starts in the league 7 as sub 1933 minutes played 10 goals .
Look at the stick martial gets but played out wide 17 starts 7 as sub 1482 minutes played 10 goals .

26.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 18:27:25
Agreed jred. Rashford may be talented but when it comes to goal scoring, he needs a massive improvement. As of now if we compare Rashford to Lukaku and Martial purely in goal scoring prowess, he would be a distant 4th behind the mentioned 2 and another unknown. He misses way too many clear cut chances which the other 2 would score aplomb. I still think we missed a trick by not sending him out on loan when he was breaking through.

To get the best out of Lukaku, we need to invest in a player who can pick a cross into the box, or look to play Dalot forward because he has a lovely delivery on him. But one cannot expect Rashford to score from crosses.

I think lukaku would benefit from a good number 10, I see him as a on the shoulder striker, he will thrive on through balls imo.

28.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 19:17:17
Lukaku would surely benefit from decent wide players that get good early crosses in. He is one of the type of signings I referred to the other day - we seem to buy players who play a certain way elsewhere then play them in a different position or ask them to play a different way. Lukaku needs to play as a proper no.9 imo.

29.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 19:23:13
Agreed Jred. Lukaku is at his best running onto thru balls behind the defense. The problem is we don't have anyone who can play them although it might be worth seeing if Sanchez could perform that role.

Rashford has been inconsistent but he didn’t play at CF until Ole arrived. Before then he was either out wide or a sub. The narrative that he has failed at CF is plain silly. Let’s look at who we have?

Lukaku - goal scorer but little else. Awful first touch, relies on through balls where he can be on the shoulder of the last defender, not suited to how Ole apparently wants to play.

Martial - perfect for Ole’s preferred style but massively inconsistent. Probably the most natural finisher but attitude issues and laziness holding him back.

Rashford - huge potential but currently inconsistent and failing to deliver on it, rumours of a billy big boots attitude emerging.

Having said that, Rashford never stops running or trying, Lukaku and Martial drift in and out of games, if I was keeping one of the most it would be Rashford every day.

Compare all you like, Lukaku doesn’t foto our needs, Martial is moody and lazy, Rashford looks committed but inconsitent. Not a great review of our striking options but Rashford every day for me.

31.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 20:18:50
I agree. I was adamant had we got someone like perisic at the time, it would have greatly benefited someone like Lukaku. Good player, hard working, good attitude. Wouldn't like to see him leave.

32.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 20:22:47
Lukaku’s first touch is not the best so I get the criticism that people give him.
However for people on here to start suggesting that selling him is a good idea just makes me realise how little people actually know about the game and players.
Lukaku has to ultimately be judged on goals and his record both at Utd and prior to joining speaks for itself. His international record also is very good and so he does it on all levels.
Against West Ham he was playing out wide and I watched him deliver a good cross into the box where no Utd player attacked. Martial didn’t gamble and make a run in anticipation and so nothing cane of it. If that ball was played in and Lukaku was in the middle he would of attacked it. Why because that what strikers who score 20+ goals a season do, that’s how they score that number of goals.
Rashford is a better player but at the moment Lukaku is the best striker we have at the club. You need to appreciate the difference.
We have so many other players that we need to get rid of and replace before we worry about Lukaku.
A quality RB, CB and RW would be a start!

33.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 20:38:07
Ajh
I actually rate all 3 of them, all have good and bad points like most players but not a lot between them this season imo . Which is why I'm always surprised people rate one and not the other?
For various reason all 3 could of done better this season but it does seem to be one rule for one one rule for another sometimes .

34.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 21:43:21
My take on our striking options is Lukaku was a bit of a flat track bully when we bought him, he still is but he's pretty likely to outscore rash or martial over a season if all three had a season as central striker
I think martial as a central striker would score more than rashford as he's a better finisher, but he'd still drive people mad over his perceived lack of effort and the constant feeling of he can be better than this .
I think rashford would be the least prolific, however work the hardest and if we do want to press from the front the most suited .

35.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 22:23:58
If you want to promote a young player you need to create space for them in the squad, you can't just sign experienced players and block their pathway.

If we are committed to playing one up front then rashford, martial and greenwood will be enough. Better strengthening in wide areas and actually playing someone on the right hand side of the pitch.

36.) 20 Apr 2019
20 Apr 2019 23:26:41
You could probably argue the best thing we could do is set the team up to best utilise Lukaku. If we played to his strengths we'd probably score more goals. Not sure it would be the kind of football we want, but we might end up with more points.

37.) 21 Apr 2019
21 Apr 2019 12:27:38
My thoughts are no one will buy Sanchez we need to get of one striker on big wages to buy the striker midfielder and defender. we need. I don’t think we have room in our wage bill other wise.
