Been reading this site for about 6 years just stumbled on it to be fair just wondering what everyone's thoughts are about next season would people be happy with getting in to top 4 then keep building on that this is not going to be a quick fix for us.

Yes, Liverpool and City are far ahead of us but Spurs and Chelsea could lose their managers in the summer and Chelsea have a transfer ban and Arsenal, well they are constantly in transition.

The opportunity is there for us to catch up but we need a change of culture at the club. A quality DoF who is not a Woodward puppet, an overhaul of scouting and coaching, rotten eggs in the squad dealt with ruthlessly and quality signings made including a couple of vocal leaders. Not necessarily big money signings, but the right signings with the right attitude, if they cost over 100m that's what we need to pay, if we can get them for less than 10m great.

It is a lot to happen before August and is probably mainly dependent on Woodward putting the club first not accumulating more power into his own hands. which doesn't fill me with confidence.

If it gets even 2-3 years now to become a well working football club then I don't care.
But I do not want us to go out and sign players like Fred or di Maria.

Given how low the bar is at the moment i would be happy if we achieved three things next season.

1.) Have full backs who can consistently overlap that attackers and put in successful crosses.

2.) Have centre backs who are not the chuckle brothers and can play out from the back with calmness and poise.

3.) Have a holding midfielder who can screen the back 4 without looking like he's playing in quicksand and can actually pass the ball forwards consistently.

If we do those three things well its been a successful season in my book regardless of league position.

I think we need to stop kidding ourselves and count ourselves lucky that we have finished where we have.
The club needs a total refit, top to bottom. The problem is there is so much work to be done, it will take longer than one summer.
Feels like when SAF first took over the club. It was in a mess really and had players that were not 'United Players' in terms on mentality and understanding what it means to represent the club.
Ole, Butt, Carrick and Phelan can no doubt spot if someone has the mentality to be a United player. Always running, never say die, always expect that last chance to come and expect us to put it away when it does.
Thing is, it took SAF a good 5 years to sort it. Granted, some of our youth looks special i.e Greenwood but make no mistake, there is a lot of work to be done.
We all agree we coukd get rid of about 6 players without shedding a tear. I just don't trust the powers above to move out the dead wood and sign the players needed. I have totally lost faith in that side of the club. It feels like the blind leading the blind.

People seem to forget that Liverpool finished fourth and 25 points off the pace last season. it's not beyond the realms of fantasy that with a few decent signings and not dropping silly points (which has cost Utd dearly) that they could be in the mix next season. Utd need to offload some of the playing staff though. the defence has proved itself incapable over the last couple of years ( this one especially) it requires disbanding. it's not fit for purpose. It would be easy if that was the only area that required attention but we have a lazy arsed midfield and an attack that couldn't finish its breakfast. The players are out there that could make a difference. Liverpool have proved that making a team that works for each other and can find each other with a pass doesn't take billions to put together, some of them from lower placed clubs.
That said we have 'car crash' Ed at the helm. so none of this will happen.
