Maybe its just me but I reckon we need to look at hard at recruitment for next season.
I watched the All the Goals -Ruud Van Nistelrooy on MUTV this morning. We used to attract the best and sharpest players -now we are lucky to get second raters on loan. What has happened?
Are we always going to be looking back at the Good Old Days under Fergie? - with countless re-runs on MUTV.

Nope.

According to ed002, we are seen as a step down for top players. That probably has something to do with it.

it goes in cycles especially in England with it being so competitive in England now with more than just a few clubs able to attract the best players.

but its always good to have a mix of players.

MOTZ1, did we? We got RvN after he had a serious knee injury and other clubs wanted to wait a season to see how he recovered.

When did we sign the world's best players? Veron maybe fits into that bracket. But I'm struggling to think of who else.

We used to sign the best players in the EPL, which was a good tactic as it strengthens us while weakening a rival and you know the player is already settled in England. It's something Bayern Munich still do to great effect.

However, in the EPL the prize and TV money is far more evenly distributed. Meaning that if you want to sign one of the best CDM's in the league you will be paying Leicester 80m+ for Ndidi or 70m+ to West Ham for Rice.
While we would have little chance of buying off of another top six side as they just won't sell to us, just as we won't sell to them. Certainly not a player either side feels will actually improve the other side.

The market has changed, we can pay well over the odds for players already in the EPL or take a chance on players outside of England. However, the biggest names have never flocked to Manchester United. We have tended to sign young players with potential and then help make them a top star rather than buying the ready made world class players.

We had agreed to sign RvN before his knee injury so what are you talking about.
