I can't see us over spending this summer given the C.V. hit to finances. We have a need for a left sided CB but if we can't afford an expensive one and target other positions what are everyone's thoughts on Jan Vertonghen on a free? Yes he is 33 so not long term and wouldn't block Mengi and gives us a chance to recruit elsewhere if money is tight.

I am not going to pretend I have watched him closely but as a left sided CB would he be a short term option? Over to those who have watched him more closely than me.

Im not against 1 year stop gaps and getting an experienced player in for cover redman in fact with our young team it well advised imo.
But its got to be a player with the right character and ability.
Ive liked him over the years he has been a good defender but is a bit injury prone and lacks pace nowadays i would not have him top of my list for that type of signing.
If sancho comes in it leaves us with a very young forward line except for ighalo and its up front i think we lack experience and know how and options.
So if ighalo is not staying an experienced cf would by my preference for a signing of that type.
So i'm aligned with the thought process but not that particular target.

Thanks Remanutd I can’t say I have studied him but he was part of a solid Spurs defence at one point. We shall see what they do.

He's a bit past his best unfortunately. Was a great player a few years ago, but injuries haven't been kind to him over the last couple of years.

He's also not the quickest which with Maguire in our back line would still represent a big problem.

Understand the logic but its clear we need a specific type of centre back to play alongside maguire and vertonghen doesn't fit that bill.

I’d have said yes about two years ago, but he’s played no where near as much this season. If he was going to play say, 15-20 games in all comps then maybe he could work. But I think he will end up in Italy.

I disagree on us not overspending this summer and can actually see this being one of our biggest ever windows in terms of net spend.

We are one of only a handful of clubs who can still spend big this summer (even in spite of the impact that of C.V.) and this puts us in a position of power as many selling clubs are in desperate need of cash and competition for players will be much leaner than usual.

I still think we’ll probably end up paying over the odds for most of the players that we bring in (that’s become something of a defining characteristic of our club since EW came in), but I think we’d be foolish not to spend big and take advantage of the situation we find ourselves in.

He would be an upgrade on Maguire. Left footed too.
