Slightly confused over angel gomes. He’s left and signed for Lille then been loaned straight to boavista.

I thought he left as we couldn’t guarantee him game time at the club. But he’s happy to sign elsewhere and be loaned out? Strange one.

Obviously not as straight forward as I believed.

I think he left as no one at the club could give him a real development plan that ended up with him being in the first team.

At United he was told "work hard in training and your chances will come".

At Lille, he was told that they have a plan to develop aspects of his game during a year on loan in Portugal, probably dealing with the physical step up in senior football. While the regular game time at a higher standard will raise his game to the next level. Then back to France for another step up in quality and further development.

Fact is Gomes should have been on loan the moment he turned 18, he has been too good for the U23's for a solid two years. If you are being challenged then you are stagnating.

A loan when he turned 18 might have meant he was ready to contribute this season and he might have played more games and we would have seen less of Lingard and Pereira.

But he wasn't ready because the club didn't have a development plan to get him ready.

He maybe wasn’t ready because he wasn’t doing enough in training? You can map out futures etc but hard work is rewarded as well. Without being on the training pitch none of us really know why he didn’t play. Also, this is the second contract extension that was on the table. He signed his first one after months of speculation. He was 17/ 18 at that time too.

Gomes was expected to break into the first team a bit like greenwood etc . It never worked out for the lad, happens move on.

Club mismanagement.

Best of luck to him.

Shappy with all due respect surely you have no idea what development plan Utd had for Gomes and to suggest otherwise is simply misleading. You talk as though you are an authority on the subject but you can't possibly know how the academy is managed or its development plan for individual players.

You seem to be regurgitating and putting your own interpretation on something you believed you've read but choose to ignore the facts.

Pereria, Henderson and Tuanzebe have all been out on loan as have countless other academy prospects.

The academy may very well be failing our young players but in the absence of a detailed explanation of why or a model of best practice being used at other Clubs producing superior results we can only rely on the facts which are both overwhelming and irrefutable.

I am sure there are many areas where the academy can undoubtedly improve but it's success in producing players that go on to represent the first team is both impressive, enduring and is in fact a core value that permeates the entire Club.

Trusting in youth and giving young players a chance are values synonymous with Manchester United and there can be no greater incentive than that of opportunity and a core belief in youth. Road maps and development plans are of course very important but count for nothing if the Club doesn't present players with the opportunity or has the patience to give its young players a chance.

I always like reading your posts but I'm not sure your taking a balanced view on this topic. Gomes is merely one player from an academy of hundreds and I think many people are scratching their heads and trying to interpret the situation.

Gomes was supposedly one of our most talented and brightest academy prospects. We were led to believe that he was being courted by the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona who were going to present him with a development plan or road map into their first team and Utd were somehow responsible for mismanaging a generational talent. In reality he has signed for Lille and now finds himself on loan at Boavista! You are suggesting Lille have a masterplan to turn him into another superstar but all I see is another young player out on loan trying to make his own way in a ruthless game. I wish him all the best and hope he can realise his true potential!

He's not good enough to play for us at the minute, I hope the lad goes onto have a successful career but he expected too much too soon imo, he hardly pulled up trees in the game time he did get, I felt underwhelmed by him.

Gomes could have stayed and got five minutes at the end of last nights game.

Red Man - Last summer the manager sold our most prolific striker and sent out our highest paid player on loan to Inter Milan.

He placed his trust in academy prospects Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood so if that isn't a pathway into the first team or giving opportunities to young players than I have no idea what it looks like! If we sign Sancho this summer then we have an English front three with the potential and talent to represent the Club for the next decade whilst hopefully all developing together to help us challenge for the major trophies. If this trident does indeed go on to propel the Club to future glory it was born from a manager with the vision and courage to make bold decisions and ultimately place his faith in the academy.

I agree Mengi could possibly have been afforded more minutes and I'd also like to have seen Ethan Laid given a chance at full back but the manager assess the players every day in training and if he believes a more gentle introduction to first team football is advantageous then I trust his judgment.

My comment on Gomes was a little tongue in cheek. However, I don’t think Gomes got the chances he should have had. We will see if it comes back to bite us. Dalot seems to be on his way out as well. Laird would have been interesting

I am not saying fill the team with kids, but if I am one of our youth sat on the bench last night I would have been straining to get on, if given 5 mins I would have been annoyed and frustrated

Not sure you can have a more gentle intro than last night, with little pressure.

Red Man - I assumed it was a little tongue in cheek. Along with Shappy and many others I really respect and enjoy reading your posts. Sometimes I think we can all be guilty of failing to see the other side of the argument but this site wouldn't be as entertaining if we all thought the same way and we all ultimately want the same thing we just have different ideas on how to get there.

A very good post I totally agree .

Its good for young players to be around the squad, it can be a case of one step at a time .
I can remember brazil taking a young ronsldo to a world Cup and he didn't play a minute .
Samd people looking for something to bash the msnager about.

Brazil taking a young Ronaldo to the biggest tournament in the world is a bit different to giving a couple of youngsters half a game rather than 5 minutes in an already decided tie.

Gomes has definitely divided opinion. Never quite saw where he was going to fit into the system OGS plays? Was a 10, left forward, midfielder?

Interesting debate, we should have developed the talent, seen where it got to, worried about the system later. Systems come and go, talent if there, will push through if given the chance. Gomes was massively highly thought of from very young. Often they don’t develop, it can happen but I wanted to see a bit more of him and not sure he got the crack of the whip.

Then why did they try to keep him?

They'd have maybe tried harder if they thought he was good enough. I'm disappointed he left. Watched him from no age and thought he'd make it. But I don't see him everyday, so not up to me to ruminate over whether or not he got a fair go.

Maybe he’ll be the one that got away. I’m personally sorry he left the club - equally, he didn’t look all that when he played at senior level. Tough gig this football management.
