Could someone explain to me why, despite being seeded, we face potentially tricky CL opposition including a couple of real banana skins in monaco and lazio whereas celtic who aren't seeded will be facing 1 of 5 real minnows. Am i missing something?

1.) 06 Aug 2015 10:57:38
Seeding is based on the European co-efficient worked out by how well the team has done in previous years. Monaco are a relatively new team to the CL so they haven't got a good rating in the comp and Lazio haven't been in it for years so their rating has dropped.

2.) 06 Aug 2015 11:15:47
There is a different route for Champions of lesser nations thatln there is for the 4th place teams from bigger nations. I believe it's well explained on United's site and a few other places on the web.

3.) 06 Aug 2015 11:42:27
i think a match against fenerbahce would be nice.

4.) 06 Aug 2015 12:08:38
I wondered this last night as well but from what I can see is the last qualifying stage is divided by 'Champion Seeds' and 'League Seeds'

Hence Celtic being Scottish champions they are seeded differently.

Wes369 - Fenerbahce were knocked out last night

5.) 06 Aug 2015 12:16:07
Monaco would be very tricky as they are playing very well in pre season and have talented players. The only club in the French league who could get anywhere near PSG.
On a lighter note DIMARIA saying how happy he is to play for PSG. Wont be happy when playing in some cold corner of Brittany in a 10 000 seater stadium against not even championship level sides. that's what he calls ambition

6.) 06 Aug 2015 12:25:06
Looking at the teams we can play there is a chance we may not make the group stages. , what happens then ?

7.) 06 Aug 2015 12:50:10
We play in the Europa league.

Teams who won their respective leagues have a different qualifying side of the draw to us, we are up against teams that finished lower in the leagues but qualify due to the country getting the extra place. None of the 5 teams will want to draw Manchester United. I would think club Brugge or rapid Vienna would be our best options with Moscow being the worst.

8.) 06 Aug 2015 13:00:57
Bring it on, whoever we get. 😉

9.) 06 Aug 2015 13:59:35
In order to be champions you must beat champions. Bring on anyone!

I expect pep will be telling his board that he needs to spend at least 300m in the next transfer window if they want him to be able to make a serious challenge in the fa cup next year. 😄😂.

18 Feb 2018 12:50:24
Getting away from VAR last nights draw has resulted in the strong probability of Tottenham getting to the semi finals and thus playing the game on their home pitch. Surely that needs to be looked at. If spurs play for example ourselves or city should not the game be moved to say villa park and if they play a southern club the game could be moved to the Emirates.
You can't move the final from Wembley and should spurs reach the final then they deserve to be there.
I have never been a fan of playing semi finals at Wembley as I grew up in an era when just getting to the final and playing at Wembley was part of the dresm. To be able to play the semi final and maybe the final on your home ground somehow doesn't seem right.

1.) 18 Feb 2018 14:22:28
So if Russia get to the World Cup final it should be played in the Ukraine because it wouldn’t be fair?

2.) 18 Feb 2018 14:23:20
Just one of them things I suppose, it’s not like they will have the ground full of their fans, it will be split 50-50 like any other game so won’t really be the same as a Home game for them. I guess it does give them a slight advantage but about time the best Manager in the world won something anyway 😉.

3.) 18 Feb 2018 14:23:26
Millennium stadium should be.

4.) 18 Feb 2018 18:01:17
I far preferred it when Wembley was just for the final.

5.) 18 Feb 2018 19:37:47
You sound very worried about spurs Allan, can you imagine we play you in the semi-finals and give you a runaround like we did a few weeks ago wouldn't be fair due to Wembley. I fully agree that all semi-finals should be played at neutral grounds like the good old days and it also takes the shine off getting to Wembley for the final, if we meet Utd in the semi-finals we could play it at Rochdale's spotland ground ahhh forget that after todays shambles of a performance.

Ok much has been said about sanchez being given the iconic number 7 shirt as worn by best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham and ronaldo well the simple question is who is the best player to have worn that shirt?
For me although my heart says Best my head says Ronaldo. I still remember his debut against Bolton as a sub when in the space of 20 mins a 1 0 deficit became a 4 1 win. The goose stepping step overs and the dribbling ability left the crowd spellbound and we all new then that we were watching someone who would become something special.

1.) 23 Jan 2018 12:42:11
For United best.
Ronaldo moved up a level at Madrid.

{Ed007's Note - No Michael Owen?}

2.) 23 Jan 2018 12:44:48
Its hard to pick the best of them. All different players in different eras who left their mark.
Best was the first footballing superstar who cane to a club still rebuilding after Munich and helped to win that first European cup.
Robson carried us through an era when we were just a cup side but he drive us on as a captain should.
Eric was the catalyst for that first title in 26, the catalyst for the Fergie era league domination and inspired the class of 96.
Beckham was Mr showbiz. Scored some great goals.
Ronaldo was Ronaldo. As you say we witnessed something special.

Its hard to pick the best. In terms of talent and skill its between Best and Ronaldo. In terms if impact on the team it's Eric.

3.) 23 Jan 2018 12:47:31
MD7 all the way.

4.) 23 Jan 2018 13:38:42
Robson, no debate for me. He would be worth £200M nowadays.

5.) 23 Jan 2018 13:51:41
The best? Well clues probably in the name my favourite however was becks.

6.) 23 Jan 2018 14:02:38
Torn between Di Maria and Depay. Both were absolute club legends: gave everything for the shirt, and have so many stand out moments.

7.) 23 Jan 2018 14:03:23
Georgie the Belfast Boy. No question whatsoever.

8.) 23 Jan 2018 14:08:26
Cantona for me. Was my hero growing up! Would be best in terms of skill set but King Eric was one of the main reasons I supported United.

9.) 23 Jan 2018 14:12:43

10.) 23 Jan 2018 14:12:44
I'm told by many that know that George was the best but I am too young to have appreciated him.

Between the others it is such a tough choice but I would probably say Cantona for the impact he had for us.

Robson was amazing, a real captain, Ronaldo has become the best player in the world and one of the top 5 to ever play the game and Beckham's workrate and time he took to become to player he became was immense despite probably being the least talented of the 5.

What it definitely tells us is that the last few number 7s haven't deserved the shirt and finally we have a player that might be a catalyst for something special.

11.) 23 Jan 2018 14:37:42
Can you imagine Georgie on today's pitches and the extra protection from the referees?

12.) 23 Jan 2018 14:38:13
Lolll juST realised who MD7 was.

13.) 23 Jan 2018 16:08:20
The best number 7 in my time of being a fan, for me is Bryan Robson. An absolutely brilliant captain and player and exactly what we’re missing now.

14.) 23 Jan 2018 16:28:00
Noucamp he'd be the first billionaire footballer. Although if he was around now in his prime he'd be working his way thru the cast of Hollyoaks, Little Mix and the revived Miss World.

15.) 23 Jan 2018 16:42:06
Lol mort he sure would. Imagine the headlines if georgie was kicking about now. I missed his time gds but from what every fan told me who was lucky enough to witness him and the many 7s that came after, George was something exceptional.

16.) 23 Jan 2018 19:06:22
There way tie between Best, Robson and Cantona. Ronaldo played his best after he left us unfortunately, and although I have a lot of affection for Becks he just wasn't as talented or influential as the others.

Best was simply a genius like which the world had never seen before, Robson was everything you wanted from a captain and Cantona was the most influential.

17.) 23 Jan 2018 20:20:40
Robson was a bit special .
He was United, we looked lost with out him .
Same for England as well.
85/ 86 I think United would of went close to winning the league and England the world cup with a fit Robson.

18.) 23 Jan 2018 20:25:17
I saw Best live in the flesh once, I remember the awe I had when he walked on the pitch, back then you could only watch the clips on tv and yet could see the genius. As an all round man with the genius it would always be best. However on pure football talent it is Ronaldo for me. I was at the Bolton game and that day something very special started. It isn’t just the two footed ability, the power to run, to dribble to score and to finish. What put him above was his unbelievable heading ability, to head like a centre forward. The day he played against Bolton I had never seen the like before and that included all the other greats.

19.) 23 Jan 2018 20:36:27

20.) 23 Jan 2018 22:42:32
When we look at consistency Becks wasn’t half bad either.

21.) 23 Jan 2018 23:43:42
Totally agree jred on 86 wc and put a fit robson in the 90 wc team and he would have been the difference.

22.) 24 Jan 2018 00:05:57
Best played in an era when the pitches were often little better than mud baths. He played in an era where the football was very much heavier, especially in the wet, and tackles which today are given red cards were considered as par for the course then. He would have been even greater in today's game. Left foot right foot headers dribbling defending and blessed with a fine football brain as well as instinctive genius he had it all. O top it off he wasn't too bad looking either.

23.) 24 Jan 2018 07:52:14
Best was before my time but growing up Robson was my hero. That then changed to Roy Keane, so for me it has to be Robbo.

22 Jan 2018 21:53:59
Must have a good read of the liver page tomorrow lol.

16 Jan 2018 11:49:29
I may be in a minority but I really wouldn't be broken hearted if we don't end up with sanchez.
We paid a fortune to get van persie and how many years was he effective for us.2?. We paid even more to get di maria who clearly didn't want to come to us. We are now proposing making someone who turns 30 next birthday and who would prefer to go to city the best paid player in the premiership. I have no doubt that sanchez would give us 2/ 3 great years but I would rather us be identifying players that will give us 5/ 6 great years. I would prefer that we throw money at people like dybala, milinkovic savic, fabinho, dendonka? And if Martin is supposed to be a great prospect why aren't we being linked with him?
It's just my opinion but I feel we should be looking medium/ long term and not just for a short term fix.
Just to stir the pot a bit more if the choice is sanchez now at the sort of figures being quoted or Ozil on a free in the summer which would people prefer?

1.) 16 Jan 2018 12:09:04
I think its the oposite, that he really wanted to come to Old Trafford, that's why he is not a City player yet. Even when he went to Barca, it was rumoured that United was one of his boyhood dreams, but it was never a option before now in this window.
So i think if he comes, its his first choice.

2.) 16 Jan 2018 12:15:44
It wouldn't be the end of the world .
If we don't sign Sanchez life goes on and we will sign someone else .

3.) 16 Jan 2018 12:26:53
Allan rvp won us the league I consider that a successfull move for us. Also what makes you think dybala would want to come here, also ed002 said fabinho would prefer city and there is no actual fact in Sanchez only wanting city, he could stay at Arsenal for 6 months and sign for city come summer but he seems happy enough to come to us now itself. Do Maria was a bad signing because lvg wanted nothing to do with him unlike mourinho clearly wants Sanchez.

4.) 16 Jan 2018 13:07:15
Both ozil and sanchez for me, get rid of mkhitaryan, mata and zlatan. Same age range apart from zlatan and they are definitely upgrades and should not hurt the wage budget too heavily.

Let's remember also that if rojo is good enough to play left back for Argentina in a world cup final then he ie certainly good enough to play left back for us.

NO NO NO! If Madrid want rid we should steer well clear unless the fee is significantly less than the 80m they are likely to demand.

Have never wanted bale and bearing in mind that he is having a bad season at AM I am not convinced that griezmann is worth the money he would cost. Since the board may be unwilling to sanction another huge signing 30 million on ozil might not be the worst shout especially as he has worked with Jose before. I would also agree that sorting out our full back options should be the main priority.

If micki has a good season why spend a fortune on griezmann. Would rather spend the money on a quality wide player ( not bale) and also look at improving our full back options.

As athletico will almost certainly still be in the CL why would he move in January as he wouldn't be able to play for us even if we are still in it. Next summer makes more sense.

{Ed004's Note - But it would be a massive boost if we are going for the league. It's highly unlikely that we will be competing for champions league this year and can't see Atletico mounting a challenge either}

What if for example a goal is scored and there is a clear handball in the build up? How long will it be before the debate moves on to var examining all aspects of the build up to the goal just as they sometimes do in Rugby when a try is often disallowed because of something that happened maybe 30 secs before the ball was touched down.

Have said for years that when a player ' takes one for the team ' he should be sin binned for 10 mins. Getting booked is meaningless and not a way to punish a deliberate foul.

Redknapp is a failed manager whom I would trust to arrange a p. s up in a brewery . Always likes to have his name in the papers and this is just a desperate attempt to try and stay relavent.

Watched a 10 min YouTube clip of milinkovic which I appreciate is only a highlights package but I couldn't help but be impressed. Two footed skilful he immediately reminded me of de bruyne in the way he ran with the ball. Yes he would cost a lot but at 22 he is the sort of player that we should be in the mix for.

Actually shappy I agree with you 100%. One of rashford martial or lingard would likely have to make way for sanchez and I don't see why any of them should. We desperately need a wide right player and moura would fit the bill perfectly imo.
You are now in a minority of 2!

{Ed004's Note - But Sanchez played the majority of the start of his career on the Right? He either played on the right or centrally with Udinese and he played on the right for Barcelona as Messi was deployed in the false 9 position. Additionally he played through the middle a lot last season for Arsenal}
