Could someone explain to me why, despite being seeded, we face potentially tricky CL opposition including a couple of real banana skins in monaco and lazio whereas celtic who aren't seeded will be facing 1 of 5 real minnows. Am i missing something?

1.) 06 Aug 2015 10:57:38
Seeding is based on the European co-efficient worked out by how well the team has done in previous years. Monaco are a relatively new team to the CL so they haven't got a good rating in the comp and Lazio haven't been in it for years so their rating has dropped.

2.) 06 Aug 2015 11:15:47
There is a different route for Champions of lesser nations thatln there is for the 4th place teams from bigger nations. I believe it's well explained on United's site and a few other places on the web.

3.) 06 Aug 2015 11:42:27
i think a match against fenerbahce would be nice.

4.) 06 Aug 2015 12:08:38
I wondered this last night as well but from what I can see is the last qualifying stage is divided by 'Champion Seeds' and 'League Seeds'

Hence Celtic being Scottish champions they are seeded differently.

Wes369 - Fenerbahce were knocked out last night

5.) 06 Aug 2015 12:16:07
Monaco would be very tricky as they are playing very well in pre season and have talented players. The only club in the French league who could get anywhere near PSG.
On a lighter note DIMARIA saying how happy he is to play for PSG. Wont be happy when playing in some cold corner of Brittany in a 10 000 seater stadium against not even championship level sides. that's what he calls ambition

6.) 06 Aug 2015 12:25:06
Looking at the teams we can play there is a chance we may not make the group stages. , what happens then ?

7.) 06 Aug 2015 12:50:10
We play in the Europa league.

Teams who won their respective leagues have a different qualifying side of the draw to us, we are up against teams that finished lower in the leagues but qualify due to the country getting the extra place. None of the 5 teams will want to draw Manchester United. I would think club Brugge or rapid Vienna would be our best options with Moscow being the worst.

8.) 06 Aug 2015 13:00:57
Bring it on, whoever we get. 😉

9.) 06 Aug 2015 13:59:35
In order to be champions you must beat champions. Bring on anyone!

Those of you who read my long post yesterday will remember that I had 3 wishes
A united win
For my home town not to be humiliated
A Burton goal.
Well I got all 3 so am a happy man tonight!

19 Sep 2017 12:25:37
With tomorrow night in mind i thought I would do an article about our opponents as I spent the first 40 years of my life living in Burton and have divided loyalties as such.
I have watched Burton in the 60s 70s 80s and 90s before I developed Ms which has now left me paralysed from the waist down. In days long forgotten any gate over 1000 was exceptional and the big games used to be against Tamworth and Gresley rovers. At half time you would either grab a pint of beer, a chip butty or pay a visit to the uncovered urinal depending which was the greater need!
It seems that Ben Robinson has been chairman for ever but he did briefly hand over the reigns to someone i knew well namely jock Gordon. Jock hailed from Glasgow and ran a local transport cafe where for a modest cost you could be fed with a mountain of bacon beans chips eggs and sausages together with a diet Pepsi lol. The downside was that you had to get used to being called an effing English ba. Rd. at all times. That said I worked for a bank close to his cafe and used to phone him up to order various baps butties and cobs for him to deliver which he would always do bless him. To say he was a character is an understatement. At a new years Eve party he was standing on a table singing and dancing and his top set of teeth fell out and landed in someone else's beer. something I can't imagine David Gill doing.
I would guess buttons most notable former player would be Ian Hutchinson who went on to play along side Peter osgood for Chelsea and scoring a late equaliser against Leeds in the 1970 fa cup final. What he was most famous for was the length of his throw ins one of which led to chelseas winner in the cup final reply.
Burton has had some well known managers. You will all know about nigel clough son of Brian and of course his predecessor was Jimmy Floyd hass before his fall from grace. Other previous managers include gary rowett, Roy mcfarland and Ian storey Moore who did of course play for ourselves. Lastly how many of you realised that Burton was the first managerial job for neil warnock 1981 to 1986.
My hope for tomorrow is for a united win but for Burton not to be humiliated. My biggest hope would be for Burton to score so that I can then say that the team i once saw lose 1 0 at home to merthyr Tydfil but that now plays in a division consisting of 2 European cup winners, 3 former division 1 winners and 1 former premiership winner can truly said to be in the big time!

1.) 19 Sep 2017 15:22:05
Thanks for sharing this Allan, what a story they are living through right now.

2.) 19 Sep 2017 16:35:42
Great post Allan.

3.) 19 Sep 2017 20:19:04

That brought a lot of memories back as I also was born and bred in that area from the 50's onwards and remember with joy the games between Burton and Gresley Rovers.

Great post.

4.) 19 Sep 2017 22:27:16
Great story mate.

Roll on the end of the transfer window and the end of the Daily Bale!

27 Jul 2017 11:23:58
Meant to ask this before the Madrid game but with ibrahimovic unavailable and Rooney transferred who should be our 1st choice penalty taker? Personally I would say pogba or herrera.

1.) 27 Jul 2017 11:37:05
Mata probably, but it should be whoever proves themselves the best penalty taker in training.

2.) 27 Jul 2017 11:42:46
Lukaku will take them followed by Pogba / Mata.

A question to which I don't know the answer. If we won the europa league and finished 4th in the prem, who else would qualify for the CL? the europa league runners up or the team that finished 5th in the prem.

{Ed001's Note - 5th.}

1.) 19 Mar 2017 13:53:25
I don't think either gets the place, iirc additional spots are allowed only if either cl annd el winners have not finished in qualifying places for cl. If we finish 4th and win el England will not get additional spot unless leicester win too and as far as i now that spot is not passed on to runners up either,

2.) 19 Mar 2017 13:58:50
We could end up doing Liverpool a favour there Ed01. Do you fancy your boys at City, with them having played midweek?

{Ed001's Note - I never give predictions as it is bad luck sorry. That is why I don't do them on the match previews even.}

3.) 19 Mar 2017 14:19:30
Fairly sure csm is correct unless there has been a recent rule change.

4.) 19 Mar 2017 14:26:05
Oh yeah I forgot you are the superstitious type. As long as you haven't washed the lucky shirt you should be fine!

5.) 19 Mar 2017 14:26:05
Oh yeah I forgot you are the superstitious type. As long as you haven't washed the lucky shirt you should be fine!

{Ed001's Note - the important thing seems to be whether or not me mam has a gin and tonic during the game or not. Luckily she doesn't seem to need an excuse....}

6.) 19 Mar 2017 16:48:13
we win eL and finish 4th, 5th place team from Pl gets in.

7.) 19 Mar 2017 17:35:09

I have just read the rules properly and you are wrong. 5th place in the league will not get in the CL unless they win the CL or EL, under no other circumstances can 5th get into the CL.

Have never wanted bale and bearing in mind that he is having a bad season at AM I am not convinced that griezmann is worth the money he would cost. Since the board may be unwilling to sanction another huge signing 30 million on ozil might not be the worst shout especially as he has worked with Jose before. I would also agree that sorting out our full back options should be the main priority.

If micki has a good season why spend a fortune on griezmann. Would rather spend the money on a quality wide player ( not bale) and also look at improving our full back options.

As athletico will almost certainly still be in the CL why would he move in January as he wouldn't be able to play for us even if we are still in it. Next summer makes more sense.

{Ed004's Note - But it would be a massive boost if we are going for the league. It's highly unlikely that we will be competing for champions league this year and can't see Atletico mounting a challenge either}

Hopefully on Feb 1 next year we will still be challenging for 4 trophies. Jose likes his big powerful strikers and lukako can't play every game. Having ibra around gives us 2 powerful strikers and 2 speedy ones so we have good options.
As long as the deal is sensible wages wise it's a yes let's keep him from me.

And bales agent has always said that his client is going nowhere. Wd bale improve our team. probably. but not at a cost of 90m.
Despite being 32 cr7 is valued 40m more than when we sold him in his prime. Bale despite being only 28 is valued the same as he was 4 years ago, this in an era when transfer fees are rocketing. Why has bales value not risen? 3 reasons imo. injury record, the loss of that extreme pace that made him so devastating previously and the fact that RM would happily cash in on him if he could be persuaded to leave so that they could buy mbappe.
Good player yes but not worth 90m or so with his injury record.
Would prefer isco all day long as I suspect RM will when la liga kicks off.

Can't help wondering why we don't ever have martial and rashford on the pitch at the same time, one wide left the other wide right. Got to be worth a try out especially at home.

A point at Liverpool is a good point but only if you actually try and win first. City would have been happy with a point at Chelsea but kept trying for all 3 and ended up getting them.

So city win and tbh it was a 0 -1 massacre. Mind you if they play at such a high tempo every game they might be knackered by Xmas.

Loath as I am to defend the beast I do wish that we looked slightly more watertight at the back. We gave away 2 bad goals against stoke and I can't imagine a Kane or an Aguero letting us off the way Rooney did yesterday. Also I was alarmed at how much space was available for Everton on our left side especially in the first half.
That said it was another efficient performance by us and with Southampton and palace to follow hopefully another 6 points should be forthcoming.

Great post as always shappy was going to post something similar though not in so much detail. I also think Chelsea and spurs will join the Manchester clubs in the top 4. Am sure arsenal will pick up but like Liverpool I feel that they will always concede goals which will result in dropping too many points.
