On the Real Madrid pages its said that Madrid may be looking to let Asensio go in the Summer. Is he a player that United have looked at and will look to sign?

In the last sharkpood Ed002 said MU were interested as an option for LW if I remember correctly.

I don't know if its still the case after signing Sanchez and Mou repeatedly saying he won't sign an attacking players even though you can't believe everything keeps saying.

Its bale who we are after as a winger. I assume the interest has gone for Asensio.

Whilst its the international break, has anyone had the chance to read the extracts of Michael Carrick's book being serialised in the Times?

Putting aside that any profits from the book will go to the Michael Carrick Foundation (which is fantastic) it's hard to read about how low he was after Rome 2009. Here is a guy who has done fantastically well for the club but has suffered after blaming himself for the loss. He should, and rightly so IMO, go down as one of the greatest midfielders we've ever had. Every time you see him interviewed he comes across as intelligent, compassionate and genuine. I hope he is involved with our Club for a very long time. The only player who comes close at the moment in terms of how they carry themselves is Juan Mata. Just wish we could tell Carrick that Rome wasn't his fault - we came up against one the very best teams of all time, and he'll always be a United Legend.

Good post, Becks. Respect for Carrick has been late in coming, but nowadays it seems he is far more appreciated than he was in his prime.

He's underated :D.

Across various news outlets it has been reported that both Man Utd and Man City are to look at Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona given he has a release clause of 60m Euro.

I just wondered if any of the Eds know whether he is someone being looked at? Sure I've seen on here in the past to ignore release clauses as they don't apply or are misunderstood.

Eds rumours from Spain saying that Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid this summer and he has told Perez this.

Is this his usual negotiating for a new contract, an effect of the tax investigation or does he want to leave Madrid? With Jose mentioning a surprise, could this mean the return of Ronaldo?

Thanks.

I really don't get the critisism of Mata at the moment. I get that he's not the quickest but neither was Beckham, Figo, Zidane, Scholes and plenty of other great players. I'm not saying Mata is as good as any of these, but he's a good technically player with lots of intelligence. He was key in the good run last season against Spurs, Liverpool etc. in the position he's being played in now and appears popular with the other players.

1.) 20 Aug 2015 13:20:43
the difference being all those players you listed played in their natural positions ! i don't think people are 'hating' his ability as a player, just his ability as a winger in this formation

2.) 20 Aug 2015 13:27:06
No doubt that he is a very intelligent player. But in the PL the intelligence alone doesn't help. you need that energy and the pace to make it.
You play Mata in a La Liga and i am sure he would excel and be the best at what he does. But at United, he just doesn't cut it. He is all quality, true. But i believe there is a certain 20 year old Belgian that would be better. Nothing against Mata but this isn't the time for romanticism. Mata is a luxury.

You seen how many times he slows the counter attacks. He always cuts inside and makes the safe pass. And he is just way too intelligent for the teams own good when defending. He just doesn't seem to know when to just hoof it outfield.

I would play Januzaj, Young, Valencia before Mata on that wing.

Sorry but i just don't like the sound of MAta in the team sheet when playing against big defenders as they will just run right through him.

3.) 20 Aug 2015 13:29:22
It's not only that he is slow, he is also small, which is tough in the EPL, a more physical league. Very technical, quick mind, as you have said, but he does get pressed hard by the opposition when he receives the ball back to goal on the wing.

4.) 20 Aug 2015 14:10:23
I think Mata is fantastic and I would have him every week in the starting 11. For 2 seasons he was Chelsea's best player. I don't buy into this whole lack of willingness to defend which is why Jose got rid. I have seen him work very hard for the team, tracking back and being a body there. Yes at times he has left his runner but so do a lot of players in that position at times. There is also a lot of criticism on how we play and that we don't take risks going forward but Mata has played 2 passes this season which were world class. Assist for Januzaj and his through ball to Depay who just put the ball wide. I think the team is being built for the 3 behind the striker to have a lot of freedom and rotate between the 3 of them, which is what happened when he assisted Januzaj.

5.) 20 Aug 2015 14:36:45
I don't get the mata hating. he wasn't too small for epl when he was killing it for chelsea. i think playing together with depay and adnan is the best for mata (and united). if he has quick (and intelligent) runners ahead of him, he will flourish.

6.) 20 Aug 2015 15:00:00
We cannot have different measuring sticks for different players. let's not get into Mata being the player of the year for Chelsea. We can then say that for Rooney as well. What he has done in the past and so on.

but let's not get there.

Mata has been here what 18 months. hasn't exactly set the world alight. has he?
I would be very very happy if he could do what he was doing at chelsea. But as of now, i am not convinced.

7.) 20 Aug 2015 16:19:34
shan, like i said, if he has quick and intelligent runners ahead of him, he will flourish - like he did at chelsea. In the last 18 months, how many of these quick and intelligent runners did he have around him at united.

8.) 20 Aug 2015 17:43:14
Who did he have at Chelsea may I ask?

Agreed Gazza. He has all the attributes to be the first choice CB for the next 10 years. The only negative is his agent being Raiola.

I think Rabiot would be a great signing - even if secured on a free transfer to come in at the end of the season. Would work very well with Pogba/ Matic/ Herrera and being French probably would get on well with Pogba and Martial.

For me it's about balance. Historically the Saudi regime has been guilty of some awful things including its Human Rights record, it's treatment of women, and the LGBT community etc. Though that said the state is trying to engineer change.

If it was a German multi billion pound regime looking to own the club would there be dissent because of the actions of person Germany or the regimes before? Chinese ownership of clubs has come into football and yet the Chinese regimes have seen a greater death toll than person Germany or Lenin's USSR. But their record on human rights etc. is less questioned.

I'm not saying that Saudi ownership is the correct way forward for the club, more that the Saudi regime should be allowed to progress and demonstrate it's intent to change rather than be pilloried indefinitely.

I think all fans and supporters of the club want what is best - and at the moment regardless of whose billions are funding the club, it is a structural overhaul and serious longer term planning that is needed.

Not too sure how true it is, but I believe he has a relatively low release clause of around £20-25 million.

Without getting into release clauses etc. If he were available for a fee of this amount he may be worth a punt.

I don't think the team needs good additions, I think it's missing a couple of great/ world class additions. A lot of the squad (including those likely to leave) are good, but to overhaul a very good City team and compete in the later stages in Europe a higher calibre of player is needed.

I think that Ole should be sat with Woodward and DOF/ sporting director/ technical director at the end of the season saying this is my vision for United whilst I'm at the helm, and these are the type of players I need to implement it and the positions I need strengthening.

Woodward and the DOF etc. should then be tasked with getting these players starting with first choice then on to other players if these are unattainable.

Whether the club gets Champions League or not, Manchester United will carry a certain allure - certainly for players from the British Isles, in the same way Madrid and Barcelona do for European teams.

Interesting thoughts DLIB, but with the players let go I'd be concerned around how thin the squad would be and the lack of experience.

Id happily sell Pogba if Madrid are willing to pay £120-150m which in turn should be enough to but Saul and Wan Bissaka. Personally of those your happy to see leave I'd keep Mata and Herrera. Both are experienced, have a genuine affection for the club, and give their all.

I agree on Sanchez. And I'd also be willing to sell Lukaku to Italy. Sancho would be a great signing but I'd prefer Ndombele or Kante than Rice if possible. I also think a word class CB is needed whether that be Koulibaly, Varane or another.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree re the concentration. He also appears to have risen to the challenge of playing at a big club with big history. I think the partnership with Gomez looks good for the future - tbf the back 4 and keeper barring injuries looks to be pretty settled for a good few years.

{Ed001's Note - I certainly hope so mate.}

Ed001 I appreciate being a Liverpool fan it may be a difficult question to answer but what is your opinion on Van Dijk?

Personally I wasn't all that worried from what I saw at Southampton and Celtic, but he has improved the Liverpool defence no end. A lot of people are saying he's the best in the world - would you place him in that category?

Becksrightboot

{Ed001's Note - I would say as out and out defending no, he is not the best. However, as an overall package in the modern game, his pace, power, aerial prowess and quality on the ball puts him right up there as, at least, one of the best. The problem he had with Saints and Celtic was his tendency to stroll and lose concentration in matches. That has been absent this season and Liverpool have benefitted greatly, especially when he is next to Gomez. Having to talk the youngster through has kept him alert and at his best.}

The France Football list of top 50 managers had some rather odd places for managers. Klopp higher than Wenger was a strange one. I think 1,2 and 3 should have been Ferguson, Paisely and Cruyff - though some might dispute in what order. Del Bosque down in 33 was crazy also.

Ed001 - How good was Arrigo Sachhi? The French list puts him in 3rd place ahead of the other Italian managers. I understand his Milan side of the late 80's early 90's was very good but I wasn't aware he was so highly thought of.

Becksrightboot

{Ed001's Note - he was good, but it is hard to see how he could be ahead of so many others. He did well, but not to the extent the 3 you mentioned did. It just seems a bizarre list with little real sense or thought behind it. Maybe that is the point, just to get people talking rather than to actually reflect any kind of intelligent thought?}
