Any Eds shed any light on Mount and Chilwell missing the game through isolating, I presume the whole Scotland team are isolating as well?

So Sly are saying that Soumare is close to joining Leicester. I read on here we might be interested in him?

Cantonas seagull friend

1.) 26 May 2021 16:30:14
Leicester are better than us at completing deals. They buy well and appear to have a good overall setup.

2.) 26 May 2021 17:39:09
Deal was agreed a couple of months ago apparently.

3.) 26 May 2021 18:56:54
Interesting to see if he is an addition to the current squad or if there will be players leaving or if they are just planning for the future. He seems like a HM so might suggest that Ndidi is an option if a club is willing to pay a good price.

4.) 26 May 2021 19:21:07
Fabrizio Romano says done deal. He’s rarely wrong.

5.) 26 May 2021 19:56:21
Brad, at Lille Benjamin André often plays as the holding/ defensive midfielder, with Soumare tending to play in a more box to box role. He tends to lean more toward a defensive box to box player.

6.) 27 May 2021 12:54:31
Shappy, maybe they are looking at him as potential replacement for Tielmans then who is getting interest from a number of clubs including Liverpool.

7.) 27 May 2021 15:36:14
Brad, that would make more sense.

15 Sep 2020 18:28:11
I have read that spurs are close to a deal for Reguilon, maybe we did not want him?

Cantonas seagull friend

1.) 15 Sep 2020 19:07:01
theres talk of a madrid wanting a buyback clause there's no way we should even entertain that idea so for me i'm glad we walked away.
We definitely need a left back tho so hopefully we get telles tbh i would rather have him anyway.

2.) 15 Sep 2020 21:27:56
What is wrong with the buy back clause, just get big Phil Jones to change his name to Reguilon and off he goes to Madrid in a few years time.

09 Sep 2020 10:31:03
Romero up for sale, Chelsea may be interested. Rumours keep on going.

Cantonas seagull friend

1.) 09 Sep 2020 11:08:48
Romero deserves to be a number 1. If he signed for Chelsea I'd wish him the best of luck. Anyone buying him woild get a very good keeper.

2.) 09 Sep 2020 14:27:36
He's been a class act whenever he has played for us. 39 clean sheets in 61 appearances is exceptional. Wherever he goes he deserves to be first choice and play every week.

3.) 09 Sep 2020 15:17:54
Wish him well. He would walk into 10 teams at least in the PL. Always done his best for us.

4.) 09 Sep 2020 17:13:44
It can’t be easy being a number 2 goalkeeper given the need to be ready at a moments notice. It must be difficult to step onto the pitch and do what needs to be done having sometimes not played for months at a time. Like others, I wish him all the best wherever he goes.

I am a little worried about who we will get to replace him as he’s arguably amongst the very best when it comes to backup keepers. We should be fine next season with Dave and Dean, but I’d be surprised if they’re both still at the club come the close of next summer’s transfer window.

07 Aug 2020 20:01:41
I thought we were interested in TORRES, is this the same one as City have signed? I am seeing the name Pau Torres.

Cantonas seagull friend

1.) 07 Aug 2020 21:20:35
City signed the winger torres. Pau is a cb.

2.) 08 Aug 2020 20:21:51
So did we want both?

3.) 08 Aug 2020 22:42:35
Neither i'd say.

We are fielding one hell of a strong team today and also Matic.

1.) 11 Sep 2021 14:45:39
You wait and wait and wait with all the anticipation and excitement and then Fred doesn't start. Hugely disappointed ???.

2.) 11 Sep 2021 17:00:02
Matic played well. He is suited to this type of game, with pogba along side him. I'm hoping McTom can make that his position this year, I just don't see DvdB and Pogba in CM in prem.

3.) 11 Sep 2021 17:35:51
Ole is that you?

4.) 11 Sep 2021 18:15:55
Same dodgy, VDB certainly isn’t a DM so would have to play instead of pogba not with him.

5.) 11 Sep 2021 19:17:39
Donny literally came out and sad he can play any midfield positions. He's ajax schooled. He can play anywhere. He does not lack work rate. If you give him a 5 game run, Fred isn't coming back and taking his place. And to me he would suit the European game much more than PL.
I would honestly start him the European game as I don't see matic starting again.

6.) 11 Sep 2021 23:27:23
Unfortunately Ole thinks differently.

May sound like a stupid question, but do United get their replica shirts from Adidias cheaper than any online or sports store?

Cantonas seagull friend

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea.}

1.) 07 Sep 2021 13:43:15
Also to anyone, what is the difference between a normal shirt and an authentic shirt apart from about £30.

{Ed001's Note - the material they are made from. There is very little real difference though in real world usage.}

2.) 07 Sep 2021 14:14:19
It's mad Ed001, people pay the extra?

{Ed001's Note - apparently so. Then they can get the same shirt as their heroes I suppose, rather than a replica that is little better than a fake off the market.}

3.) 07 Sep 2021 17:06:44
I've not bought a replica shirt in 17 years this year. Even that was probably 2-3 years longer than I should have been buying them😂

Surely pretending to be a United player is something you should leave in back in your childhood?

Fancy dress as an adult should be confined to the bedroom 🤣.

4.) 07 Sep 2021 17:28:08
My wife has warned me not to buy anymore replica shirts/ jerseys. I have at least one for each year since 1st AIG top (06/ 07 season) . Only time I deviated was last season when I went for a normal red 'polo' shirt. This year I got the blue.
My favourite among all these must be the 2015/ 16 black 3rd kit with bright stripes.

5.) 07 Sep 2021 17:59:24
Don’t think people wear them to pretend to be a united player Shappy, just to support the team. Don’t think I have bought one in my life but I get them as presents every year so think I’ve always had the red shirt, really like this year’s so looking forward to my birthday 😀.

6.) 07 Sep 2021 18:56:40
I only buy the 60's and 70's replicas as they look so much better.

7.) 07 Sep 2021 20:28:37
Spoken like a true accountant gds2🤣🤣.

8.) 07 Sep 2021 23:08:20
The young lad's raging. He loves the top, but won't let me buy it for him. Still doing his anti-Glazer thing since the super league fiasco. Kids 😁.

9.) 07 Sep 2021 23:29:12
In the nineties they used to put the actual used players shirts on sale in the club shop. At the time the quality was better, particularly the numbers on the back. You could never get the great famous players like Cantona or Beckham, but the Neville shirts were there for example. I doubt they would do that these days.

10.) 08 Sep 2021 00:49:51
You don’t get rich by paying for things Ken!

11.) 08 Sep 2021 21:26:27
One will come out of the washing machine like a clean, fresh version of itself. The other will be faded into oblivion and half the size.

03 Sep 2021 17:00:51
It's a pity that Messi did not team up with Pep, would have been great for the league and English football and may have encouraged others that Real and Barcelona are not what they used to be. I have looked at both their teams and there is not many world class players left in both squads. That may change if Real get Mpbabbe and Haaland next summer.

On a different point Eds, has there ever been a thought to having a mini tournament involving the top 10 leagues? You choose your team from all players available in your country's leagues.

Cantonas seagull friend

{Ed001's Note - I don't know what you mean, what kind of tournament?}

1.) 04 Sep 2021 09:12:39
When you are paying a player £250,000+ a week, I think a club would be reluctant to let them go and play in a tournament like that, if it was up to clubs they wouldn’t have internationals games I suspect!

Ronaldo hasn’t been in Spain for a couple years now, Messi has left Barca, Ramos has left Madrid, I think players are already thinking the Spanish league isn’t what it used to be. But on this, I think Atletico Madrid will be the team to watch in Spain for the foreseeable future.

2.) 04 Sep 2021 10:17:30
I think CSF is referring to a tournament similar to the recent MLS all star 11 Vs Liga MX all star 11 match.

But with all of the domestic European leagues facing off against eachother with an all star 11 from each league.

Ultimately I can't see why the powerful European clubs would want to release their players to play extra games for which they don't receive any financial gain.

{Ed002's Note - Those sorts of games have happened very occasionally over the years. England have played a few times against a Rest of the World XI and there have been the Soccer Aid games.}

3.) 04 Sep 2021 13:39:46
When I was a lad a new kid moved into the street. He was incredible at football and played for a premier league youth team. He wasn't allowed to play footy down the park with the rest of us muggles in case someone broke his ankle. I imagine this is a similar kind of thing. Does Ole really want to hear that Ronaldo is out for the season after being hacked down by Ollie Murs in a charity game?

4.) 04 Sep 2021 15:57:44
Spenno, when I lived on London I used to know a few of the Crystal Palace lads, a certain Welsh international used to get involved in a few of the five a side games I used to play in. While a future United player used to turn up and watch but never played any games, would have a kick about with us before or afterwards though.

Professional footballers on the main have clauses in their contacts that stop them from certain sports or playing in anything that isn't sanctioned by the club. However, most bend/ break these rules from time to time.

5.) 04 Sep 2021 18:04:37
Didnt Sunderland ban Stefan Schwarz from travelling to space on one of those commercial flights with Virgin?

{Ed014's Note - there are some seriously red tinted specs that get Varane over Dias or VVD.

10.) 04 Sep 2021 10:47:57
Ed so many people are seriously underrating Varane, and I thought this before he came to United, so has little to do with allegiance. I don't think people have seen enough of him to realise just how good he is.

11.) 04 Sep 2021 11:04:35
Varane has been playing the highest level for over a decade.
Multiple champions league winner and World cup winner and still only 28.

12.) 04 Sep 2021 11:04:39
LLV, I think playing his club football at Real Madrid alongside Sergio Ramos means he was never quite in the spotlight.

From the matches I watched of Real Madrid the Ramos/ Varane partnership reminded me of the Terry/ Carvalho partnership at Chelsea.

Where the louder, more aggressive, in your face defender seemed to get all the plaudits yet it was the other quieter defender who was actually the more skilled of the two.

Ramos was always known as a liability right up until he played alongside Varane, who covered for him.

I expect to see something similar at United with Maguire being praised over the next 2-3 years for excellent performances. Yet in truth he will only able to play those sort of performances because he has Varane alongside him.

The British media are always more impressed by a trier than a talent. Someone who charges around, throws themselves about, dives in where it hurts or makes last minute blocks/ tackles/ interceptions. Which in turn influences the opinion of the fans. A great defender reads the game well and stops a dangerous situation from developing rather than reacting once it has.

Varane will make a huge difference to our team. As a side note I expect to see Maguire get 5-8 goals this season now we have quality deliveries from set-plays and a designated set-piece coach. Which in turn will make people believe Maguire is a better player.

13.) 04 Sep 2021 11:10:25
One double-save from DDG with the ball straight at him both times and he's back in team of the year :D.

14.) 04 Sep 2021 11:23:48
Allison
TAA
Maguire
Varane
Shaw
Kante
Bruno
De Bruyne
Rashford
Ronaldo
Salah

To be clear, I think VVD is a much better player than Maguire, but I’d rather have a CB pairing that play together regularly (which, one assumes, RV and HM will have been doing for a full season by the time this hypothetical EPL 11 plays) .

15.) 04 Sep 2021 11:24:55
Spenno, in all fairness, the second save was outstanding, pure reflexes. The main issue though is that most other top keepers would have come out on the corner and either gathered the ball or punched it clear, and therefore would't need to make a spectacular save.

16.) 04 Sep 2021 11:10:43
I agree to an extent Shappy. But against Wolves, Maguire didn't play particularly well, yet Varane was excellent. I recall Maguire being caught out of position, the Wolves player through on goal and Varane sliding in to block the shot. Those things will not go unnoticed. And I do think Maguire should score more this season, although with Varane, he won't be the only one challenging for the ball on corners anymore.

To be fair to Ed, Dias is a great defender, easily the best in the league last season due to VVD's injury, but he's has one very good season at a top club, whereas Varane is massively decorated, and has shown consistency and the highest level over many years.

{Ed014's Note - there’s a real need to see Varane cut it in the Premiership before we consider him on a level with Dias and VVD.

He may be decorated but there’s plenty of players with plenty of medals that were in the right team at the right time as weren’t necessarily that good themselves.

17.) 04 Sep 2021 16:24:40
Dias has had one good season, not exactly a premier league legend. It's likely to happen, but for now, he needs to show he can match last season each year.

Why does a player need to prove themselves in England to be taken seriously? We see the Ronaldo vs Messi debate everywhere, under that logic it's a no brainer because Ronaldo has played in England. It's the Pele and Maradona may have been good, Maldini and Beckenbauer too, but could they have performed on a cold rainy night in Stoke logic?

{Ed014's Note - why does he have to be a legend, I’m simply talking about how good he is, when have you actually watched Varane to know how good he is?

Dias hasn’t played 2nd fiddle to anyone to be immense, nor has VVD.

Time will tell, but if he is as good as either Dias or VVD I’ll be gobsmacked!

18.) 04 Sep 2021 17:23:09
I've been following Varane since he was 18, as it's nice to see a success story involving a local lad, watching him now and then over his career. I remember his break-through season at Lens and the hype across the region, and nation, as he was seen as potentially being the player to fill the hole left by the likes of Blanc, Thuram and Desailly, and he's lived up to those expectations. It's easy to forget he was playing central defence for Real Madrid as a teen, and went there only when Zidane intervened to prevent him moving to United, there aren't too many defenders getting that kind of interest at 18.

You say he's been playing second fiddle too, but who's he played second fiddle to for France? He's the first chosen in the back pairing from an ever growing pool of frankly great defenders. He's got 80 caps at 28, getting his first at 19, which isn't bad considering only 8 players have reached the 100 appearances mark to date. He was also the youngest player to ever captain France at 21.

Although Ramos has been a great defender, how much of that is down to his partner, who is someone who just keeps his head down and plays?

{Ed014's Note - LLV he could be a hit in the Premiership but when I’ve watched him numerous times he hasn’t looked anywhere near the level of Dias and VVD.

There is little doubt they are the heartbeat of their respective defences, it’s been there for all to see whether that be here or at previous clubs.

When I see that at United, irrespective of medals, caps or age then I’ll be the first to say he’s every bit as good. Right now I’d be amazed if that was the case.

19.) 04 Sep 2021 18:40:05
LLV, if Varane signed for anyone other than United he would be Beckenbauer's secret love child and a chip off the old block.

It's just the typical ABU's.

24 hours before Ronaldo signed for United he was one of the best players on the planet and was about to guarantee City winning the league, both domestic cups, the UCL, the super cup, the world club cup and men's health monthly crossword. He was an elite player and instantly the best striker in the league.

Yet he then signs for United rather than City and suddenly he's over the hill, not a shadow of the player he used to be, only signing for the money, and clearly not as good a striker as Harry Kane.

The sad thing is it's the same pundits and journalist singing a completely different tune based purely on the player signing for United rather than a rival.

It's pathetic, but it does make me smile. The moment the media start saying things like this is a sign that they suddenly consider imus a genuine threat.

Over the last 8 years they stopped or at least heavily reduced the amount the bad mouthed us. We were washed up and they didn't feel threatened by us. After this summer they have changed their tune. There is a genuine feeling that United are starting to build something and could be back challenging at the sharp end. As such they feel the need to criticise everything we do.

Suddenly 4 time UCL winner and world cup winner Varane isn't that good and has been riding on Ramos's coattails his whole career. If he went to City, Chelsea or Liverpool he would be considered an instant up grade to their defence, and would be talked about as a player of equal stature to VvD or Dias.

Sancho also is suddenly considered a gamble and not as good as players like Harvey Barnes. One pundit even said Barnes would have been a better signing as he is EPL proven. I like Barnes and think he's a good player, yet he turns 24 before the end of the year and in reality had half a good season in the EPL before injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

While Sancho has 94 goals and assists in 125 appearances for Dortmund. How he can be considered a risk compared to Barnes is beyond me.

United on paper had the best transfer window in the EPL, especially in terms of improving the first 11.

If anyone else signed the players we did for the fees we paid the pundits and media would be creaming themselves over it. Yet when it's United suddenly these players are all risks or over the hill.

As for Arsenal fans they spent 29m on Ramsdale, while we signed a better keeper in Heaton for absolutely £0.00.

{Ed014's Note - that’s because he’s one for the future not one for the now and then. 🤦‍♂️

And stop playing the victim ffs!

20.) 04 Sep 2021 19:45:17
I don't think they have an agenda. They told you what they see.
I have also my doubts about Varane and although he is an upgrade I don't think he is in VVDs level. Maybe he will prove us wrong, i wish he will.
I also think Sancho is clearly talented but i have my doubts where he will play and what his best position is. My thoughts is that his skillset is more of a number 10-second striker rather a winger. At least in Premier. Miki had great numbers at Bundesliga and he also played right winger for them but when he came and Zose tried him at right wing he was average at best.
I also have doubts about Ronaldo. For most part of games he is a liability and he can't always score at last minutes to make up his bad performance. So i agree that he would better suited to City as the cherry on top of the cake. Because these type of players can either be the cherry on top of the cake or liability.
That said they are all talented, they can all play good stuff and improve significant the team. But until then i will have my concerns and the transfer window is perfect only on paper.
