So it looks like Smalling is nearing a move to Roma.
I'm on the fence with this one. Firstly, we have too many defenders and so to see one leaving is a plus. However, Smalling is the type of 'squad' player I'd hope we kept as he is best of rest (with the exception of Tuanzebe) . On the note of Tuanzebe, hopefully this means he will be 3rd choice CB for us this season and get a decent run in the side. A Smalling loan deal does give him game time at least and perhaps an opportunity for growth. I would much rather Rojo and/ or Jones left.
Thoughts?

I'm surprised to be honest, lot of reports tho .

I agree. Smalling has his limitations but has been picked by successive united managers ahead of the rest, and I rank him now as the 3rd best DEFENDER in the squad, after Maguire.

If he does leave, I wish him well. can't be accused of not giving his all, in the face of people try to make a mockery of him.
Also think Southgate was a bit shoddy the way he publicly dissed him when he was dropped from the England squad.

Maybe a change will be good for him - if he can get a proper run of games and be taken seriously again.

Good luck Mike.

It’s a sensible decision.

Ultimately we should be looking to move Smalling, Jones and Rojo on. None are good enough, and it shouldn’t matter what order they are sold.

The net spend could be quite interesting this summer couldn't it?

Redman
It's a year loan.

Rojo and Jones should be out before smalling, he is clearly our 3rd best cb.

Makes sense for the player. He is our longest serving player currently 4th or 5th choice. Makes sense to get a nice loan fee and wages off the books. Nice experience for him and his family. Great city decent weather a improving league and regular game time at his age will be his priority. Looks like a win win all round.
I wish him the best actually.

The squad reshaping has begun!

Yes TruRedDevil now OLE needs to get rid of Rojo, Jones, Sanchez and Young, we have a very young energetic first 11 we need some additions specially in the creative/ attacking department, Fernandes in fromt of Pogba and McTommy would have been great this season with Lingard and Mata as back ups. Great to see Ole ranks Tuanzabe as our third choice central defender. i wouldn't be oppposed to see Garner/ Gomes starting instead of lingard in the 10 role. Good to see Greenwood getting minutes the kid is going to be very special, all we need now is to convert all that possesion into goals.

True ken. Wish him well. Good player but looks like limited game time. He's got to think of his career and at least he's looking at options instead of taking the easy choice and staying just to pick up his wages.

Jred, I thought Roma are paying for that loan? Does that not go in to the P&L?

There is no point keeping players who aren't integral for the future of our club. The moment a decent offer comes in let them leave.

When Bailly recovers we will have Tuanzebe and him as cover for Harry and Victor.

Angel its reportedly 2.5 mill so I'm not sure it makes a massive difference to the net spend .
But no doubt its another opportunity to start some Glazer bashing,

I didn’t know it was a loan, I don’t have time in the day to find out.
Jred
In terms of Glazer bashing as you put it, apart from hocking us up in hundreds of millions in debt, millions going out in dividends and not a cent being invested etc, exactly why shouldn’t they be criticised for what they have done?

Redman
Each to there own but its all been said before .
I'm not massively bothered about net spend but again that's maybe just me.
This thread was on smalling tho and every thread being brought back to samd couple of topics gets s bit tedious imo.

Any economic analysis will show how the Glazers have saddled the club with debt, made hundreds of millions in profit, and never invested a cent of their own money. On top of that they have sizing up the possibility of selling the club for a couple of billion, making it almost certain that any new owners will follow suit.

In what way has the club benefitted from their ownership?

The fact that there are still ‘supporters’ averse to ‘Glazer bashing’ is baffling.
