Let's get a lighter discussion going.
Who do you think are the three most underrated United players of the last 20 years?

For me I'm going to go with:

1. Michael Carrick, you can't have an underrated conversation without mentioning Carrick.

2. Park Ji-Sung, absolutely loved Park his work rate and energy is often talked about. Yet he scored some very important goals. I'd love to have a 27 year old Park in our squad right now.

3. Rafael, it's odd the amount of praise that Rio/ Vidic/ Evra and VDS get for our great defence of the late 00's early 10's, yet Rafael often gets completely forgotten about. He might not have been at the others level, but he held his own in a great defence while also scored the occasional screamer.

1.) Fletcher
2.) Jonny Evans
3.) Paul Pogba.

I see what you did there DSG😂.

Rafael was decent but it ends there. He was rash and quite often caught out too far up the pitch. He was one of my favourites at the time but it’s clear to see why he was gotten rid of.

Could have put many right backs along with a 3 of Rio Vidic and Evra and made them look good from time to time. They got the praise because they were solid most of the time and world class players. Rafael does not fit that level.

For me I struggle to pick 3 underrated players in the last 20 but I’d agree on Carrick and Park. If you pushed me for another I’d probably plump for Chicharito or Berba.

Chicharito seems to be a forgotten man on here and we severely relied on his sub impact in Fergies last couple of seasons.

And Berba is simple, all I ever saw were the terms lazy, doesn’t work hard. And was a very important player for us despite having CR7, Rooney, Tevez and to an extent Chicha all around at some point. Again a personal favourite player of mine who was criminally underrated by a lot of his own supporters.

{Ed001's Note - Evra was never world class.}

Perhaps not 001, he was an extremely good left back for a few seasons. Now I come to think of it I struggle to name many truly world class left backs other than Roberto Carlos or Maldini. I guess you could make an argument for Lizarazu too. I personally wouldn’t put Cole in there but maybe that’s just my red tinted specs. Who would you put in there as a world class left back?

{Ed001's Note - Cole definitely and Maldini. Carlos too. Other than that I would be struggling.}

RedWhiskey, your description of Rafael could easily be the description of Evra. Rash, more focused on attacking, caught out of position. All things said about Evra at times. Yet he is remembered as a great while Rafael is forgotten. I agree that Rafael wasn't world class, but he was better than most people remember.

Berbatov is a good shout, as is Evans. I'd also say Saha who for me was a fantastic striker when fit. Great link up play, movement, pace and clinical finisher.

Rafael was the most overrated full back we have had for years. A rubbish player absolute crap imo i detested watching him in nearly every game he played. Was making the same stupid mistakes in his last season that he was making in his first.

Fair point shaps. Both were full of love for united and had a lot of passion so I suppose that clouds judgement on occasion.

Evans was dependable but had some shocking howlers in him. How Jones is still here over him though is beggars belief. Saha was great, you could see the change in attacking play with him over RVN. Nistelrooy was great but it meant having to play up to the box and camp until he got a sniff, Saha on the other hand made us more fluid and gave us more options.

dennis irwin was better than both evra and cole.

{Ed001's Note - very true, Irwin was a fantastic player, though he was better on the right.}

Yorke for me, outstanding player got a lot of credit but maybe not as much as he deserved. He was right up there with the very best at the time.

Ken I agree I think people wished he had reached his potential rather than him being ‘underrated’. He didn’t seem to iron out his mistakes at all.

Comparing Evra and Rafael is plain bonkers.

Would be easier if you asked for overrated players.

1. Carrick
2. Butt
3. Park.

Roberto Carlos was fantastic going forward but couldn’t tackle to save his life which can be said about most fullbacks these days. Trent can’t tackle either. All these great attacking fullbacks were in very good attacking sides but when put under pressure defensively they crumbled.

Why was Evans sold, still a solid defender now, better than most of your options, not a piss take just genuinely curious.

Had a poor season in 14/ 15, people still thought jones and smalling could make it at the club and LVG was not a fan.

Agree with dwight York. Loved him loved his attitude on the pitch. The bigger the occasion the bigger the smile. Not always the most professional looking back but standards were different then a bit like robson but come match day they delivered.
He had all the talent and for s couple of seasons was right up there with the best. Proper player a players player.

1. The little pea
2. Anderson
3. Park.

Irwin. I cannot recall him having a bad game. Rarely made a mistake. Played either side of the pitch. Defensively sound and potent foing forward. Excellent striker of a ball. Never made a fuss. Never looked for headlines. The perfect professional footballer.

Agree jred. But standards are different as are expectations nowadays.
Im sure every generation says this but the changes we've experienced and seen in everything from the age of 20 to 50 is phenomenal. Its like living in 2 different worlds.
Jeez I'm getting old.

Carrick, Saha and Berbatov or Rooney.

Irwin is not underrated. Fergie said of all the United players he managed only Dennis irwin would be guaranteed a start in his sll time 11.

23.) 06 May 2020
06 May 2020 20:50:22
1. Irwin
2. Ronny Johnsen
3. Henrik Larsson - was barely here but when you listened to Rooney and Ronaldo talk about how he helped them with his movement and advice, then see what they went in to be, I'll give him my number 3 spot. The Celtic connection obviously helps.

Ken. True Fergie recognised his worth but honestly how many of us did the same.

I did with my irish bias Salford😂😂
I get your point mate but he was one of our best ever full backs.
