Great article ed 001.
How Bruce never got an England cap is beyond me.

{Ed001's Note - I know there were a lot of good defenders around then, but Bruce and Pallister together was easily the best English pairing, so they should have played together nationally as well. England have never been managed well.}

Superb article Ed! Brucey was slow but had great awareness, tend to forget how good he was on the ball (and what a great penalty taker! ) . Pally was deceptively quick and could clean up if Brucey was caught out. He wasn’t given a fair crack by England. Well that’s what I remember from when I was 13!

{Ed001's Note - that sounds like an excellent summation of the pair to be honest mate.}

I'll never forget his injury time double against Sheffield Wednesday which helped us secure our first league title in 26 years! It was my first season as a league match ticket book holder as it was known back then and I haven't missed a season since. Great memories!

Nice piece thanks Ed001!

{Ed001's Note - cheers DLIB, really glad you enjoyed.}

Glad you agree Ed. I thought Maguire would be similar to Brucey, but ‘he’s a just sh*t Steve Bruce! ’.

{Ed001's Note - Maguire wishes he was like Bruce! Sadly these days players are not as capable of using their own brain as they used to be. They have less basic understanding of the game as everything is handed to them on a plate. They are coached and organised in everything they do, so they are never required to figure it all out for themselves. So we very rarely see the intelligent player who can make up for his weaknesses by using good common sense defending. It doesn't help that the focus is so high on technique and skill, to the detriment of picking players who can defend. Coaches would rather have midfielders all over the pitch than defenders at the back.}

Great article ED001. They were the perfect combination and had a very good understanding.

{Ed001's Note - they also showed that nice guys can win too, as both of them are genuinely nice blokes.}

Great article, pains me to remember some of that. Great partnership, Bruce should have definetley been capped but that was England's strongest position at the time. Butch, Adams, Walker from memory.

{Ed001's Note - it was, but they were the only English partnership and football teams are built on partnerships. It is not about having the best XI individuals, and Bruce and Pallister would have given a good foundation to the team.}

Superb article! Brucey was slow but a great reader of the game and think we forget how good he was on the ball (and what a penalty taker too! ) Pally was deceptively fast and brave too, don’t think he got a fair run for England. Well that’s how I remember it when I was 13!
