Cavani is 33.

Jamie Vardy - 33, very nearly 34, scored 23 goals last season and 5 already this season.

Aguero - 32 - scored 16 last season

Aubameyang - 31 - scored 22 last season

Ibrahimovic - scored 17 for us when he was mid 30s.

Cavani can still do it! I believe!

It's a bit of a gamble, but he could be really good for us. He's a proper striker, great finishing and movement, gets in the right positions etc. He was never exactly a speed demon, and he's certainly not got faster at 33, but he's not as slow as some people might be thinking.

I've heard he has excellent work rate as well.
The problem is not the cavani deal but CBs and RW.

The difference is Cavani hasn’t been playing much over the last two seasons, whereas the examples you give are of players that have been playing consistently.

Cavani said he considered retiring during the summer, he has to regain form, fitness and confidence at that age.

100% he can still do it. We have signed older strikers such as Sheringham, Larsson and Ibrahimovic with great success.

If Cavani can stay fit then he will be an excellent player for us, he offers something different to our other options, while he also has a wealth of experience at the highest level. You don't forget how to score.

The real question is can he stay fit. His record over the last two seasons hasn't been great. Yet there is enough to suggest that maybe he wasn't injured as often as suggested as things between him and Neymar weren't ideal.

He could be the ideal to bridge the gap for Greenwood. Personally with the number of strikers we have and a lack of wide players I think we should be looking to play a front two, probably Rashford and Cavani starting with Greenwood and Martial rotating in. We could still see a front three with Rashford and Greenwood wide and have either Cavani or Martial central.

I think Cavani’s biggest negative at the moment is that his name isn’t Jadon Sancho. Apart from that once he starts banging the goals in and fans see his work rate that has never been questioned they will really like him. If it doesn’t work and he doesn’t score then we stick with the current front 3 who aren’t doing too badly.

I saw a lot of people on here said they wanted a backup striker added as we are weak up top and we got one who won’t impede the progress of the youngsters.

Danny, he thought about retirement due to him and his partner having C.V. However, he has decided not to. Scholes actually retired and came out of retirement and did pretty well. Cavani has always be a perfect professional, and keeps himself in good shape. He has never relied on pace, just hard work and good movement. He might take a few weeks to get fit enough to last 90 minutes without a drop off, but then that is what a squad is for.

If he hasn't played much football for the last two years then you could say he has had a decent rest.

I think he is going to be a real hit and I'm excited by his signing.

GDS

I wanted a striker, said so a number of times, not so much a back up one as I remain unconvinced with Martial, who has been on a bare patch, again, recently. Not a problem with Cavani, would have preferred the lad from Madrid Jovic, but Cavani will be ok short term, gives us options. My observation is that it hardly seemed planned. Cavani was available for weeks and months yet, we go and sign him last day. He has got some pulses racing, so maybe that deflected from the paucity of our window.

I also said we should have walked away from Sancho weeks ago and focussed elsewhere, instead all eggs in one basket. The kids they bought are interesting, short videos make them look good. The Uruguayan lad has a nice centre of balance but until you see them at the level, it is hard to tell. Maybe there will be a Critstiano in there, you never know.

Red man,

I agree with all of that, there is no question about the fact the board and decision makers are useless and they do things without a plan but to just relentlessly make that point on every single post whatever we are talking about gets us nowhere so I tend to try and talk about the point in hand rather than bringing everything back to that.

There is no reason why cavani can’t push martial out of the team or rotate by the way, I doubt he has signed wanting to be a sub and that is what we want really.

The fact of the matter is we could have signed him in Jan if we wanted him. He was free at the start of the summer, but we didn’t even look at him until the last week of the window. He’s the definition of a panic signing.

He might do well, but he isn’t a player to take the club forward.

Question really is, will Cavani be a Zlatan or a Falcao type of signing.

13.) 07 Oct 2020

mbd, Zlatan came to United scoring 38 league goals for PSG.
Whereas Cavani is coming after scoring 4 league goals.

But if Cavani remains fit and on form, he will easily oust Martial as the main striker.

TRD, I think Martial might surprise people. I don't see Martial just accepting the loss of his place, and I think he'll fight rather than sulking. Competition could push Martial on to the next level, and by the time Cavani leaves, Greenwood could be ready to push him for the spot.

He sulked when he lost his spot on jersey to zlatan.
But he is not a child anymore i'd exoect a professional response this time around.

Maybe but he hasn’t played since March and over the course of the last 3 seasons his scoring record in the french league has come down.

During this time he has scored a goal every X minutes:

16/ 17 - 85minutes
17/ 18 - 92 minutes
19/ 20 - 151 minutes

Will he score, Yes. The question really is, how many will he score and how many of these will be in big games.

We will just have to wait and see.
