Quick question.

Why would United extend Ighalo's deal and then go on and sign Cavani.

I love Cavani and he will bang a lot of goals but why would you extedn Ighalo to January when you know that your going to sign Cavani or If you know Ighalo isn't going to be getting games.

What is the thought process behind this?

Ighalo's contract was extended on 1 June, Cavani wasn't in United's transfer plans then.
Ole wanted a forward but right wing was the priority and if we signed Sancho, Greenwood would have moved to CF with Martial. But when it became clear that wasn't going to happen, money was freed up to get a forward and buy as many youngsters as possible.

It's obvious, they never intended on signing Cavani until 3-4 days ago when it was clear they wouldn't get Sancho and the club quickly cobbled together a deal the biggest name player they could easily sign to save face.

That said, Cavani is a good player, and many a great deed can be done by mistake.
My brother got drunk the night before he had training with the fire brigade, so drunk that he overslept and missed going. That was the day of the 7/ 11 bombings in London, they happened in the station he used at the time he should have been passing through. He may or may not have been involved in that terrible incident had he not got pissed the night before. Pure luck.

Likewise Cavani might turn out to be our best signing of the summer. If he does well then great, but that doesn't mean he was a well thought-out, planned signing. It means they got lucky.

We were still playing association football matches in june due to the lockdown/ house arrest policies.

We obviously couldn't sing a striker whilst we were still playing the 19/ 20 season so we extended ighalo to cover those matches left over in the season.

I think the key factor is Cavani never intended to come. But then he could find another team.

Cavaini is cheaper than ighalo and better so looks like a good deal.
