Why can't we play Axel with Maguire and Lindelof, play wing backs AWB on the right and Telles on the left.

Because it's too slow. Better to play Shaw in there. Axel, Maguire/ Lindelof + Shaw and when Bailly is back use Bailly, Maguire/ Lindelof, Axel.

Because luke shaw has played really well as a left centre back in a 3.

Covers well for the wing back and overlaps to add an extra attacking presence.

Also having a left footer in the back 3 helps us with our build up play which has plagued us horribly for years.

Why add Maguire in?

I'd play with the same team that played against psg swapping either greenwood or cavani for martial. Nobody deserves to lose their spot on the last peeformance. Why change a winning formula? We would have options from the bench if we need to change it up.

Shaw has been excellent at LCB and I see no reason to drop him.

While I think Lindelof is the better defender, Maguire is more suited to the EPL. If he has Shaw and Tuanzebe either side of him, his major weakness will be mitigated, while we will have an strong aerially dominant defender in the middle.

Lindelof might be the better choice in the UCL, where teams are less physical and you have less high balls to deal with.

Shaw is a better LCB than LB 🤣🤣
If we’re going with a 3 then he has to play there. Lindelof or Maguire in the middle and Axel to the right.

I don't like shaw at lb primarily because hee offers veey little in the final third and he gets caught out off position too often he also doesn't have the mobility required to get up and down like the best modern day full backs.
But at lcb he has always played very well. It suits him. He has less ground to cover physically and is closer to his fellow defenders. He is aggressive in the challenge and has a good first touch is comfortable on the ball and his short range passing is good. Deceptively quick over 20 yards too.
The position suits him now that we have a natural attacking option at lwb in telles i think shaw is a great foil to play just behind him.
Getting the blend of the 3 cbs right is the challenge.
For me shaw is 1st choice hopefully axel stays fit and plays well enough ( like we all hope and believe he will) to be another 1st choice.
That leaves harry lindelof and bailly fighting it for the 3rd spot.
With 2 games a week they will all need to play a part.

Ken

I think you are trying to say that at LCB Shaw is a quicker Daley Blind. CB is a lot easier to play than LB and if we play 3 at the back Shaw deserves his place at the moment. As a pure LB that’s a more difficult decision.

Apart from Shaw's deficiency in the attacking department, I think his biggest weakness defensively is his seemingly unconscious drifting from flank into a more central role thus getting caught out too often. At times his pace gets him out of trouble so we don't notice this flaw. As a LCB, the drifting problem is solved.

He is not a quicker Daley Blind. Blind was a very smart player, he was always in the right place, Shaw plays with his physicality and pace and he is not as good on the ball. I would go with the same 3 at the back if all fit. I can't wait for the match!
