RIP Tommy Doc

For the older fan like me I remember him arriving, the relegation, yet the great hope as he bought Hill and Coppell, Pearson arriving from Hull. The verve of the team attacking on the wings, the quick quip from the Doc, the 76 semi final, the tears of the 76 final, the joy of the 77 final, Albert square in 77, the headlines about the trainers wife. What a ride, some amazing times.

Great potential in that team Red Man. Very attacking and a complete rebuild from the relegation team. It’s sad that he was sacked, as he said ‘you can’t help who you fall in love with’ and it was certainly no flash in the pan.

He was a typical United Manager, the season in Div 2 was cathartic in some ways and it’s a shame he didn’t get the chance to finish what he started. To make things worse, we went from the Doc to Sexton, a dreadful period best forgotten.

RIP Doc.

A real character and an underrated coach I reckon. Macari, Coppell, Hill, Pearson. A great team to watch. The Sexton years were awful. I also remember them. Unfortunately.
Jim McClean passed away last week as well, another great Scottish coach.
