Gary nev was passionate and articulate last night.
I'm convinced that this breakaway will not happen as set out.
Imo it should not happen as currently proposed.
I'm all for some radical change within the euro comps. i'm also for redial change withing the league structure in the UK.
The major clubs can make more money and should be able to maximise their earnings in a fair and equitable way.
Its about finding a solution that still maintains the current domestic promotion / relegation / competitive arena.
So far the proposal is like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. So there will be counter proposals and comprimises made on all sides.

If the new esl simply replaced the champions league, and maybe those who enter it don't play in the league Cup to allow for extra games, and with qualification somewhat similar to the champions league, I'd be all for it.

if this was a comp that was fair to every club and as put by perez its to save football

but its not, its to make the rich richer

the way it has been set up is not fair. if it was a case of a yearly comp and to qualify the top 3 or top 4 from each country participated then you could say fair enough as it would give other clubs a chance to get that status and earn the extra income made from taking part.

while still having the super concept. but its not are these clubs going to filter the money down, i don't think so.

I'd love to see the domestic season happen in a more condensed window and teams qualify for an ESL type league at the end of the season. Kind of like the playoffs for NBA/ NFL but more exciting as the teams are from different countries. The Champions League itself is too wide right now. Unfortunately the whole aim for this is guaranteed income for the biggest clubs so that type of suggestion is a non-runner.

Ken, I suspect you're right. I suspect the outcome will be a restructuring of the UCL/ EL. My gut feeling is this is an attempt to try and strong arm UEFA into making changes they don't want to make.

While UEFA are attempting damage control by painting the clubs in the worst possible light to weaken their position by creating unrest with their fans.

What we are seeing are businessmen representing either the clubs or the governing bodies fighting over their rights to a greater share of the spoils.

Ultimately I suspect their will be some compromise, a middle ground or halfway house agreement.

From a football fans perspective clearly something needs to change within the structure of football. We have too many professional clubs and the current model is unsustainable. We are seeing clubs go out of existence up and down the leagues on an almost monthly basis.

The team that won the SPL this season went bankrupt a few years ago and had to re-enter the leagues at the bottom and work their way back up. They have more league titles than any other British team, yet they went under. Leeds almost went to the wall and spent 16 years outside the top division. Former league winners Blackburn have tumbled down. Former European winners Forest struggling in the Championship, while former winners Villa have spent the past decade bouncing between the divisions.

Top level European competition needs to be accessible to everyone, yet the current model isn't working. So quite radical change is probably needed, but it has to be for the benefit of all and not just a privileged few.

Ken

Parties don’t start negotiations by offering the position where they want to end up. This ESL is a strong suggestion designed to get serious impact and I suspect the end game will look very different after negotiations.

Of course redman I agree. I do it for a living. I don't like the tactics employed by either party at the moment. These discussions are not going to be for the faint hearted but solutions will be found.
