I see 2-3 very interesting players available on free transfers.
Two of them are our own lads Rafael and Robbie Brady.
I'm personally very surprised nobody has signed Robbie Brady up. He was around 35k wages in Burnley and for a backup left back he could be pretty decent for us. Former United lad, and definitely not a bad player by any account. I personally liked him as a club whenever he played as he used to go forward quite a bit.
Rafael, for emotional reasons, he was a bit nasty, a bit reckless but I did enjoy whenever he used to play. Not sure how his legs are these days.
Then there's another one, Scott dann, end of his career nobody signing him up.
I am sure we will have a CB crisis this year. Why?
Bailly is always injured, and we will be one injury away to Maguire, lindelof and Varane to having no one even capable of filling in.
We play a lot of games, and I think someone like a Scott dann who plays maybe 5-6 games a season could work out well for us. We have no one in the academy who play CB for us, Matic is there but is he even a CB?, would Phil Jones be even fit to play?

I would seriously consider signing Scott dann and Brady as backups to play a very limited role on a 1 year contract.
I've personally been very disappointed with how telles has played for us, he has a great left foot but hardly gets into good positions to cross. Shaw breaks his neck to get there.

I might come across as extremely stupid signing 2 really average players, but I think even if they play 4-5 games, an average performance there could be difference between a trophy and nothing

We go into the season with only 3 CBs as Bailly is a crock.

Robbie Brady wouldn't get picked at United ahead of Shaw, Telles, Williams and probably Dalot at LB.

Scott Dann can't find a side as he isn't even Championship level anymore.

I'm all for picking up good quality players on a free. If you look at some of the players Barcelona and PSG have picked up this summer then it's clear you can find some great players on a free.

Dann and Brady are not two of them though.

Heaton is good enough to be an EPL first choice goalkeeper, so picking him up to be our 3rd choice just adds extra depth.

Grant is a solid back up keeper and we signed him to be our back ups back up.

It makes sense signing experienced keepers as back up on free transfers. They are hardly ever going to play but you do need that strength in depth just in case as its such a key position.

The biggest issue our squad has currently is having too many players who aren't good enough blocking the path to the first team for those academy graduates who could grow into being good enough.

If we had an injury crisis at LB and all of Shaw, Telles, Williams and Dalot were not available for one reason or another then I'd hope we give Alvaro Fernandez a run out.

Same at CB, if needed then Mengi, Bernard or Fish should be given a chance rather than clearly not good enough Scott Dann.
