Have I missed something? There's a few posts taking issue with optimistic posters, but I don't remember seeing a lot of optimistic posts.

I'm optimistic we will see a defined style of play, and that players will get picked on merit. I'm optimistic we have a Manager who knows his arse from his elbow and might actually improve players. Does that mean I think we will immediately start competing? No it doesn't doesnt. But I am optimistic that over time things will improve.

Seeing McFred today tells us exactly what is wrong, a new Manager thinks they are still the best option. Perhaps if we had CF one of them might have been dropped for Eriksen, and if the club ever sort a new CM out then we may see one or both of them dropped. The other worry was the lack of urgency, everything seemes so casual but hey, it's game 1.

The live chat was frisky, we had a couple of clowns on there seemingly just wanting to cause trouble, but even some regulars were getting very upset. It was poor today, but it's just one game; let's give ETH a chance to get a few more in and work some magic.

I didn’t see a single sign of any style or improvement. New signings poor to non existent.

Not one positive sign for me and that’s being honest, it was shockingly bad.

Is that the managers fault Ed or the players? . We said the exact same with ole but then thought it was just him, then the same with ralf even though he had previous for a pressing style and now ETH. 3 different ages, styles and experience of coach and yet it looks like 11 strangers out for a kick about. Players seem incapable of transferring weekly game plan to the ACTUAL match.

{Ed014's Note - well he’s supposed to be the best you’ve had since Fergie left and in 6 weeks he’s changed nothing and that’s a concern no matter how bad the players.

They literally don’t seem to have a clue and nothing ETH did changed that.

I was honestly expecting a lot more, aside it’s the first game, there should have been something to shout about and I didn’t see it.

Even Malacia came on, got skinned and then hacked the guy down and how that wasn’t a penalty and how McTominay wasn’t sent off our about the extent of things actually that went for you.

Bob on ed014, like watching Ole and Ralf with turgid football and a lot of headless chickens running around aimlessly…almost as if we had no preseason, worrying early signs and this may get worse if not addresses immediately…rumours of Arnautovic hopefully just rumours or we clearly have no plan and getting extremely desperate…laughing stock of the league last season and carrying it on into this. we need a cb, 2 mfds, striker and a right back bare minimum just to make us competitive but top 4 is a mere pipe dream.

It is as though they have picked up from where the left last season.

Odly, during pre season they played better at a higher tempo. Back in the EPl they have defaulted back to their factory settings.

It was shocking, Ten Hag has his work cut out. McFred are abysmal and Maguire, Shaw and Dalot should have all been sold plus many more.

Whislt some may see this post as an over reaction, a simply saw the same old Utd, that have played like this for a few seasons.

I obviously didn’t see you in pre season, aside from the last part of the Athletico game but posters were saying you’d looked better so that’s why I watched the game today.

100% not a single difference from last season which is ridiculous and you know I don’t rate your squad but I at least expected to see a style, work rate and maybe even as a result defensively much better but it was devoid of anything.

All of our issues from last season are still there and the squad is now even weaker. Honestly it’s got to the point where I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. We aren’t, smart efficient or ruthless at any level within the club. Top clubs are and that’s why they succeed. Really think we need to do like Arsenal and bin off some of the older non performers and replace them with the likes of Iqbal, savage etc. I get the feeling that the board will pressure ETH to keep playing the same wasters though. They’re All experts after all.

It's not the result that's disappointing its that we looked like last years team. I can only assume that the players didn't do a thing they were told.

I just didn't see any real evidence of team pressing, I didn't see the off ball movement I expe Ted. I did see Erikson chewing out some players for their pedestrian play though.

Thought our new signings were the best players, we’ve played in pre season and defined way and then with the Martial injury it has had to change. We are desperate for more quality to be brought in, we need a right back, a centre mid and a forward or we will finish between 8th and 12th. The next few weeks will define our season. We will lose games this season we all know that, we can still finish top 4 if we lose games but the players we have at the moment aren’t good enough for top 6 never mind top 4.

How on this Gods earth is Maguire the captain? He is totally doggy doo doos! If he keeps walking round playing sideways passes then pointing forwards I swear I will cut his bloody arms off!

Roy Keane. Robbo et al would have been handing out bollocking left right and centre. The problem is that Maguire cannot really bollock people for being rubbish when he is one of the worst on the park.

VdB came on apparently? Did anyone see him?
