Just been reading that Andreas Pereira has been playing as a DM for Flamengo.
For me he was a never as effective as an attacking midfielder and not too quick as a wide player.
What he does have is a very good touch and close control, ability to skip past 1-2 in a crowd, a bit of tenacity as he is not someone who lacks workrate.
The positional sense of being a DM and his general physicality is something which would prevent him from playing there but I think that aspect can be improved with training.
If he has a decent season with the brazillian side I think he could give us a good problem to solve.
I don't think he passing is bad or his crossing or set piece.
Interesting to see how his season pans out.
Very outside chance of course.

I can see where you're coming from, he has a lot of a Carrick type in his play and his positional awareness on the pitch has always been a good aspect of his game, hence why he can play as 8, 10 and at rm.

However his physical presence has never developed since he first came to us. He is lean for a cm in the prem and very lean for a sole DM. He also doesn't seem to use his body very well without the ball. As an attacker he is good at getting his body between the ball and the challenge to win free kicks, but defensively I can't remember him being good at shielding the ball or out muscling another player with the ball in the air.

If he had been coached to fill the DM role back when he first joined then maybe he could play the role for us today, but I feel he was always seem as an am and coached accordingly.

As such I would rather the club look outside to fill the role rather than shoehorn in a current squad member.

Garner will be the one.

He is one of those talented players who sometimes slip through the cracks due to being a jack of all trades instead of a master of one.

When he first joined the academy they said they thought he would end up as a No.8 or a No.6.

But due to his size he often played wide or in the No.10 role. He never seemed to fill out and progress. Due to him not being physically able to cope with playing deeper he never developed the skills and understanding to do so. While he doesn't have to pace to be a wide player, and he can't play No.10 at a high enough standard for a top side.

I'm not sure the loans worked in his favour, which is a shame.

I agree with Keane, Garner looks the most likely of the midfielders in our academy to make the step up.

I'm not pining hopes
He's 99% going to get sold.
But given he's said he's going to play DM this season, I would still keep a keen eye on him.
I don't think ander Herrera is the most physical guy but how he uses his body makes him better.
It's just interesting to see how he plays this season but we all know he has no future here.
I don't think garner plays for us next season, I think he gets another loan in the premier league.
