If Rooney commits within the next few weeks I will be behind him. If he waits to see if we get a CL spot before deciding to stay or go then many suspicions will be proved. Hopefully Wayne will show he is committed to rolling his sleeves up and getting the club that made him a great through this transition. Quite a pivotal moment for the team ahead. This to me is his opportunity to take a brave and natural next step into a position as captain that could put his name in the history books as a true Man U legend.

I like the idea of Evans for the reasons you have given. However, I'm not sure Evans will be a guaranteed starter by next season. I think long term our centre ba ks will be Jones and a new signing, whether that be Garay or someone else. For me Jones can be a top top CB for us for many years to come. He looks a born leader to me, so he would get my vote.

3.) 07 Feb 2014
Rooney all way for me.
Don't care what's happened in the past he is a leader on the pitch and inspires young players.
I think he that he will finish his career at Old Trafford.

4.) 07 Feb 2014
Rooney if he stays.

Jones as vice captain.

5.) 07 Feb 2014
Simmo, unless Rooney has a career ending injury whilst at MU, there is little chance he will end his career with MU. He will probably go back to Everton in his 30's if they want him. I see him playing in the MLS and possibly the Middle East. That being said I see him being here for a few more years if he signs a new deal and I think he should be captain if he signs a new deal.

6.) 07 Feb 2014
If Rooney signs now then it will probably be him.
But for me I would give it to fletcher with Jones vice captain

7.) 07 Feb 2014
Do you not think that a captain on the pitch should also set an example? I like Rooney the player, but in my opinion he has a bit of a petulant side to him at times and a few "red mist" moments. I also prefer the idea of a captain being a player from the back or midfield where they can see the game better as a whole and organise better when needed. That's just a personal view though.

Will, you need to give it to someone who will play every game when fit. Rooney and Jones will both be first choice when both are fit. Fletcher will be a squad player once we strengthen in the summer. Like Ferdinand, Giggs & Evra now, Fletcher will still offer a lot to the players in the dressing room.

Personally, I would use the captaincy to help get a top quality CB/CM in during the summer. I think with the new manager in, he needs the captain to be the absolute best and someone he brings in might better as they will be with him rather than still stuck in the old regime. I don't see anyone at United suitable really. Jones is too young, Flether is a ticking time bomb with his illness unfortunately, Rooney never for me, I don't care what he has done this season, you can kind of look past what he has done as a player but not as a captain, RVP too injury prone.

Personally, I think we need Hummels or Vidal. They are great players, can lead by example on the pitch and would have the respect of our players and the opposition. They are a good age and would be the managers choice to really start his reign as manager.

Plenty will disagree I am sure, but it's just my opinion. I would be p*ssed if Rooney gets it though, as he is not what we need as captain. He needs to be a leader on and off the pitch, and set the right example for the younger players at the club and that is not what Rooney does, for me.

Why not Carrick, he has just been renewed for 2 years. I have a hard time seeing Rooney as a United Captain.

11.) 07 Feb 2014
No matter how talented a player is, and how much drive he has, if he puts in a transfer requests, and then asks to leave a club less than 2 years later, fails to keep himself in decent shape, bangs grannies, and seems reluctant to sign a new contract, in no way, he does not deserve to be made captain.

There are plenty of more loyal players in the team who deserve the captaincy more than him.

We pride ourselves on our loyalty to the club, it's players and it's manager. And yet we're willing to give the captaincy to one of the most disruptive figures in the dressing room.

He barely deserves a new contract, let alone the captaincy.

I honestly think, with some summer reinforcements, we're better off without Rooney.

Mick, for footballing reasons we should make Rooney captain. I couldn't give a monkey's about his private life as long as it doesn't affect his performances. Rooney proved this season that if he pulls his finger out of his behind and gets himself into shape, then his performances will improve. We could get 2.5-3.5 more years out of Rooney and then Jones will be the obvious candidate to replace Rooney as captain.
