As the WC approaches England are getting less and less inspiring. Reminds me of us under ole. slow, turgid, predictable and one dimensional.

Atleast ole defeated bigger teams. Think Southgate is worse.

I have referred to Southgate for some time, as Ole Gunnar Southgate because of the same don't lose mentality. We should have won that Euro final but after the early goal, tried not to lose. Only good thing is that now we have ETH, the idiots in charge at OT are very unlikely to grab OGSouthgate when he likely becomes available late this year. Besides, England are so dull to watch I went to a pub with no TV last night, bliss.

England have missed there chance to hire Potter who'd have been an inspired choice.

No doubt though if Southgate is to be replaced it'll be Sean Dyche who'd get the nod.

{Ed014's Note - Potter has way too much to offer at club level, he’d be nuts to take that role.

Ed014, it'd be an awful move for Potter, but from an England perspective Potter is the best English manager by a mile.

If they are looking to replace Southgate, and Potter is off the table, then the pool of English managers is very slim. Which means picking someone who isn't good enough or going with a foreign manager. Which is something the FA seem to be against for some reason.

Personally I think Jose Mourinho would be a great option as an international manager. His style of play better suits knockout football and he has the personality to carry the role without being crushed by it.

Whether he'd want it is another Matt.

{Ed014's Note - not sure about Mourinho mate, think there needs to be an acceptance England managers in the main are poor.

I did like Hoddle it was a shame he was a tad odd.

Never understood in international football how the manager can be from a different country to the players.

DSG, if you don't get that then when you realise that 100's of players have played for counties to which they were born and raised due to either having a relative from that country (regardless of whether they have ever set foot in that country) or even through just changing their nationality.

Do you think the club was ever really considering Southgate? It was probably just paper talk. It should have been quite obvious after the loss to Italy and his failure to change tactics that he was nowhere near a good enough manager.

It's really interesting watching the good ones. They demonstrate in their gestures an absolutely clear idea of what they want each player to do. They communicate their ideas forcefully and unequivocally. The expect a lot. And they are quick to make adjustments when things are not going well, or when the other team changes its approach. The average or bad ones set out their stall and then don't know how to counter or change when required. They are overly loyal to players who are clearly not good enough any longer and who's weaknesses have been exposed. The top managers set up their teams to win, and not to not lose.

Come on the England managers job isn't hard.

Play the the strengths of the players at your disposal.

England don't have great CB's or dominant CDM's.

So to keep defensively solid play either a 343 or a 3412.

Pick players in form and not your favourites who are in terrible form.

I'd probably be one of Henderson or Ramsdale in goal.

A back three of Walker, Tomori and Kilman. With White, Stones and Coady as back up. With Guehi pushing for a squad place.

TAA at RWB where his lack of defending isn't as much an issue, with Reece James as back up. Chilwell at LWB with Shaw as back up.

Midfield is obviously Rice and Bellingham. With players like Phillips, Mount, JWP and Gallagher as back up.

Front three is where is gets interesting, but options of Sterling, Kane, Saka, Foden, Sancho, Rashford, Toney and probably Maddison on current form.

Not difficult.

I don't see why it has to be an English manager, I would give it to Klopp post Liverpool, god he would do wonders with thise players on the international stage. Other than Potter I could think of 20 other foreign managers I would prefer over another Emglish manager.

Howe is probably next best English manager after that you have to look lower down the leagues, Gareth Ainsworth springs to mind as someone doing a good job who deserves a shot at a bigger club maybe one for the future?

How has won nothing of note. Jose alienates too many players and what does he build for the future Klopp would miss the day to day involvement. Potter needs to win something and prove himself with Chelsea. Poch might be a reasonable shout but it is true there is a dearth of good English managers.

Shappy England managers job is not hard? Of course it is.
You fail if you don't win.
No manager bar 1 70 years ago has ever won anything.
Your friend Southgate came closest.
It's an impossible job nearly, as expectation always is greater than players capabilites never mind managers.

Ken, not hard to pick your best players and choose a system that gets the best out of what you have.

Winning things would be great, but the reality is that winning at international level also requires a large slice of luck.

Are your best players available for the tournament?

Are they in good form?

How will suspensions and injuries impact your side during the tournament?

Will you get lucky with the draw, or will you have to play tops sides in early rounds?

If your best three players gets injured before the tournament, and your next best three players are in bad form, you then get a tough draw with over half of your best 11 either missing or in poor form then you can get knocked out despite being a top side.

It would also help if we had produced some good CB recently.
