Any on the Ed's know if we've got any interest in Tonali? Super player.

{Ed001's Note - he is seen as an alternative to Anderson, mainly due to Newcastle having a need to sell someone. Might be worth a punt ;-)

I'd prefer Tonali to Anderson.

Would love either, but will be difficult getting one in. Really need to strengthen the midfield and fullbacks area. Genuinely painful seeing Shaw and Dalot start for us season after season, painfully crap.

I wouldn't bet against this Ed :)

I really don't think that Tonali would add anything to the team. He's a decent enough player, but I don't feel he is top quality. Guimaraes would be a better signing. Nmecha as well.

Considering our best CM is leaving in the summer, bringing anyone in so that Ugarte doesn't play would add something to the team.

Tonali is a very good player and would add a lot to our poor midfield. Guimaraes too, please. Newcastle, when all fit, have a great midfield. I would say one of the best midfields in the Premier League as a whole.

Guimaraes is a fantastic midfielder, but he's already 28, and he will be hugely expensive. I can't imagine we will be willing to spend that much on a player that age.

Tonali and Anderson are also both top class. Again, they will both be very expensive, but Anderson is 3 years younger, so that might actually be a factor. Tonali might strengthen a position for 5-6 years, whereas Anderson might strengthen it for 8-10 years.

Baleba is another option, clearly a talented player, and he might be available for a more reasonable fee this summer. He's also very young at 22, so again he could be an important player for as much as 10 years. Adam Wharton is pretty regularly discussed, and probably better than Baleba, but I'm not convinced he's good enough physically to play alongside Kobbie.

Given we will almost certainly sign two midfielders this summer with Casemiro leaving, I think both new players will have to be comfortable playing with Mainoo in a midfield two behind Bruno, and comfortable playing together.

Otherwise, we are only ever one injury away from having a fairly weak midfield and potentially starting Ugarte, who doesn't look good enough at the moment, or likely to become good enough any time soon.

There's also Angelo Stiller from Stuttgart, Pablo Barrios from Atletico, and Bergvall from Spurs that we've either been linked with recently or at some point in the past. Goretzka and Ruben Neves will also be available on free transfers. Overall, I think there are far too many good options that are either much younger or much less expensive than Guimaraes to justify spending potentially £80 million on someone that turns 29 later this year.

Why, all of a sudden, does everyone think that 28 is too old? It is ridiculously naive to think we can have a team of 22 year olds.
Cass and Bruno are, by a country mile, our best players, and they are both in their 30s. I would even go as far as to say McGuire is our best CB, and he is in his 30s.

Shaw is our best LB.
The youngsters, while potential, that is all they are, and not even great ones at that.
It is delusional to think that 28 is too old.
What are Kane, 32, Lewendowski, 37, Ronaldo, 41, and Salah? The list is endless.

A wonderful player, tenacious, great engine, intelligent, exactly the type of profile we need in there, and would complement Mainoo, and hopefully we could get another in there, a younger lad, maybe Wharton or Anderson. We wouldn't know ourselves if we had legs in midfield.

Rumors are, Je Suis, that over 28 is against new club policy for new signings. Until we sign someone for the first team (not a back up goal keeper, for example), then I think this rumour will continue.

I am actually with JSU. Well, apart from the Maguire bit.

Jeepers, some people want players written off at 28 years old, or even moved on at 29. Scholes was 36 when he first retired. Keane was 34 when he left Utd.

Gerrard was 34. Lampard was 35. Cantona was only 30, but could have played for a few more years.

All class players.

Or would you rather spend money on a young risk......again.

I appreciate the Maguire bit, but like I said, all along I would much rather there have a Maguire who gives his all. Ok, his all is limited, but what’s our alternative, injury man de Ligt, who, when I said in the past, has always been injury prone all his career, the stat brigade rallied round and came up with bonkers figures.

How's that looking now?
De Ligt is ok when fit, but he is never fit, and now looks like he is out for the rest of the season. Total waste of time, so give me a Maguire in front of him any day.
