Interesting quotes from Rio Ferdinand on Rashy:

"Rashford needs to do is go talk to Michael Owen. Have coffee with Owen and listen to him talk about burnout, playing too many games at a young age and the effects that it has on your career for years to come. "
"It's important for young players to understand that you can't play every game. Sometimes you have to say you need rest. ".

Wouldn’t wish anyone to have to go and sit down with Michael Owen lol.

Owen before his injurys was class.

Well, isn't our manager himself a former striker? I want to know what Ferdinand actually thinks about Ole then.

{Ed014's Note - there’s not a lot to think about him as a striker, just a journeyman as the saying goes.

Let's Play, I'm guessing Rio means to talk to Owen about the damage you can do to your body by continually playing through injuries and not allowing yourself the proper rest. Owen really suffered with that and I think is a perfect example of why it's so important to manage workload correctly.

AA80, I do understand that but when your players are asked to talk to someone else about maintaining themselves when the manager was a player himself to start with, Rio even suggesting that feels crazy.

{Ed001's Note - Owen didn't play through injuries, he just tore his hamstrings too many times. Never once did he play through an injury, quite the opposite if anything.}

Ed014, that would be harsh on Ole. I think he was a very good striker and scored a lot of goals for us and he was very clinical with his finishing. I respect him as a player but as a manager I can't say much.

{Ed014's Note - just my opinion LPU, he didn’t do a lot for me and not a striker I ever feared us playing against mate.

Ed001, that's even more crazy. I guess that Owen isn't of much help then.

I wonder what would Owen suggest "not play too many games". Would Ole listen? Probably it's him that needs some advice on player management.

Ole was a brilliant finisher, one of the best, watched the goals he scored for us not that long ago and some were phenomenal, always fancied him for a goal and usually got one. Sure the OP was about teaching him about playing too many games as a kid not about being a striker, good way to slag off the manager again though eh.

Very average squad player. His record is not that great. Happy to sit on the bench. Really good crosser of a ball though when he replaced Beckham on the right foot a brief period. Good man to have on the bench. Never 1st choice really and was here a long time.
He lacked ambition and drive imo but it was a great time to be auto player so it was a hard club to leave back then. All in all like John o shea a good squad player but never played as much as the likes of o shea.

He scored 91 goals in the premier league 😂 a lot of apps off the bench too but he played 20 games less than O’Shea for united and O’Shea played for the club for 12 years. I know you dislike Ole Ken but making things up to change how he was as a player is a bit of an odd one. As you like to say that post you just wrote is absolute garbage.

Go back and watch his goals, as a striker for a team winning league titles, some amazing finishes, he was clinical, in the end injuries took their toll on him but you are either misremembering him or deliberately underplaying it for whatever reason. I know you’ll say I’m totally wrong as always but on this occasion please do me a favour and go and watch his goals, genuinely think you might be describing a different player or misremembering him.

Ole was a really good striker- suggesting otherwise is just plain daft. He just fell in love with the club and the area and didn't want to be anywhere else -thats not lacking ambition - Le Tiisier, Shearer did it too. Plenty of teams Ole could have been a 1st choice for. i'm no fan of his as a manager but as a player at his peak he was class.

Average squad player? Balderdash. He was an outstanding squad player, never complained, great goal scorer, looked like he might take Beckhams place until the injury.

I'm not saying he was a worldie but to call him average is plain wrong.

Out of the wrong side of the bed this morning tony🤣🤣🤣
So he didn't play as much as o shea.
Check out the minutes played for each gds2 and you'll find o shea played a vast amount more as ole was a sub a lot. So where am I making things up.
91 prem goals over 9 seasons is very average for a striker.
I think you will find below Average as a striker for an epl winning side.
He was not brilliant at anything he was an average squad player. His game time will tell you that.

Just any chance to take a swipe at Ole. This fan base is really toxic. Ole stayed with the club for many years and was a great option from the bench. Without him we wouldn't have the treble mind you ( Fa cup vs Liverpool and of course the champions league) . 91 premier league goals that too not as a guarenteed starter is very good. You can judge him for his management but stop disrespecting him as a player and his loyalty to us by saying he wasn't ambitious.

15.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 09:41:54
I always thought the best way to gauge a striker was goals per minute ratio and I could be wrong but thought ole was second on this list after Michael owen. I may have remembered this wrong and surely someone will let me know if I am but ole always was good for a goal as I recall.

16.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 11:16:38
So Steve10, what you are saying is that all other members of the 99 squad might as well have not played since Ole won it all for us. I never realized that. Ole was nothing more than a decent striker who was happy on the bench. Chicharito could and would have bettered Ole's record if he had stayed longer but he had ambitions and wanted to be a starter.

Ken, you serious? 91 goals in 9 seasons? Hardly a record to be banging about. 10 goals a season average for a striker. Its probably that 91st goal that he will always be remembered by🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

17.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 06:24:07
Ed014, respect your opinion. He might not be a fearful striker but as GDS2 says some of his finishing is top class and you need players like him who you can rely on to score a goal when you need one.

{Ed014's Note - plenty of players on the fringe of teams have made world classes finishes but it doesn’t make them legends or close to it.

18.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 12:49:00
Maybe not Ed, but that last minute goal to win the Champions League, and an historic treble, as well as giving many Utd fans one of their greatest ever moments in football, warrants a bit more kudos than a bang average fringe player imo. You could throw in his goal against Liverpool that season as well.

Anybody who thinks Solskjaer wasn’t a good player for us has no idea what they’re talking about. His stats might not be all that impressive on paper, but he was worth his weight in gold on the pitch and was one of the most clinical finishers we’ve ever had. Besides, his minutes per goal ratio is only slightly behind Shearer and when his 37 assists are included (another big part of his game), he managed a pretty respectable 0.83 goals and assists per 90 minutes in the league. Rooney, our record goal scorer, clocked in at 0.8.

{Ed0666's Note - OGS was a baller as an impact sub no doubt. He has every right to be hailed as one.

20.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 14:50:21
As mentioned previously Ken towards the end of his career he had injuries and when he came back he played a lot of games on the right, as you mentioned he put some great balls in and created. So now you’re ignoring that yo suggest 91 goals over 10 seasons. 3 of them seasons towards the end of his career he hardly played and when he came back he played on the right. Don’t let facts get in the way of your disrespect though.

21.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 15:31:47
GDS2, are we allowed to have different opinions buddy? I mean who you think is good and who Ken or I think are good is a very subjective thing. For you, playing on right left or centre is defining while for me personally, sitting on the bench throughout ones career is defining. RvN played a lot less games for us than Ole i believe but scored more than him?

22.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 16:02:56
All makes you wonder why the greatest manager ever was happy to sell him and usually didn't start him.
Good player. Not a great one.
A good impact sub. Anderson scored his pen in cl final shoot out but he was still bang average not sure a fleeting moment in a 10 year career is worth any great kudos. Ole did well here as a squad player. No disgrace in that butt, o shea nani and many more all made good contributions.
Nobody said he was poor or awful he is average imo averaged 10 goals a season in a team that won 6 titles over that period so he was not world class.

23.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 16:14:52
In his first 6 seasons he scored 75 goals in 163 appearances, many of them as substitute. I don’t think he’s a legend, the winning goal doesn’t elevate him that high, but he was a very very good finisher and an outstanding squad player.

However, for someone who could find the net, he did seem happy to be a squad player. There were some good players ahead of him and he never agitated for a move. Does that tell us anything about him? I genuinely don’t know but it was to our benefit.

24.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 16:15:55
United Addict. RVN was top top class and first choice, Ole was a squad player who had a huge impact from the bench. To compare the 2 of them is laughable.

25.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 16:09:46
average results from an average player. Its simple. We have had dozens of average players doesn't mean they weren't any good but as gds2 suggested above that ole was one of the best its something I can't agree with. I don't think he was in our top 5.
Of the 4 strikers that where in the squad ole played the least of the 4. So its sir Alex maybe that's needs the convincing nit me gds2. He knew a thing or 2 he felt ole warranted less time than Teddy Cole or Yorke. i'm not alone in my opinion.
I've better things to be doing than watching old goals from 20 years ago thankfully. I'll maybe resort to that sort of thing in my 80s when I can't remember my own name anymore.

26.) 11 Jun 2021
11 Jun 2021 16:14:10
Disrespect gds2? I wouldn't cross the road to say hello to him or 95% of our past players. Once your gone your gone I've no interest in 95% of our ex players all they are are men who used play for my fav team. They don't deserve any extra respect because they one played football.

Tony, isn't that the argument to start with? Ole was a squad player at best. that's all i am saying. Compared him with RvN to showcase the gulf in class. You reinforced my point, thank you😀.

Ajh fully agree it was to our benefit that he stayed as long as he did. United were the top club at the time its never easy to leave. Some did and went on to do well and shine elsewhere. Good player for us ole and like butt oshea Phil neville brown and countless others he played his part. He did get the winning goal in the cl final i reader him scoring 4 in about 18 mins as a sub v forest (i think) nobody is denying he had some good moments but never was 1st choice for a sustained period in 10 years. He was happy with that. He pocked up medals and made his mark. Whole lot better at football than 🤣 but not a better player than Teddy yorke Cole hughes Rooney RVN rvp mcclair lukaku ibra teves to name just a few.
Some will remember him more fondly than some of those above and went not? We all have our favourites gds2 thinks he is one of our best ever finishers and well entitled to that opinion i beg to differ.
Out of those i'd most liken him to mcclair. Good team-mate i'd say good lad for a manager to have in his squad. Reliable to do a job when called and content to play a subs role. The quintesential definition of a squad player you could say.
I was in the noucamp in 99 like many others it was a pinch yourself moment for sure but that's all it was a moment. A great one for the memory bank right man in the right place at the right time. Many other would not have scored that goal. But he did and nobody can ever take it away from him. I remember a guy who played a similar role at Liverpool in late 70s and 80s David fairclough he was the original goal scoring sub and seemed happy to be just that.
