Eric Bailly out for 3-4 weeks with muscle injury confirmed . Feel sorry for the lad but its a business and might be wise to think about cashing in if he can't stay fit, obviously more to it than plain bad luck he might just be one of those injury prone players his whole career.

1.) 21 Oct 2020 08:42:09
I said this over the summer, while I think Bailly is one of our better centre backs, the lad just can't stay fit.

2.) 21 Oct 2020 09:28:21
I don’t even think he’s that good. Bailly, Rojo and Jones all need to be shipped out and replaced. Promote Tuanzebe and one other, and buy another CB.

Tuanzebe last night was incredible. Now if he can stay fit!

3.) 21 Oct 2020 10:04:59
If Tuanzebe can stay fit then he can become a great option for us. Mengi also looks a super talent. Add that to Maguire and Lindelof (who aren't half as bad as most people seem to think) . Then we have some decent players to work with, if we play three at the back then Shaw looks well suited to the LCB role, maybe look to bring in another left footed CB to complete with him and add some balance to our defensive options.

4.) 21 Oct 2020 12:07:50
I’m with you Eric, I don’t see what Bailly has to offer us. It probably says more about the quality of our other CBs that Bailly is highly thought of.

5.) 21 Oct 2020 15:55:17
Really like Tuanzebe. But most importantly, we looked much more in control and focused. Lindelof looks much more assured when not playing with Maguire.

Maguire's positional sense is a nightmare which gives those around him more work to do. But when lindelof plays with a more competent centre half, like Tuanzebe last night, it just seems to work better.

But I'm sure Maguire will walk back in unfortunately.

And shappy, mengi, he is the one. Honestly, really excited to see him when he makes the step up. We shouldn't need to buy another CB with him around.

6.) 21 Oct 2020 17:12:13
Angel, Mengi looks potentially like a top level talent. However, that jump from academy to professional football is vast, and many highly talented players have fallen by the wayside.

To be honest if looking at our central options when playing with three at the back we have Lindelof, Maguire and Shaw as first choice and I think they work well together. Tuanzebe and Mengi coming through to challenge those in the first 11. What we really need is another left footed (or at least left sided) centre back to challenge Shaw.

When playing three at the back the RCB and the LCB need to be comfortable moving wider into areas more traditionally covered by the full back. Which is why ideally you want a left footed LCB.

There are some very good options out there who could be available. David Alaba, if he can't sort out a new deal with Bayern would excel in the role. While players like Pau Torres, Zagadou, Bastoni, Badiashile and Ndicka could all offer solid options as well, all being left footed.

While Mengi has played on the left of the centre back partnership and at LB on occasion, so while being right footed he could easily enough cover there.

7.) 21 Oct 2020 17:51:14
I'm still not convinced with Lindelof angel.
He has not improved over time.
He still gets bullied and struggles in one vs one situations.

I'd like us to go for a top class CB like Giminez or Upamecano, to compete with Maguire, Lindelof and Tuanzebe.

8.) 21 Oct 2020 23:37:53

You say unfortunately our captain will walk straight back in but I thought he had a very good game against Newcastle, he won absolutely everything and looked so assured after he got his goal.

9.) 22 Oct 2020 09:40:11
I think a back three with quick players either side of Maguire suits him. It allows him to step forward into midfield with the ball with adequate protection either side of him.

While I think Lindelof has better defensive instincts than Maguire, Harry is far more physical and certainly stronger in the air.

While we played excellently against PSG one thing I did note was PSG never tried the aerial route. Which suited us as Shaw and Lindelof are okay at best in the air and Tuanzebe is untested at the highest level.

In the EPL Maguire might be the better option. In Europe Lindelof might be the better option.

10.) 22 Oct 2020 12:33:46
I don’t get this obsession with needing a left footed CB. Especially as most wingers are now inverted and cut inside, moving on to the defenders right foot. It seems mythical to me.

11.) 22 Oct 2020 23:41:45
Wazza, it's about balance and shape. I would agree in a back four a left footed CB is less important. However, when you play a back three the LCB will have to move out to cover the LB area of the pitch. Which is why being left footed in that situation is preferable.

While the current fashion for higher pressing means that centre backs need to play passes quicker while maintaining accuracy. If you are right footed playing on the left, your options for a quick pass are limited to those players playing on your left, either LB or LW. Whereas a left footed player has a wider area of the pitch to play passes quickly.

If you're right footed and you are pressed then you will have to turn so your left hand side is shielding the ball. If you do that on the left hand side of the pitch you are turning inward towards your goal and then your passing option is limited to your CB partner or maybe a longer more dangerous pass across your box to your RB. If they are marked then you are screwed.

The advantage of a right footed player on the right and a left footed player on the left. Is that the players can play passes more quickly off their stronger foot. While if they are pressed they will naturally, instinctively turn their body in such a way that they will play away from goal and away from the danger area.

That is why Pep has signed Lapotre and Ake, while Arteta has signed Gabriel, David Luis and Pablo Mari.

Tactical managers looking for the best "ideal" solution. It is why left footed CB's are highly prized.

It's why Bayern Munich paid €80m for Lucas Hernandez. While they also play Alaba at LCB often if Hernandez isn't available.

While it's perfectly possible to play a right footed player on the left, you statically get better results from playing a left footer.

12.) 23 Oct 2020 13:24:59
The players you list don't exactly pour glory over your argument Shappy. With the exception of Laporte, of course, but the rule of averages says one of them will be good.

Look where it got LVG, he's history and we've ended up with Rojo.

Think where we'd be if had just signed Koulibaly or Varane rather than try to over complicate things.

I can't remember any time in following football where a CB pairing has been successfully because one of the pair is left footed, and that's when wingers were proper wingers. In fact most to the best pairings have both been right footed.

It's a load of old bolloxolgy if you ask me.

13.) 23 Oct 2020 15:54:18
GDS, not convinced he deserves the spot to be honest given how he has been playing. And it's unfortunate that he will walk straight back into the team.

14.) 23 Oct 2020 15:54:52
TRD, I'm still much more convinced by Lindelof than I am Maguire.

15.) 24 Oct 2020 00:52:16
We’ve got a LCB. His name is Rojo. Argentina international. Didn’t work out. Injured a lot. Very rash. To be fair he would have been decent in a back 3 a few years back. Never really tried it.

16.) 24 Oct 2020 02:12:36

He played there for the under 23s tonight who played a 3-4-3 formation. Williams played right wing back and Pellestri also played. A last minute penalty winner in a 2-1 win, impressive performance considering how young this team is.

17.) 24 Oct 2020 08:05:11
Is Rojo even in the Premier league squad?

{Ed047's Note - yes but not the Champions league squad

05 Oct 2020 13:50:52
Anyone know if Mike Smalling can play the piano? Fully expecting him to be unveiled at 7pm tonight in a fog of dry ice "like a new signing" a la stars in their eyes.

1.) 05 Oct 2020 14:29:25
Isn't that the standard line they trott when someone comes back from a long-term injury, it like a new signing, and we still want more for Mike than we just paid for Telles.

19 Aug 2020 16:46:53
Dont know if anyone listened to the Manchester is Red podcast today -I listen via MEN as I live outside UK . Samuel Luckhurst was very pessimistic about signings -he thought maximum of 2 -I don't know how highly he is regarded in UK - Ed W. came in for a bit of stick again for his "one deal at a time" strategy for incomings and out goings - as mentioned today "transfer window is 10 weeks .3 weeks gone already and seems to be all in for Sancho" Brooks at Bournemouth is someone Ole is keen on.

1.) 19 Aug 2020 18:05:07
As per most summer windows a player will suddenly come out of nowhere that we sign when everyone is looking at a different player and then it will be totally forgotten and talked about that we only do one deal at a time. So I’d imagine we might sign 1 or 2 players that haven’t been mentioned as well as a major signing.

08 Oct 2018 17:31:22
Big worry if Dave the Save is now reluctant to sign a new contract as is widely reported - can only think PSG would be viable destination today.

1.) 08 Oct 2018 17:54:35
Real Madrid could still be a serious option. Navas isn't getting any younger and Coutois hasn't been great since the move. They could easily go back in for DDG either on a free or below his true worth when he only has a year left on his contact.

2.) 09 Oct 2018 08:42:24
Why would DDG sign a new contract?
We don't know where we are going.

He will be a huge loss if he leaves. But the way things are, I don't see any top player staying if given a chance to leave!

3.) 09 Oct 2018 09:45:13
Don’t see where DDG goes, Real are ok, Barcelona too, maybe Bayern or PSG but less competitive leagues, anywhere else even if we aren’t on top atm is a backward step.

4.) 09 Oct 2018 10:34:36
If he left who could blame him?
Probably the best keeper in world football for about 6 seasons now and what’s he got to show for it
If he’d got his move to Real Madrid he’d have a couple of CL winners medals in his back pocket . The way things look for us it’s hard to see us seriously challenging for league or CL for a couple of seasons at the very least.

5.) 09 Oct 2018 14:54:01
Juventus have Szczesny in goal. I appreciate he misses Spain, but that screams out at me.

Ultimately he has been a great player for us, not one of our fans should have any hard feelings if he leaves. He signed for a great club, he now plays for a club I barely recognise.

Wouldn't mind a little swapsy with Athletico for Oblak.

6.) 10 Oct 2018 19:41:05
As I understand it the contract is almost done, but he wants a clause that states he won't ever be used as a center back.

04 Aug 2018 20:56:27
Several reports saying TFM going out on loan to Hertha Berlin.

1.) 04 Aug 2018 21:28:55
Would be a shame as would have like to have seen him get more minutes. Especially with Valencia out and Dalot an unknown quantity. Hope this doesn’t mean darmian won’t be moved on. Guess we will have to wait and see how this pans out.

2.) 04 Aug 2018 22:11:30
Surely means a Darmian is staying now. The Italian international could be a revelation in a 3-5-2, or indeed at right back used properly.

{Ed002's Note - No.}

3.) 04 Aug 2018 22:24:11
Intersting Ed. Darmian def leaving then.

Very, very busy time coming up with ins and outs.

4.) 05 Aug 2018 04:08:03
Tfm will benefit from that i hope he plays in his more natural position. Periera looks a better player following n his ex perience should have sent martial on loan last season we could have got back a much more rounded player.

5.) 05 Aug 2018 07:40:55
With darmian likely leaving and dalot and valencia injured i'm guessing we'll have to play tuanzebe lindeloff at right back?

6.) 05 Aug 2018 07:41:40
Darmian will go to Italy so there is still plenty of time to shift him out as the deadline only changed in the prem.

We may use him the first couple of games whilst we wait on Valencia and Dalot and then sell him.

7.) 05 Aug 2018 07:59:40
If a LB is signed, then we may even see Young shifted to the right with Shaw and the new LB on the left. Final few days may be exciting and nerve wrecking. Checking the sites every 15-20 mins.

8.) 05 Aug 2018 09:22:37
We have Valencia and Dalot, Jones, Bailly, Lindelof, new signing, Shaw and Young, enough to cover any formation without Darmian. Presuming Smalling and Rojo leave that is aswell.

9.) 05 Aug 2018 15:39:02
Personally I’d keep Smalling and sell rojo and add Toby. Job done at centre half.

Still think we need a real left back more than a right forward if we are to make another purchase.

If Pogba leaves we will most definitely need to replace him too.

Luke Shaws post match interview really tells its own story of the squad. its the same speech made at least 9 times under the 3rd consecutive manager by my reckoning which must sound alarm bells for RR and any future manager

. basically "we weren't up for it, we didn't play as a team, we couldn't get started today, no intensity no energy "

Mata, Maguire, McTominay and Matic have all made the same speech virtually word for word several times each in recent seasons.

Absolutely frightening if these players are the future of the club.

1.) 04 Jan 2022 08:51:24
I think a few players need to be sold. Get rid of those who don't try etc. The players have far too much of a say. They clearly aren't trying. One positive was Jones last night. After such a long time out, he played well, played with more desire than most of the team.

2.) 04 Jan 2022 08:54:05
RR needs to get rid of anyone with the wrong attitude. Needs to be given to power and trust to do so.

3.) 04 Jan 2022 09:27:15
No one epitomises it more than nice guy Rashford. We all know what a strikers job is and we all know what Rashfords capable of producing and he gets a lot of love from the fans . Ole got stick (quite rightly and plenty from me) for not been able to coach or have any tactical nous.

Now in comes a new manager and Rashford still isn't running, still isn't tracking back, still can't make a 5mtr pass and still looks half arsed . so who exactly is to blame if not the player himself. and he is just one of 5-6 we can all name for being exactly the same.

4.) 04 Jan 2022 09:41:08
players like shaw are the reason the team is so poor.

no work rate, no one running, putting in a shift. then waffle garbage in interviews, they can't even pass a ball 5 yards its embarasing

both full backs are woefull wan bissaka and shaw should be sold, shaw has had 1 good season in about 8 years then has the balls to talk S in his interview. wan bissaka offers 0 going forward, i have never seen a poorer full back, all he has is a tackle, he is poor in possession, poor positional play and he wonders why he doesn't make the england team.

bruno is starting to annoy me, throwing his hands up when we conceded, why don't you sprint back and put a shift in and they might not have got the shot away.

RR and who ever follows has a massive job, the players are lazy.

agree with jones thought he was great, did his job clearing the cross, just a shame the players infront who were to lazy to close the ball down quick enough.

like you don't know players like moutiniho and neves will look to shoot from the edge of the box, just basics we don't do.

cant stand watching us atm.

theres more passion in sunday league.

5.) 04 Jan 2022 09:18:40
The thing with player attitudes is that how they act individually and in a group can be very different.

It takes a strong personality to not conform to the group mentality.

If there are key members of the group who struggle to bring the right mentality to every game and every training session then they can impact the rest of the group.

Most players are followers, few are leaders. If we get rid of those players who bring the collective attitude in the group down and replace them with a few who have an infectious personality and work rate then they will drag most of the rest of the players with them.

We have seen this before with Cantona. How in that case just one player came in and raised the standards and expectations of those around him. Same with Keane. I'm not saying we need a bully in the dressing room who scares everyone into line. We just need a few more players who always demand the most from themselves AND their teammates.

I don't think every player needs to be chucked out, just those who being the attitude of the others down. Whoever they turn out to be.

Attitude and mentality can be changed, but it isn't a quick process. Ralf has brought in a sports psychologist to address that, but it will take months to see any real impact.

Ralf needs to be given the ability to move on any and every player without the right attitude, regardless of whether that player is Ronaldo, Bruno, DDG, Rashford or anyone.

Being a good player isn't enough for a top side, you need great players with great attitudes and strong mentalities.

6.) 04 Jan 2022 09:20:05
I slated jones before the game so I’ll hold my hands up and say well done to him. However the fact he was our best player is a worry in itself lol.

7.) 04 Jan 2022 10:23:02
Jones - on paper - is still our best defender -
Him and Varane would be handy.

Just a shame Jones is made out of paper.

8.) 04 Jan 2022 10:39:17
shappy its the basics of doing your job, we shouldn't need a few players to come in and show these lazy B what working hard should be.

it a joke tho that this is what's prob needed because we are so lazy its unreal. you can have all the quality in the world but it mean naff all if the work rate isn't there.

but i am all for getting rid of these jokers for people that actually want to work, regardless of who leaves.

9.) 04 Jan 2022 10:53:39
Agree with a lot of that Shappy (Happy New year to you) but I also think after 15 minutes last night Wolves players would have thought wow Neves and Moutinho are really on it tonight, our wing backs are looking good and we look a threat - I can't imagine many United players thought the same about our team.

Wolves played with a confidence in each other, they don't necessarily have a leader or a dominant personality really but they have a belief that if they all get stuck in and give 100% in their roles they can get rewards.

Total opposite to our lot.

10.) 04 Jan 2022 12:10:19
Bolger, it's simple group dynamics. If you go into a workplace that is lazy, where people don't do their job properly and there are no consequences for a lack of effort then soon enough you'll find yourself not working as hard.

You don't need a wholesale clear out, just move on those who are instigating the malaise and bring in role models who drag the rest up with them.

11.) 04 Jan 2022 12:18:45
Who is Shaw referring to then do we think here? Who are the bad apples?

12.) 04 Jan 2022 13:13:36
Hes one of them eric, he plays like a sunday league player, head down and punting balls into the box with no real target. Whines like a spoilt little girl as well.

13.) 04 Jan 2022 13:32:39
The absolute cheek of Shaw, who does he think is! He epitomises our attitude! Half arsed attitude! That photo doing the rounds today of the body language on way out of tunnel for kick off is one of worst most depressing things I’ve ever seen, disgrace the lot of them! Cowards!

13 Dec 2021 12:59:35
Offically re doing whole draw again at 3pm - had to happen.

Maybe i'm biased but a couple of Chistmases ago my old mum who wears black woollen MUFC gloves in winter was at her social club Xmas raffle won box of maltesers - part of the 25 p raffle - issue was Mum had bought a one pound ticket top prize massive tin foxs chocolate biscuit selection and her ticket went in wrong draw. no do overs. I like a malteser but still . couldn't walk down Tesco biscuit aisle for months afterwards.

1.) 13 Dec 2021 13:11:40
Can’t believe UEFA finally got caught rigging the draw. I’m sure they’ll still find a way to pair us with PSG in the redraw though.

The prospect of Ronaldo vs Messi is worth far too much for the corrupt so and sos, and with no guarantee that both sides will make it through to the next round, I really can’t see them leaving it up to chance even with all eyes on the redraw.

2.) 13 Dec 2021 16:55:02
It wasn't rigged, they just messed up because of the system. If they were trying to make sure we got PSG they wouldn't have accidentally gives us Villarreal!

26 Nov 2021 10:27:54
Looking at Rangnicks comments from 2019 on how Utds recruitment has been poor since SAF retired and that you need at least 50% of your purchases to be a success and receive top quality coaching once bought are we below 50% sucesss rate?

just pulling 22 names out of recent memory and by no means a full list of recent buys, are more than 11 of them successes? i'd say no.

Fellani - Mata -Lukaku -Di Maria -Dalot- Damian - Blind -Matic -Fred -Pogba- Sanchez-Shaw -Maguire- Bailly -lidelof-AWB -James -Schnierlin-Sweinstieger-Martial -Depay -Cavani

On a positive note in 6 months purely from a wages point of view a new manager will likely have Lingard, Mata, matic, Pogba, Bailly (lindelof) Dalot, Martial, cavani, Pereria and possibly Henderson gone which financially if nothing else clears space again for at least 3 decent signings.

1.) 26 Nov 2021 11:01:40
I think there is some cracking talent in the Academy that needs its pathway cleared first and some of those names you have mentioned should do that.

Hannibal Mejbri is the one I am expecting to break into the side before the end of 2022.

2.) 26 Nov 2021 11:19:55
Absolutely spot on Caolan. i have been praising Mejbri for some time now. It's about time he got a chance in that midfield area.
Lets face it Matic, Fred and Mctominay have been sh&t for sometime now. Why not throw him in and see what he can do.

3.) 26 Nov 2021 11:37:36
from what I've seen of Mejbri in the reserves, Ralph will love his style of play and energy.

4.) 26 Nov 2021 11:44:24
For sure, Rangnick talks about there being nothing greater than developing young players - Elanga looks ready to me, Diallo was to go on loan but he definately has that spark that fans love - Mejbri and the centre half who went to Derby and came back. was it Tengi? highly regarded defender.

5.) 26 Nov 2021 12:02:38
Teden Mengi is the one. He needs to get out on loan in Jan into the championship.

Another one to keep an eye on which might be a surprise is Svidersky. High energy and puts the foot in.

6.) 26 Nov 2021 12:03:30
Mejbri looks like a United player. Even in his brief cameo against Wolves last season he put his foot on the ball, looked to play forward and get forward himself.

Big talent there.

7.) 26 Nov 2021 12:50:33
Mengi - that's the lad Caolan -thanks. Apparently very well thought of at UTD.

8.) 26 Nov 2021 14:40:36
I hope we see the younguns come through and shine. As mentioned, mejbril, mengi, elanga etc but a kid I would like to see nurtured and given a chance, eventually is Hughill.
All in all it indicates that we are looking to change the structure as well as the the, hopefully, style of recent play. Time will tell but if he wants more dynamic full backs/ wing backs i hope we have a punt on aarons in Jan and he drops the underperformers.

9.) 26 Nov 2021 17:06:26
Hannibal's biggest issue is his temper. If he can manage that he will be quite a player.

25 Nov 2021 17:12:14
Wow, on paper a great decision.

5 of the top 6 teams in Germany today have coaches who learned under him. Tuchel and Klopp revere him.

His soundbites are exciting "you need a definite style of play to win games"

'coaching is everything"

"i enjoy improving players, finding players with potential, young players and watching them grow into great players"

If he can conquer the egos in the dressing room, sidestep and politics at board level then we might just have made a real proper football decision for the first time in years.

1.) 25 Nov 2021 19:06:20
And he's already identified our terrible transfer policy. I think he has been promised a DOF role which us why we should all be extremely excited.

23 Nov 2021 09:44:56
Theres clutching at straws and then there's clutching at straws. just read some internet blogger "journo" saying UTD will call on Ralf Rangnick
before next month when he has 10 week winter break from Lokomotiv to come and help out our backroom staff at United with coaching for 7-8 weeks.

You know, just like you do when your mates on furlough from Barratt homes and you need a garden wall building.

Im not saying Bissouma or Neves would be in that price bracket -although last transfer window it was reported Brighton would have been looking for 40 mill for Bissouma when he was linked with Arsenal and Livepool.

But Zakaria, Kessie, Kamara and just about every player RR has been linked with in the media as admiring so far if true that I hadnt heard of such as Hardrida, Adams, the CH from Barcelona and the german right sided full back none has a price tag of over 35 mill and if RR is really tracking them and recruitment is his strongpoint then I would trust his judgement and the club should too rather that always buying big name indivuduals with big egos who thingk they've made it once they sign their first contract.

I might be biased because I really love watching Neves- that pass for tehir goal this week - Bissouma is also class act - as mentioned on these pages over the last month, lot of very good players out there 20-40 million that would improve us no end but are possibly not big name or sexy enough for a lot of the fanbase.

Neves is a lot more than better than we have - he is one of the best players in PL and has been for 2-3 years now.

I know this is only one game but my Hammers fan mate told me Neves is the only midfielder opponent that has outplayed Rice this season - I think it was in November and Neves was best player on the pitch in that game. Very underated.

{Ed077's Note - Ruben Neves one of the best players in the PL? Really? I tend to disagree boyfromburrenway..

He isn't even in my top 5 midfielders in the league let alone. But he would be an upgrade on our midfield.

Wouldnt want Dembele as a free gift. i'm guessing Barcelona fans aren't overjoyed about getting Martial either.

Lets just hope there is some kind of clear thinking behind it. Diallo, Pellistri, VDB seem to have been bought in with no clear plan what to do with them.

My only issue with RR so far is that when he arrived he spoke of studying UTDs games on video this season. He also said in 2019 we were very unbalanced with the wrong personnel throughout the squad.

Obviously we don't know what's happening at board level but why we weren't spending 15 mill on 1st January on a DM is a shock to me-Its a massive problem for us -we all know this. Kessie/ Zakaria/ Kamara all in that price range due to running down contracts. The difference in 4th or 5th place finish financially is huge - yes a new manager is coming in but any of those 3 players I don't beleive will be a problem for a new manager and once they sign on the dotted line thier re sale value goes up.

I honestly thought RR would have pushed that through he has seen in every game since he arrived how teams just walk through our midfield .2 weeks left so who knows.

Cant agree Bolger. a top DM shielding our back 4 would be a huge improvement- a kante / ndidi winning the ball or going to the ball 15 yards further up the pitch and laying it off simply for us to start an attack . its what we are crying out for. Rice and Soucek at WHU have got it down to a fine art this season.

Ive got no problem on him not being a name at all -same as I think now would be a great time for RR to show his supposed acumen in the transfer market in buying the right players for the right positions who he can develop into top level players.

My issue with Potter is i'm old enough to remember the clamour for Curbishley, Steve Clarke, Hoddle, Howe, Martinez, Keane, Coppell to be given jobs in top 6 sides and none of them ever did anything apart from Hoddle who had limited success and who hardly set the world alight at club level.

Would Potter be able to make the step up. good shout for the Everton job first maybe?

i would go for 2 -3 players rather than the one, Rice is excellent but we could have success with 2-3 astute signings.

I don't think Rice will go for 100+ million. He isn't signing a new contract at WHU, the Telegraph reporter did a piece in the summer saying Rice has openly told colleagues on England duty he would leave. I beleive he will have around 16 months left on his contract in the summer, I think WHU have overplayed it a bit, only needs Rice to say I only want to go to Chelsea ( was one rumour) and his value significantly reduces.

Chelsea, City, Lpool all far better options for Rice -if you were close to him would you advise him to join our circus?
