I thought the Bakayoko rumour was nonsense, but last night he tweeted an article saying he was coming to united with the words "Oui ca" (yes it is) . But then deleted the tweet within two mins. I'm not one to pay much attention to twitter transfer chat, but this seems slightly more interesting than usual.

would be the best signing of the summer but I think they learnt lesson with RVP.

2.) 12 Jul 2017 16:13:02
Sorry, I'm talking about the Sanchez frenzy not Bakayoko.

I'm wondering: given our need for a wide attacking player, why we aren't going in for Sanchez? His work rate is fantastic, so that wouldn't be a complaint for Mourino, and he could make the difference in winning the league. He often played on the right for Barcelona, so could fit in there as well as the left, or as cover up front. He's premier league tested, unlike Perisic. Personally I think he's one of the best in Prem right now. And his link up with Pogba, Miki, and Lukaku would be excellent.

The price being touted in the papers is 80mil for a switch to man city. Obv that means very little. And I'm sure Wenger would much rather sell him to a different league. But I'm just wondering why we haven't seemed to show much interest? Is it an issue with Arsenal not wanting to do business with us? Or something else?

If any of the eds (or anyone else) could comment I'd love to know what you think.

{Ed002's Note - Sabchez is clearly a very good player but in building a team JM has always built a squad with players who are required to perform very specific tasks. He will pick players to do these tasks and will return to players he has had before as they know exactly what to do. Even if these are lesser known players like Maniche who is a great example. There are plenty of other examples as well. So even though there are very good players out there - Sanchexz may not be what is needed.}

1.) 09 Jul 2017 08:28:20
Maniche ain't coming out of retirement is he. 😂😂.

2.) 09 Jul 2017 05:50:47
Thanks Ed. Your analysis is much appreciated!

3.) 09 Jul 2017 06:24:23
Thanks. ed002, explains a lot about Mourinhos thinking.

4.) 09 Jul 2017 10:22:37
I had a strong feeling that if Jose was genuinely suggesting a surprise, that it was Sanchez. I don't know why, and wasn't based on anything other than a feeling. To be fair, by feeling I probably mean wishful thinking.

Telegraph reporting we are unlikely to get Peresic as Milan confident they can avoid Uefa financial sanctions without having to sell him. I was interested in the Eds take on this.

Hi Eds,

There has been a lots of chat in the papers regarding interest in Mahrez. Is there any truth to this? And if so any chance of him joining in January?

Thanks in advance.

Wisco

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach to his club by MU.}

1.) 03 Nov 2015 17:28:22
Thanks.

Hi Edds,

Lots of rumors going round regarding a bid for Muller. Any news on interest etc?

Thanks in advance!

Wisco

{Ed004's Note - There is interest but there is about a 1% chance Bayern would sell}

1.) 23 Jul 2015 12:13:44
so there is a chance

2.) 23 Jul 2015 12:36:54
The chance is if HE wants to leave. Bayern would not sell him at any price. Hope Basti phones him :)

3.) 23 Jul 2015 13:20:11
Personally if we are talking to Bayern I hope we talk to them about Lewandowski, it would be madness to miss out on him

4.) 23 Jul 2015 14:12:17
The chance is part of the process.

5.) 23 Jul 2015 14:42:11
As I have said many times

Assuming Ronaldo doesn't sign, do you think any of our potential new signings would be handed the #7 jersey?

Wisco

1.) 23 Jun 2017 06:47:57
No Felliani will be given the #7 jersey next season.

2.) 23 Jun 2017 07:01:24

Could any of the eds explain how city got ahead of us for Otamendi? We're we just unwilling to meet the valuation? Thanks in advance!

Wisco

{Ed001's Note - they were looking for the buyer to pay the buyout clause + taxes, United simply were not willing to match that valuation and kept looking to get the fee down. City were willing to meet the fee.}

1.) 19 Aug 2015 15:11:47
I don't think that the costs involved for getting Otamendi stack up for me. It is not value for money for someone who is 27/28 and although is a good player is unproven in the PL. I would rather pay £35M for Stones and although that is overpriced you can get value due to the fact that he is much younger and is playing in the PL.
Stones has the potential to be another Rio

2.) 19 Aug 2015 14:53:30
ED01 how much would be the outlay for City in the Otamendi deal?

I read we were quoted a price of 28.5 million pounds.

{Ed001's Note - his buyout clause was 50m Euros, so that plus the taxes on it. Though it will not be an immediate outlay as they are agreeing deals to pay over as long a term as possible to reduce FFP impact.}

3.) 19 Aug 2015 15:17:36
There is a centre half in Scotland Virgil Van Dijk, he is the real deal and at a quoted price of £10 million would be an absolute steal.

I would have him over Stones and Otamendi at that price. He will end up signing for someone like Everton and in 2 years time they will sell him for £30 million.

Ed007 what do you reckon?

{Ed007's Note - Van Dijk's a cracking player but he needs to prove himself on a bigger stage before Man Utd see him as anything more than a squad player unless the loss of supposed targets like Ramos or Otamendi has pushed him further up the pecking order.
Southampton have been long time admirers of van Dijk and Everton see him as a possible replacement for Stones, Newcastle were rumoured to also have an interest because of McClaren's time spent in Holland but Celtic are hoping that qualifying for the CL will persuade the big Dutchman to stay in Glasgow until at least January.}

4.) 19 Aug 2015 16:37:01
Best of luck for tonight bond. Hopefully see you on the other side.

5.) 19 Aug 2015 15:53:45
Ed001, will part of this be offset against what City are still owed for Negredo? Do clubs work like that when possible?

{Ed001's Note - yes and yes. Another one of those was the signing of Glenn Johnson by Liverpool, as Portsmouth owed Liverpool a lot of money, so that was knocked off the price.}

6.) 19 Aug 2015 16:40:21
I think the qualification will either convince him to stay or push up his price so it's win win. The people who run Celtic are extremely astute.

I understand you saying he may need to prove himself on a bigger stage. I've watched a serious amount of him, a lot of my good friends are celtic fans and I haven't heard them rave about a player like this since the days of larsson and Co, I think he would be tremendous for us, much better than jones/evans and I would much rather spend on him, throw him in, instead of signing a 30-40million defender. Van Dijk in 2 years will be worth that.

Everyone saying we won't be going for Morata now, but we do need to replace both Ibra and Rooney. And we need a wide player, which Morata can do (although a specialist would be much better) . Big Lukaku is a good signing, but do you really think he can fill the boots of 9 and 10?

Also, I can see Conte preferring Belotti over Morata. Fits Chelsea better.

Everyone is saying either "Peresic and Young are nothing alike" or "Beast is right they are totally alike", but no one has discussed their attributes other than saying they are left wingers who work hard and are defensively minded. To be honest, I haven't seen Peresic enough to know how similar/ different they are. But this debate would be way more productive if people backed up what they were saying with some evidence or analysis of the players (beyond the really obvious stuff we already know) .

I'm personally more interested in how players fit into an overall system, and how they will benefit the team as a whole, rather than chasing after shiny marquee signings. But as I say, I really haven't seen enough of Peresic to have a good take on that.

The clear evidence that EW messed up was the inability to get the Peresic deal done early. As Ed002 pointed out many times, Peresic was available for a cut price IF the deal was done early so Inter could avoid financial sanctions. We didn't move fast enough, and Inter were able to sort it out via other strategies, meaning they were able to start playing hardball in negotiations with us. We know teams want to try and squeeze us for extra cash, so surely we should try to leverage a situation when we have an advantage. From a strategic perspective, Peresic surely should have been the first order of business and the failure to target him early lies with EW. Given the prices being quoted now, that error could cost us £20-30 million.

Really interesting point Caolan. Unfortunately I agree that this would prob lead to a super league, which I think would be terrible for the sport.

The other factor in NFL that is interesting is that the team that performs the worst in the previous season gets first pick in the draft. 2nd worst gets 2nd pick etc. While this would be impossible to implement given the way our youth systems works (and for many other reasons), it does make American football far more interesting as teams that perform poorly for a couple of years can bounce back and win the Super Bowl shortly after. This means that it is less likely that one or two teams can dominate a league for a long time. Or if they do, it's because of the strategic genius of the general manager (like the Patriots recently) or the genius of a few key players (like Aaron Rodgers for the Packers) .

There are definitely some lessons in American football (like the wage cap for teams) that could be learned by our governing bodies.

Although obviously with only a limited number of teams all in one country, implementing tough rules and regulations is so much easier. The coordination problems for us are close to insurmountable.

With respect KG, some of your points are a little out:

1) Playing 5 at the back against LA was to experiment with a new system and get players used to the formation and tactics so that it can potentially be deployed during the season. Not because we were scared of Galaxy.

2) On not having a plan, how can you possibly know what Jose's plan is for this season given that we've played one warm up match? It's possible you are right, but we have no way to tell without further information.

3) it seems that we have more of a plan with acquisitions this year. Jose isn't going after big names - he wants players that fit the system he wants to play, hence going after Perisic rather than a bigger name like Sanchez. Or a ball playing CB like Lindelof that no one had heard of before. I would be more worried there was no plan if we were just chasing random big names, and then trying to form a system around them.
