I keep seeing stories in the media that Hernandez is going to leave. If this is the case, surely we must be bringing in another CF?

samthered15

1.) 30 Aug 2015 15:18:32
Ibra deadline day signing

2.) 30 Aug 2015 19:12:10
Not a great fan of Ibra, but let's be honest, he hasn't got much to beat. I've always supported Rooney but once again, he was dire. Would we have lost with Suarez up front?

3.) 30 Aug 2015 21:01:00
Ibra is top class. Wins trophies wherever he goes.

01 Aug 2015 13:46:49
There seems to be a lot of rumours flying around that we are "hours" away from signing Nicolas Gaitan. Does any of the Ed's have any information regarding this? There seems to be multiple sources reporting this.

samthered15

{Ed004's Note - Can't see it happening}

1.) 01 Aug 2015 14:45:22
We've been signing him for like 5 years? He's the budget rumour version of sneijder.

2.) 01 Aug 2015 16:00:11
Anything reported by metro, the Daily star or mark brus is total horse #hit. I love a good rumour but wouldn't believe 99.9% of them!
Keep up the good work Ed's as you're my only reliable source.
By the way my great aunts nans grandfathers elderly hairdresser recently saw Gareth Bale shopping in Primark in Manchester with Mats Hummells. make of that as you will! But I believe it means we will sign Nico Gaitan and Bruno Martins indi!

3.) 01 Aug 2015 17:02:54
Thanks for responding Ed.

Do you think we will sign anyone else before the Spurs game?

{Ed004's Note - Maybe not before the spurs game but I think there will be more signings.}

31 Jul 2015 13:37:55
According to the Barcelona president, no one has approached them about Pedro.

Maybe he isn't a target after all?

samthered15

1.) 31 Jul 2015 15:56:35
As far as I can gather he has a release clause, so if we offer that then they don't have a choice? I would tend to not believe anything that comes out at this point, so difficult to know the truth.

{Ed002's Note - That is not correct.}

2.) 31 Jul 2015 16:24:14
What's not correct the fact that no one has bid or he has a transfer clause

3.) 31 Jul 2015 16:29:14
This is what Ed002 said about clauses not too long ago, hope it helps:
The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax. There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about three years ago. So "bouy out" clauses are very rare.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales). These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. Examples are Goetze who decide he wanted to move and Cavani who, regardless of two offers that were made in 2012 that matched or equated to his then "release clause" recognised Napoli did not want to sell and could block a move abroad and he accepted a new package. Since then Napoli said they will listen to offers of €60M or so and indeed accepted a bid the following summer - which is of course different.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

(not united related)
I was just hearing on sly sports that Liverpool are in for Roberto Firmino and two other South American players. Could it be a case of them spending the Sterling money already?

samthered15

1.) 23 Jun 2015 15:08:05
If Liverpool are getting firminho over us then I reckon lvg either wasn't in for him or pereiras performances in the u20s this summer has made him think twice which is right in my opinion we should be promoting our youth if their good enough instead of paying over the odds for MOTD fever players like Firminho,Anderson

2.) 23 Jun 2015 15:45:59
I agree, nach73. Pereira is a similar player to Firminho and it could be that the manager wants to give Pereira a chance.

Firminho is a top talent though. It would be interesting how Rodgers would use him and Coutinho in the same side.

3.) 23 Jun 2015 15:46:13
I think Firmino will be the real deal. He has had a real rise to the public eye recently and is constantly improving. Regardless I hope Pereira is involved more this coming year, a midfield 3 birth is really helpful for youngsters as the pressure is shared a little more.

4.) 23 Jun 2015 16:16:56
Rodgers probably doesn't have a clue but Firmino represents a relatively big name with an affordable fee that will appease the fans for a bit.

Firmino is best in Coutinho's position. Maybe the plan is Firmino and Sturridge up front when he leaves the medical room.

I know it is a bit early to be talking about the team set up for the game against Everton, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since the final whistle at the Emirates stadium.
For me, we need to set up with three in the middle of the park, or use a 4141 system, and play Young and Valencia on the wings to support the full backs, and put Mata into a nore central attacking midfield role with Herrera and Schneiderlin playing just behind him. I think the way were were exploited down the flanks by Arsenal was a real cause for concern, because Memphis and Mata are never going to give the full backs the cover they need when we come up against the top sides.

I think Everton is a must win game. The teams confidence would have been rocked by the defeat against Arsenal, so it is imperative that we get the result, even if we have to grind one out, hence why I believe we need physical power in the team.

What do you guys think?

samthered15

1.) 12 Oct 2015 16:45:07
Young and Valencia on the wings? If we are resorting to that we might as well give up now. Valencia is a back up right back at best now, he can't take on a man and he can't cross the ball.

I think we will struggle against Everton in all honesty, going to be a tough game, still think we will get max 5 points from this 4 game spell.

2.) 12 Oct 2015 17:00:09
Young is our best winger currently. Memphis needs to be dropped and get his head together. He was dog poor in both international games for Holland. Valencia is a beast physically. He works his socks off and won't leave the fullback stranded. He also played very well for Ecuador on the wing recently. He is more than capable of doing a job.

My preferred system would be the 433, but the manager doesn't seem to want to go back to that system. I hope he does because it is the best formation for the team considering the midfield is our strongest area of the pitch.

What is the point of having a squad of players if their strengths cannot be utilised?
The team needs to beat Everton, which will be a hard task. But because of the manner of their recent defeat, their collective confidence would have been knocked. A defeat to Everton would be a disaster.

3.) 12 Oct 2015 17:01:55
Valencia on the wing would be a disaster. He is a terrible winger and a very very poor right back - I'm not sure why he is at the club still to be honest.

We have to go to a 4-3-3 with Martial, Mata and Young as the front 3. Memphis deserves to be dropped and Rooney does too, also he is usually poor against Everton. Then get Herrera back in the midfield 3 with Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger or Carrick. I'd also suggest Blind moving to left back and get Jones involved - I don't particularly like Jones but he is a little more physical than Blind and did well at the back end of last season.

4.) 12 Oct 2015 18:11:49
I would like to see the see that team, Fresh.

I too don't think Valencia is the player he was, but he still has attributes that will come in useful in certain games.

5.) 12 Oct 2015 18:34:08
"I would like to see that team, Fresh" is what I meant.

:)

6.) 12 Oct 2015 18:43:36
Coleman was fit for the Ireland game and he was the best player on the pitch, he loves to get forward so I can't see depay tracking him back so I would rest him, blind at lb and darmin rb, I hope Valencia doesn't start, he can't cross a ball and can't play a straight line at the back, I would like to see Herrera start this one.

7.) 12 Oct 2015 18:51:48
I think we will see young play left wing Instead of Depay. Shamus Coleman will have a career day if he is not marked busting forward. That would probably mean Darmian to eft back and Valencia to right back or blind to left back and we will see jones and Smalling as cb's.

8.) 12 Oct 2015 19:08:13
GCU, I suspect Everton will try to exploit us like Arsenal did down the flanks, hence why I mentioned Valencia, because for all his lack of ability going forward, he makes up for it with brute force and work rate, which we are going to need against Everton. I wasn't advocating him commanding a regular place; but he is a strong guy and doesn't get bullied off the ball or outrun.
We are going to need someone who is going to fight IMO. There was none of that against Arsenal who ran through us like a hot knife through butter.

9.) 12 Oct 2015 19:55:34
We need to play Herrera and Schneiderlin and inject some energy into the middle. If fit, Rooney will play but he looks like he needs a break. As I said after the Arsenal debacle, how we bounce back will be interesting. I worry LVG doesn't get it

10.) 12 Oct 2015 21:38:34
That is my worry too, AJH. He does have a stubborn nature.

The thing that baffles me is the fact that we had a system of playing towards the end of last season that worked, especially against the top sides. We now have a squad of players who can make that system work better.
I hope he see's sense and reverts back to it.

11.) 13 Oct 2015 06:47:02
Sam

Everton like to push their fullbacks forward an that is why i think Young will play on the left as he will track coleman and keep him honest. His offensive work is also useful as he does provide assists and puts in good balls and a team sort of player.

I am curious to see what the back 4 looks like. LVG likes the blind/smalling partnership so he will not break it up. I am assuming Everton will be looking to get Lukaku Blind match up as much as they can. We mint see dojo at left back and darmian at right back.

I think Baines is still injured so the right hand side is maybe not as potent and I still expect Mata to start there.

05 Oct 2015 13:09:10
Agree with all the posts about the manager getting it wrong tactically.
If anything, he didn't show Arsenal the credit they deserve, hence his team selection. I can imagine him and his coaching staff convincing themselves that Arsenal were going to sit back and hit us on the counter, hence why we went with two ball players in CM.
I suppose the defeat for Arsenal in mid-week clouded their observations of their previous game where they pounded Leicester playing a similar style.

I just hope the manager learns a valuable lesson from yesterdays game: don't be complacent and play to the teams strengths.

Our track record of bouncing back after a major defeat under the current manager has been good, so I hope we can bounce back with a bang against Everton.

samthered15

1.) 05 Oct 2015 13:34:05
Highlighted the problem with Mata wide he offers nothing defensively leaving Darmian pretty much 1 v 1 with someone like Sanchez was asking for trouble. Mata needs to play centrally allowing a better shape to the side. Should be a no brained to drop Rooney for Mata now but LVG won't.

2.) 05 Oct 2015 14:04:35
Darmian and Valencia down the right would be a strong combo. It won't happen though.

Sometimes, we need to choose players to mitigate the oppositions strengths. There is nothing wrong with that IMO.

3.) 05 Oct 2015 20:38:31
IMO Valencia is shocking! Absolutely clueless in the opposition half!

04 Oct 2015 18:02:59
The team has got into a bad habit of starting slow: we started slow against Southampton and went one down; we started slow against Wolfsburg and went one down; and today, we start slow - although we got it horribly wrong tactically - we go two down and get hit by the third because we're chasing the game. We need to get out of this habit fast.

With the midfield players at our disposal, we need to play with three in the middle, like we did towards the end of last season.
Even though Arsenal sat back, we completely dominated the game and they never had the space.

I just hope this is a bit of a wake up call. It isn't a disaster by any stretch of the imagination because we're only a few points off the top; but there needs to be some changes - IMO - with regards to the tactical set-up, especially when we come up against the top sides with quality in the final third.

Once again, Martial looked a threat. Even with a number of defenders around him and not a lot of space in behind to run into, he always looked capable of creating something; and on another day, he might have scored the chance he created for himself at the end of the first half.

Hopefully, all the players come back fit and fighting because the Everton game is now massive for us.

samthered15

{Ed004's Note - I just posted the same thing. We need to start playing 3 in midfield again the top teams}

1.) 04 Oct 2015 18:14:04
I think it is a bit of a no-brainer Ed.

I know it is all what if's, but if I was managing today, I would have started with Felliani, Carrick and Schneiderlin, with Carrick holding and Felliani and Schneiderlin playing in front with a few to shutting off the avenues downs the channels and playing on the counter.

I never quite understood why we moved away from the system that served is so well towards the end of last season.

{Ed004's Note - My only concern with that midfield 3 is how effective Schneiderlin would be in it. I've been very disappointed in his passing recently. Doesn't seen to offer much going forward.}

2.) 04 Oct 2015 19:32:41
It was a game crying out for Carrick and Schneiderlin. We know that arsenal have pace and move the ball quickly. The old guard were not the right pick for this game!

3.) 04 Oct 2015 18:47:10
True Ed, he has been a bit lacking in the passing department; but I think he would have stopped a lot of the problems Sanchez caused us in the early moments of the game; or at the very least, supported Darmian.

Off subject here, but how would you feel about playing Rooney on the left of a front three? I thought he played okay out there in the second half.
I also think we need to bring Felliani back into the side. I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he is a real presence in the midfield area and a handful in the opposition box. The role he played on the left side of CM last season is his best position for me.

Today's game was crying out for midfield steel, and the two CM players that could have given us that steel started on the bench.
I think we need to go back to being strong in the middle of the park and hard to beat. I understand the manager wants to play more expansive, but I just think that with a more combative midfield, we have the quality the in the forward areas to score goals.
The loss of Shaw has brought an imbalance to the defence which was highlighted today, so a strong combative CM, IMO, would help mitigate the defensive frailties.

I am gutted we have to wait to weeks before we play again.

{Ed004's Note - I agree with everything you've said about the midfield. Today we just let them walk through us at ease without putting them under any pressure. The game was screaming out for probably both Schneiderlin and Fellaini but hindsight is wonderful. If Rooney can't be dropped then out next best option atm is to put him out wide left. I thought after first 10 mins LvG should have had Rooney marking Cazorla as he has done jobs like that in the past would have atleast helped to contain arsenal a bit more.}

4.) 04 Oct 2015 19:48:55
I just hope today forces the manager to make some adjustments.

We need to pick ourselves up for the next game which will be another tough one.

04 Oct 2015 17:39:31
I think the second half proves we need to switch back to a midfield three when we play the top sides.

samthered15

1.) 04 Oct 2015 17:47:14
I agree Sam, controlled the game much better although easier to do so when Arsenal are 3-0 up and shut up shop.

2.) 04 Oct 2015 19:21:00
They had nothing to prove in the second half and we are lucky their finishing was poor or it would have been 5 or 6. We did nothing in the second half besides a pass to rooney that went off his toe and allowed cech an easy save.

3.) 04 Oct 2015 19:42:58
Granted GCU, but I think we had a good formula last season against the top sides in the league that worked, which included a three man midfield.

4.) 04 Oct 2015 20:06:31
Sam

That means dropping 1 or 2 from Depay, Rooney or Martial and that is not going to happen. I though we would lose the game because their speed is unbelievable especially if you try and play possession football and give the ball away.

I am more disappointed with us offensively as this is a team that concedes and will concede goals but we still managed to create very little even though they let us have the ball once ahead.

Kind of a bit naive to try and play an open game with them with Carrick and schweinstegier in the middle. Carzola had a field day and walcot ran riot and Ozil had his best game in yonkers. We made them all look great lol.

I got grief for saying we should not start Depay, he leaves our left back completely stranded. I would also drop Rooney but Wilson is not the answer and maybe mata at 10 but that means playing Herrera on the right, which is not anywhere his natural position.

Young should play left wing as he works his a. s of defensively and smart enough not to give away possession.

04 Oct 2015 16:47:39
If only that would have gone in from Marital.

We needed a goal before half time. Second half will be a flat affair now.

samthered15

1.) 04 Oct 2015 16:58:12
Yeah Arsene will just camp now, hitting on the break. Knowing that for some reason our lads think making 20 passes is the same as scoring! We can't even manage that today.

SchMidfield, you say he is carrying out the instructions of the owners, but what exactly are those instructions? It isn't as if Woodward has been penny pinching of late. We have had to pay top dollar for most of the players we have signed.

I don't recall Muller ever coming out and saying that he would never play for United. I do recall hearing that Munich didn't want to sell.
I don't believe the player is averse to the idea; and why would he be? His former team captain joined the club, and by all accounts, is enjoying the experience.

It seems it is more of a case of trying to convince Munich to sell him. I am pretty sure if a deal could be struck between the two clubs in the future, the player wouldn't have a problem joining.

Alas, none of us possess any psychic ability that allows us to see into the future, so it really is conjecture.

Things change all the time in football.

How many big signings to Gill make in last years of his tenure? I suppose RVP can be counted as a big signing, but I am of the understanding that it was a conversation between SAF and Wenger that got the deal done.

How many players have been brought into the club while Woodward has been in charge?
His first year wasn't helped by the dithering of Moyes'. The club had already done the ground work to bring in some good players, but Moyes' didn't want them. He instead wanted unrealistic targets.

We can all talk about this player and that player, but at the end of the day, Munich didn't want to sell Muller to us; but I suspect that it will be a different story in the summer if we are still pursuing the player.

samthered15

{Ed001's Note - why would it be a different story? The player has no interest in the move and the club have no interest in selling him. It would be a major shock if either of them changed their position over the course of the season.}

I am pretty certain Martial will be at United in 6 years times.
I'd put money on it.
Not every player in world football aspires to play for Madrid. Some view United as the pinnacle as well.

samthered15

{Ed007's Note - Aye right, very good (rofl) Are you stuck in a timewarp? Utd aren't even seen as the pinnacle of the English league by English players let alone foreigners. Even when Utd pay top dollar they end up with diddies like ADM while Bale, Sanchez, Modric, Ozil, Hazard etc all go elsewhere.}
