It's a shame Lucien Favre recently moved to Dortmund because he ticks all the boxes for me.

So it seems Renato Sanches has signed for Bayern. Really hope this won't be an ongoing theme this summer.

Just a question for the Eds or anyone else, with the Spanish, German and French windows closing in the next few hours I just wanted to clarify if this was only for purchasing players and they'd freely be allowed to sell to clubs whose window is still open?

Cheers!

{Ed004's Note - The foreign clubs can still sell players}

They need to get the paper work into their respective fa's for incoming players. but can still sell players. I think it is the Russian league that closes in a couple of weeks and they seem to be doing business well after everyone else.

Thought as much but was beginning to worry a tad! Thanks for the response!

Seeing as Shaw seems to miss half the season through injuries, having another true LB makes sense. Reguilon also gives the option of a LWB or an attacking LB to offer width if we want to play a diamond.

Also, if (and it's a big if) we were to sign Sancho, it takes a lot of the right sided burden off of AWB - especially as Sancho has more of a tendency to stay wide compared to all our other wide forwards, lessening the need for an overlap. This would allow for us to play a lopsided FB system similar to what Jose uses, with AWB staying more defensive and allowing Maguire and Lindelof to shift left when Reguilon bombs on. With Rashford's tendency to play in the half spaces and in the inside channel, it's more imperative to have a fullback who offers the width and an overlapping option on the left side, and I could see Reguilon being a good choice in this system.

I think he'd be a good acquisition personally, as he would offer cover, competition and more tactical options to allow us to be more flexible. It also would allow Brendan to play on the right as cover for AWB/ come in if we were to play with wing backs.

I think it's the striker Paulinho at Braga.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for such a detailed response. I wanted to enquire as to whether the club are still considering a CB as high priority - in particular Upamecano as I believe in the past we’ve been interested?

Thanks.

SomersetRed

{Ed002's Note - Dayot Upamecano (CB) looked at by Bayern Munich as a Jerome Boateng replacement but they had another preferred plan - now that is not achievable he is back on the table for BM with RBL having a replacement in their sights. Barcelona have DU on a long list of CBs primarily because he is more affordable than others as he only has a year left on his contract - but they are fearful of making another Umtiti or Mina type error. Milan asked about a price but they have financially more viable options in what are tough times for them. Real Madrid enquired after him when discussing Werner with RBL, but they have preferred options so he will be down the list a bit. It is hard to see CB as a priority for the summer for MU this summer unless they can sell players on.}

Out of interest Ed001, who do you think is our best outfield player if not Pogba?

SomersetRed

{Ed001's Note - Wan-Bissaka probably. Though I would take Rashford and Lindelöf over Pogba as well.}

Jesus Jaime, it must be exhausting living so relentlessly under grey skies.

Darren Fletcher spoke pretty well on MotD2.

We may not be in the same cycle as the City/ Liverpool one which is dominating currently. However, we've a cracking squad full of young talent who seem to have a good mentality and are relatively grounded. A few additions here and there - perhaps a top RW and a new top level DM next year - and I think when the youngsters are hitting their prime in 2-3 years, we'll have a team capable of honours across the board.

Yes there's a lot of bloating to the squad, and it needs trimming. And yes, Ole may not be the top level coach that will get us said honours. But if you can't see there is a core of quality young players in this squad with the potential to play some cracking attacking football, then I don't know what you've been watching. The hyperbole and lack of patience amongst some fans leads me to despair - I don't know if this is a modern culture of needing instant results or what, but it is exhausting and I feel like some people need to step back and have a look at the wider picture.

I'm happy to hold fire on a CB. We've so many on the books as it is and I'll be willing to roll the dice on whether Maguire and Lindelof can strike up more of an understanding. I think it evident that Bailly cannot maintain his fitness for a season, but I'd also like Tuanzebe to have the opportunity to try and string some games together - was last year an anomaly in his fitness or is he another who will be plagued with time on the sidelines? That should be clearer by next summer. Also, Mengi looks great and could compliment Maguire nicely - could he be ready to step up in a year's time? I think next summer the necessity for a CB will be more evident, and although we occasionally look shaky at the back, I think signing a LB, and RW (as well as Donny) will give us a lot more balance and depth to the squad.

Red Man, AWB was signed after 1 full season in the Prem in an average team. He's got a fantastic defensive foundation and a history as a winger. Perhaps the powers that be saw potential in him to improve in an attacking sense.
I can't think of many RBs who are available and are the complete product (I can't think of many who are complete full stop - even TAA was suspect defensively when we signed AWB) . I would rather sign a defensively sound RB and try to build an attacking game on that that the other way around, especially with the fragility of the rest of our defence. I think AWB, particularly before the break, was improving markedly in an attacking sense and I hope that will continue.

We are also looking at a RW who can go both wide and inside - perhaps this was part of the long term plan also, negating AWB's relative attacking bluntness somewhat.

For the marginal offside decisions, I feel an 'umpire's call' situation similar to cricket, where you stick with the onfield decision should the difference be miniscule. Yes, Jordan Ayew was technically offside looking at the images the other day, but if that's outside the margin of error for the technogy, then I feel it should be 'umpire's call'.
