So it seems as if Wout Weghorst is ten Hag's chosen one.

I'm sure it'll take an absolute pasting on here but I actually think it'll be a better option that some of the other mentioned possibilities.

- a player who is in form (one in two this season for Besiktas and a couple at the World Cup)

- a very clear plan B option later on in games as someone totally different to anything else in the squad

- not going to throw his toys out of the pram being on the bench more often than not

- has played in the PL before

- looks as if it'll be done EARLY in the window which is unheard of from us

There's plenty worse options out there.

Wout Weghorst on loan? Farce.

Why’s it a farce what have I missed? A loan deal for a forward whom is type of profile that ETH has had before! Represented Holland at World Cup! What’s the problem? Not sparkly and glamorous enough probably.

He isn’t the exact player some people wanted Chris, prepare for some toys coming out of the pram. It’s very different to Ighalo before anybody says it’s exactly the same, he’s a different type of player, hasn’t been playing in China for 3 years and is coming into a team that is doing well.

He'll thrive off the service from Eriksen and Bruno.

It smacks of EtH's finger prints. Seems like he has been given the limitations and has provided this as an acceptable solution. Could be a master stroke. Offers something very different to what we have. Shouldn't disrupt the squad togetherness. The type of signing I was hoping for, a bit left field, but adds something extra to the squad without disrupting the longer terms plans.

Maybe we should pay £100+ million for Joao Felix then Redman?
Weghorst makes so much more sense than the other names banded about.

7.) 07 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 20:14:28
Red Man wanted Felix and now everyone else would seemingly be a farse.

Anybody expecting a big name striker in January was dreaming. We hardly ever do that in January and especially not when our owners are selling up. None of the names being bandied about are world beaters but they are only on loan. If eth gets someone he can work with and use when needed then that’s good enough for me. Hopefully come the summer we have new owners who will fully back eth vision and help him achieve it.

I honestly googled and thought of him as a cheap signing because of the Dutch connection and WC performance. I remember one game Burnley had against us when he was really good.

I'd rather have him over depay. Also it makes it clear we genuinely have zero money to spend.
ETH has been very good with his transfers till now. Casemiro, Licha and Eriksen have been success. Antony and Malacia have been decent.
Dubravka was a bad signing. The players he wasn't able to get in De Jong had a great WC, Gakpo was flying, Arnautovic is a top scorer, Rabiot was having a very good season at Juve and WC.
I think Weghorst will be a success. Not glamourous not a shiny name at all but I'm certain he'll work out very well.

Not impressed at all. Rather have nobody come in than bringing in these over the hill players. Pretty sure ten hag said average players aren't welcome. Heed your own advice.

07 Jan 2023 20:57:33
If he didn’t have Burnley on his CV, everyone would be getting a twitch over him. He’s a half decent striker who will offer something different.

12.) 07 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 21:23:44
Looked on Wikipedia just now he scored 345 goals in 20 games for Burnley not a bad return!

13.) 07 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 21:24:59
Maybe McTominay up front not such a bad idea after all.

14.) 07 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 21:29:49
The manager has recently talked about our poor history in the transfer market. Expensive signings on big wages and of poor quality have stifled the club for a decade.

I know this has an Ighalo feel to it but if Weghorst can come in, score some goals and take the pressure off the forward line, keep our powder dry until the summer market, this could be a shrewd signing.

In his short time here the manager has already proved he knows what he's doing. If he thinks he can do a job for us then I'm looking forward to him if he joins.

15.) 07 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 22:18:04
Eric79, McTominay isn’t going to play up top for this club. Not a chance.

16.) 08 Jan 2023
07 Jan 2023 23:24:03
Recent form aside I thought Weghorst looked a handful for Burnley at times last season. It’s not a long term solution (unless he makes it one by scoring a sackful) but I agree with most it looks the pick of the names banded about. Seems another lazy Dutch connection but maybe having that affinity with the coach/ es and a few players at the club really helps.

17.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 00:10:06
Wikipedia has been corrected it was only 2 goals in 20 games.

For a start United Addict, please enlighten me where I said I wanted Felix? To help you I didn’t. I did say we needed a CF, a good one. I mentioned Ramos at Benfica but no chance of that this month.

ETH has talked quality and the importance of the standard of player, then we go for a Burnley rejected loanee in Turkey, that is why I said farce. Not farse by the way.
Note what Ed002 said- “Besiktas will resist his loan being bought out in January but Burnley have had an attractive offer for the player from Manchester United. Could be horribly expensive and makes little sense”

We desperately need a CF yet it needs to fit and be the right quality. I am not convinced a Burnley reject who didn’t work in the Premier league is the right choice. Smacks of desperation to me, desperation of small town skinflint owners who ripped the heart out of the club.

Looks to me like some on here are so desperate for anyone they will wet their pants when any name comes up particularly if Dutch.

If Wout comes, maybe we need another so we have two strikers, if allowed 2 on loan.

19.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 09:48:09
What Red Man said.

20.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 10:13:52
Simply put there are very few top class strikers who we could sign, and none of them are available in January.

That leaves us three choices in this window.

1. Sign no one, stick with what we have and hope Martial stays fit and Rashford's form maintains.

2. Sign someone who isn't good enough probably for more than they are worth as it's the January market. Then be stuck with them for the next 4-5 years with them pulling a wage but hardly contributing and them limiting who else we could sign.

3. Sign someone on loan to cover or offer something different to what we have. Then in the summer we can hopefully sign our first choice option and really strengthen the squad.

Of those three options I think we can all agree that the third option of signing someone on loan makes the most sense and is by far the best solution.

So who can we sign on loan? Well very few clubs are willing to sell their best players for an inflated fee in January let alone send them out on loan.
Which means you are looking at players who either aren't playing regularly, out of form, out of favour, or generally unwanted by their current club to the extent that they would be prepared to send them out on loan.

The options in the media that have been mentioned are Aboubakar, a player who has been playing in Saudi Arabia for the past 2 years, is 30 years old and only ever had one good season at a good level.

João Felix, a potentially great player, but is out of form. He doesn't really play as a CF but as a support striker or No.10 so his profile doesn't really suit what we are looking for. He's more of a rotation option for Bruno Fernandes than someone who could play the lone CF role. He would also be very expensive, massive wages, huge loan fee and possibly an obligation to buy in the summer.

Wout Weghoust is the newest name we have been linked with and of the three options here makes the most sense. He is the right profile of player, a poacher with physical presence, has EPL experience and is supposedly available.

He was actually fairly good for a very poor Burnley side last season and was feeding off of scraps in a side that created the fewest chances of any side in EPL history. At all other clubs his goal scoring record has been good as well as international level.

He was unprepared to drop down to the championship so Burnley sent him out on loan in hope of him returning if they get promoted back to the EPL.

He isn't a flashy name, but given the circumstances he might be the best option for now.

Thanks for the spellcheck Redman, appreciate it. For the rest of your post, see Shappy's post underneath yours. I usually don't agree with Shappy but i think he is damn right with this one.

Redman I think your being pathetic and you are exactly the type of toxic supporter the club can do without imo.
You want rashford out
You want Bruno out
You slated the signing and playing of martinez initially
You slsted the signing of casimero initially.
You don't support the manager unless on your terms.
You moan about everything like a spoilt child.
You mention garnacho at every opportunity like you unearthed him. But you were same about hanibal who has been average in the championship so you don't mention him every 5 min anymore because you were wrong.
There is a reason you are not employed in football.
It's because your not qualified you've no experience and frankly when it comes to players football management contracts ownership etc you haven't got a clue what your talking about. I'd suggest none of us really do most of the time. But your arrogant enough to think your right all the time. I'd say you and the likes of you are a bigger threat to the club than a 6 month temp loan signing.
Tell me would you stand over a heart surgeon and tell him how to do his job? No because your not qualified. But I'd say your arrogant enough to have a go at telling him what to do.

The tide certainly seems to have turned against Felix. A few weeks ago there was a real excitement about the prospect but as soon as someone who knew what they were talking about suggested he would be competing with Fernades rather than playing up front he's suddenly the last player we need.
We need a bread and butter target man who can play through the middle as we have limited options and no sign of anyone coming through anywhere near the required level. Wieghorst is a great shout in my unqualified opinion. If he smashes it out the park then maybe even beyond May, not every signing has to break the bank.

26.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 13:05:28
He knows where the net is, can hold the ball well. He will be motivated as it will be his last chance to earn a contract at a huge club. Talk of a £10mil buy option. He could be an excellent squad option if it works- if the key word there.

Harsh to judge him just on his time at Burnley, Di Maria had a stinker of a season with us and was still a good player for example. If you go and watch some of his goals there’s clever movements and good finishes. Let’s give him a chance.

Important to remember that we are skint judging by the last accounts, so we can’t afford to go and get an osimhen. I’d be more worried if we signed Felix. Going after a big name who doesn’t fit what the manager wants.

27.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 13:54:35
Caolan,

We aren’t skint, not sure what accounts you saw but that mis truth seems to be being spread around quite a lot. We spent a lot in summer over the budget and don’t want our pants pulled down in what is always a tricky January window, there will be more signings in summer, although the investment or sale of the club may have some impact on everything.

28.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 14:34:57
Given the choice of Wout or no one, I'm taking Wout. We need numbers in the striking department. A 6 month loan never harmed anyone. Anyone remember Henrik Larrson?

29.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 15:08:57
Ken

Are you missing screaming bile from the terraces, so all your frustration is pent up and put in toxic posts?

Happy to discuss and express opinions, but cut the personal stuff out. If that’s now banter it’s not the site I thought it was.

30.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 16:32:19
GDS I saw the same account that showed we owe over 250 million on transfers and have 24 million in the bank compared to 300 a couple or three years ago. Yes there’s access to the over draft (speaking in simple terms) which I doubt we would use to create more debt if we are to be sold.

Not claiming to have a great understanding of this stuff, but it’s certainly not looking rosy under these owners lol.

31.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 16:56:14
No personal stuff. Your negativity is toxic imo.
Rarely do you have anything positive to say.
There was no personal insult there at all. I've said nothing there that you have not said about players or coaches. So please practise what you preach or don't get touchy when someone gives you a taste of your own medicine. OK for you to say what you like about who you like so don't take a hissy fit when you get some back.
You three plenty of insults at ole (I can't blame you for that) plenty at Woodward plenty at the glazers you call them leeches etc. So if you think that by calling you arrogant it's a personal insult your wrong.
Telling a subject matter experts how to do his job and questioning everything without any knowledge or expertise yourself smacks of arrogance whether you like it or not. I don't exclude myself from that accusation either.
Opinions are fine we all have them we all won't agree in fact rarely do. None of us know very much but we all have opinions.
But all you do is moan most of the time.
So what is it you want?
Do you want business men to spend a further 70 80 m on players when they're selling the club? Dumbass thing to do from a pure business perspective imo.
Very few businesses would do that.
You bias and disdain for the owners is pouring out of you and making you sound toxic about the whole club.
Why not try to embrace the improvement we are seeing?
You realise we have picked up more points than any team bar arsenal since 2nd game of season. More than city Liverpool etc.
You lauded spurs summer window and slated ours. But you stopped moaning about that when you realised how wrong you were.
You have turned more bitter than a case of lemons.
You call yourself a supporter but rarely do you post anything supportive for the club or any of its employees. (Except garnacho your latest fav)
I actually would question whether you support the club whole heartedly at all.
I draw that conclusion because you refuse to embrace the improvement. You are a guy that questions every single decision the manager makes. Questioning him when you are not a subject matter experts by any standards. You call for subs like a child that wants his own way. But you have never managed a pro team never seen them training have no idea what goes on. He knows more than you ever will. He is an expert while your not.
The owners are not going to splash their money this winter.
They have no affinity with the fans you spent the last 17 years abusing then along with many others and now you want them to spend their money to keep you happy. Why on earth would they spend big money they won't get back for a bunch of folk that spent the last 17 years abusing them.
I don't suppose you would do any favour for them so don't expect one in return.
We are miles from where we need to be but for the first time in years we seem to be on an upward trajectory and while we probably won't win anything this year most people are of the same opinion that eth is doing well.
Supporters like you are few and far between and from reading your rhetoric you appear to want this manager to fail.
Try and embrace the fact that we are doing better. Are better to watch the players are working hard and improving.
Rome was not built in a day. Try and be a bit more positive or failing that at least try to be a little less negative. You never know you might like it.

Skinflint owners isn't a new thing Redman, see Ighalo, Cavani, Ronaldo stop gap options, there is probably more. This situation isn't new and isn't going away until glazers sell up. We have to deal with it.

It doesn’t concern me at all we are getting this guy, i am fully behind the manager and if he thinks he can get a tune out of this guy then so be it. I was way over at the other end of the scale when solskjaer signed igahlo as i didn't believe in the manager.

I also believe players can look awful for 1 system and setup and look insanely brilliant for another, hence another reason i'm all for letting eth choose this guy.
If he can get him playing in the system and scoring a goal every other game on average it will be an great signing.

34.) 08 Jan 2023
08 Jan 2023 18:55:36
? it's not meant that way unruly.
Redman is one of the longest and most liked and respected posters on here.
But imo his negativity and disdain for the owners is bleeding into his every thought about the club. Perhaps not quite over the ole trauma we all suffered. I'll give my honest opinion and that is that the negativity and constant nit picking pouring out of him is akin to the negativity ole was producing about the place.
Things are not perfect but build a bridge and get over it and embrace the positives and stop questioning everything you don't agree with every 5 mins. It's draining.
Look at where we were only 12 months ago.
Everybody should read mumbles post on the discussion page. That in one short post sums up the whole thing.

I was surprised when the links with Weghost surfaced. But the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. We need a striker, and he's a good player with presence and can score goals. His Burnley stint coincided with them having a nightmare season. So, who knows what he can achieve given the chances we're creating. Martial is injury prone and does not score many, I thing Weghost might prove a very good signing. Of course it will be nice to have João Felix as well as I think Bruno and Erikson need rotation as we have a lot of games to play. But if we can only get one player in, then Weghost is the best option.
I think I'm not mistaken in saying that Redman didn't like the ETH appointment preferring Simione. But, I was fully behind the ETH appointment as he's a technical manager with a strong work ethic and discipline record. So, if ETH has given his blessing to sign Weghost, then let's believe in him, he's done a great job so far.
