With EtH seemingly teetering on the brink and fan opinion slowing beginning to change I think it's only fair we examine what do we want from a Man Utd manager?

If you rewind 2 years EtH arrived to much fanfare. He was the overwhelming choice for the majority of this fan base. He played some fantastic football with a young and vibrant Ajax team. He was innovative and tactically astute. He'd presided over some great results and performances particularly in the Champions League against European giants. He'd lost key players but managed to re build the team and remain successful. He gave opportunities to young players.

Some may argue he wasn't in change of recruitment at Ajax and he's made some big mistakes in that department during his time at Utd but is that not on the Club? We have been making mistakes in the transfer market long before EtH arrived.

If memory serves me right, I think he was interviewed for the Spurs job and they raised some concerns about his charisma and personality. I don't think most fans were particularly concerned by this, especially considering Spurs track record in appointing new managers!

EtH was the fans choice, he had the overwhelming support of the vast majority of the fan base and I think it's so disappointing to see him in trouble.

I accept there has been mistakes and those that want him out do make some valid arguments, which must be carefully considered!

My question is if EtH is sacked, what characteristics are we looking for in the new manager? What do we actually want? What are we looking for?

I just read that ETH banned three Newspapers from his press conference today. One of which is Manchesters main evening newspaper. Really do not think that is a good strategy banning the main local paper. You can't change opinion by banning them.

I believe they were banned from asking questions Red Man!

Samuel Luckhurst openly called for EtH to be sacked after the Coventry game.

Are journalists there to provide the facts or give their opinion now?

It’s unprofessional for the Chief Correspondent of the local paper, to call for a manager to be sacked. It’s not his decision, his opinion is no more valid than anyone else and the majority of this fan base still remain behind the manager.

Results and SJR will ultimately dictate the managers fate not the baseless opinion of a journalist more interested in printing their opinion than reporting the facts and then crying because they can’t ask a couple of questions in a Press Conference. He’s made his pitch he must now face the consequences. What’s EtH got to lose?

SAF banned newspapers. Fans loved it. I guess the fans didn’t desperately want SAF out so easy to change your standards.

Still think EtH can get there, needs another season and an overhaul of players. Bring through more youth. A few signings in key roles to establish more of a front foot style and see what we can do next season. I know it is not my choice. But I live in hope.

Agreed DB.
If you'd have told me 3 cup finals (1, maybe 2 trophies) and top 3 finish within his first 2 seasons. Under the constraints and absolute shambles he has had to work with, I would have bitten your hand off.

Give him the time.

I agree. He has had to manage poor players but also poor leaders of the club.
My only real complaint is his game management. he changes this and we unravel.
Can't wait to see the back of some of the rubbish pulling our club down.

Our youth system seems primed!

+16 goal difference over almost two full seasons says it all….

We have given more minutes to academy graduates this year than the top 6 combined.

We have less points than 5 of them.

The main problems I see are where we are in the league, the performances we have, the relationship he has with players and the transfers (Onana, Antony, Mount costed 180M)

With new owners trying to effect change, there is no way he gets another go.

ETH has wasted tens of millions not least on Antony, on other players. He has not given a hint of a pattern other than inverted wingers. His mouth is a big problem especially after games, alienating the press and his players, throwing a young player under the bus at a press conference was unforgivable and that is before we get to his ingame management and substitutions.

In the positive side he has given young players time in the team, think he could have given more at home to Sheffield though. Whoever is in charge next year needs to command respect of the players and ETH will have to get that back, if still there and give the U18 a chance instead of the Malacia’s and Antony’s.

From what ed002 has said, Southgate is a front runner for the job.

I’ve been in favour of giving ETH another year, if only to give the new directors time to develop a strategy and identify a few coaches they think can achieve it. But ETH’s performance over the last month has raised some huge question marks. Specifically his game management in winning positions and his increasingly baffling defence of the team allowing so many shots against them. Added to this are the rumblings about his difficult personality and tensions with the players.

It feels like we’re headed for a lose lose situation. Either Southgate gets hired and we start the rebuild with a coach of limited experience and ability that the new directors did not, necessarily, choose. Or we stick with ETH and are stuck with a failing manager and a fractured dressing room.

If it’s a straight choice between another year of ETH or a rebuild under Southgate, I’d stick with ETH. It will mean another bad season, but at least it gives the directors time to put a real plan in place. If a better candidate than Southgate can be identified, that’s a different story. I just think sacking ETH for Southgate will put the club back years in a rebuild, and we’ll be in the exact same situation two years down the road.

I don't think the cost of any player can be thrown at the Hag's (or any other manager's door) . There are people above the manager whose job is to oversee transfer negotiations and the people we've had for the past decade have been woeful. Should Antony have been on the shortlist at all is a better question. Probably not because at that point we had Sancho and Diallo. Now we're looking at Olise. The right wing is a problem position.

I agree Danny but don’t necessarily think that if EtH is here next year we’ll have a bad season. I think he can’t turn it around, some may call this wishful thinking but that’s what I believe.

I think there’s loads of mitigation and much will depend on the return and fitness of key players such as Martinez and Shaw but I’m certainly not expecting another bad season if EtH keeps his job.

I agree Spenno EtH did not negotiate those deals or tell the Club to spend £80m on Antony. That’s on the incompetence of Arnold and Murtough. Both have now left. If they were semi competent at their jobs they wouldn’t be relying on EtH to recommend players anyway. I think a lot of criticism can be laid at EtH door but overspending on players is not his fault and has been going on for years before he arrived. Pogba, Sancho, Sanchez, Di Maria, Lukaku et al!

Seems there's a very good chance that ETH may be moved on. Looking at what managers are available for next season. for me Southgate is a massive no, I was sort of hoping for tuchel the last time he was available but he didn't pull up any trees in the PL. I genuinely thought he would have been the new jose and just bosses the league (not pep) but the rest.

Is Zidane available? what's the general feeling on him? We all know he did well at RM but UTD are a different animal. For me. I think ZZ would bring discipline that's been missing.

26 Apr 2024 09:23:47
Everybody thought ETH "would bring discipline that's been missing. "
Oh wait on, he has and now folk are complaining that having done it he has alienated the players and should be sacked. You couldn't make it up!

Zidane at United 😂😂😂? He walked into an absolutely star studded world class dressing room at Real Madrid. We don't have that at United. It would be an absolute disaster. Ten hag needs to be backed properly above with a proper structure of football men in the right places and he needs to be given time. Arteta was backed to the hilt through some very troubling times, he also moved on pretty much the whole squad. We need something similar at United and only then will we see us turn the corner. Patience is needed here to mould a brand new squad.

I watch the warm up with interest. Just observations.
Bruno was excellent in warm up, good accuracy and as they say practice makes perfect he banged a couple in from the distance he scored from.
Hojland, like against Liverpool was ordinary in the warm up, missing the target several times and even slipped and fell over.
Young Wheatley in warm up where they do one touch in a circle, saw he had quick feet. When he came on he seemed to run on his toes, glide and closed a defender down so quickly, tall looks a good prospect at first sight.
Antony Backwards should be his name. Notable live how he never challenges the full back, never tests for pace, just turn and pass back.

25 Apr 2024 14:09:13
I’ve noticed that Hojlund slips a few times in games when he’s about to shoot.

Keane and Neville mention training and the warm up today on the overlap you should listen, i agreed with them.

Ports, why isn’t the manager tying his laces for him?

A while back I posted a link waxing lyrical about a young talent in Australia called Nestory Irankunda and to keep an eye out. Bayern Munich swept him up and he heads to Europe in a few weeks after the A League season.

But before he goes he will be representing the A League all stars against Newcastle United. Now he may well be outclassed at this early stage but hopefully he can put in a good showing.

This kid has it all. Size, speed, skill and arrogance.

Ethan Wheatley: "Bruno pulled me to the side and told me I’ve got nine minutes to try get you a goal. "

You can keep your hate. This man's my captain. He cares more, and shows passion, and has a greater determination to win than any player we've had in a long, long time. And he's banging in goals and staking up assists.

 13

25 Apr 2024 06:28:22
He does have leadership qualities, people would be blind to deny that.

Unfortunately the play acting and petulance overshadow how good he is. Although he’s back in form recently, and nobody on here can take his numbers away from him.

For me he’s our best player, somebody who would thrive under Pep, and we should be looking to keep him.

25 Apr 2024 08:25:10
The argument is that in a better-performing team those negative traits are less prevalent so his antics are really a by-product of the current state of affairs. Last season we called them passionate and defending the club, this season they're adding fuel to the fire.

25 Apr 2024 08:32:36
Leaders don’t lead when lying screaming on the floor whilst the opposition storm forward. Lead from the front is an old saying yet where has he been? Why did Hojland have to stand on his own after scoring a high pressure pen last week, where was the leader then?
Bruno runs a lot, but doesn’t appear to be in any structure, does what he wants, freedom with responsibility. Sets an example for energy but not one to go into a battle with, not a leader for me,

 4

25 Apr 2024 08:51:38
Doesn't appear to be in any structure? Does what he wants. Whose fault is that I wonder?

 3

25 Apr 2024 09:08:39
Yes Keefy but I wasn’t starting that argument on this thread!
Hope you enjoyed being there live, I did. Will post on that
Bruno gets plaudits but is not disciplined, runs an awful lot mind you. Warming up his shooting was good, scoring with similar shots to what he did in the match.

Problem is Redman, and I agree with you as I posted about it, had he run up and celebrated with Hojlund after the Penalty, fans would be saying it's embarrassing and he needed to show class towards Coventry like Maguire, he didn't and now people (You ;) ) are questioning his leadership. Now he could have achieved both but then you could argue why didn't Maguire go to Hojlund.

Fernandes is a target for the fan base because of his antics but he's the one player who is always available, the one player who will stand in front of the camera after a game, he was on 1 leg playing CB v Liverpool which no one mentions. The lads stats are, outstanding in what people are saying is an unstructured team, more G/ A this season than Odergaard and De Bruyne will lesser players around him. I'd be fairly confident fans would take Guimaraes, Saka, Maddison, Jota, Salah in this team yet they are all guilty of these traits Fernandes shows.

Traits that we don't like is common in the game, a reason enjoying football becomes harder and harder each season along with VAR but I think we need to, not look past it but praise what he does as much as we criticise what he does. I have a list as long as my arm on players I personally want out of the club this summer and Fernandes is not on it or would be right at the bottom of the list if he was.

25 Apr 2024 11:09:27
Ports spot on. Yes his moaning and play acting at times is unnecessary but he clearly cares and tries every game. If all other players in the team had half his work ethic Utd would be playing much better and not losing so much. Also as pointed out as there is no clear playing structure he often feels compelled to run all over the pitch to cover for where other players should be.

 5

25 Apr 2024 11:32:03
Can't be critical of him last night or indeed for effort practically every week.

 2

25 Apr 2024 12:11:14
Agree, can’t criticise his effort and at the game you can see his running even more but it needs to be channeled, he needs coaching to be in the places where he can do most damage and not lose structural integrity of our set up. Looks like as Captain he is trying to be seen to do the most, his running stats must be ahead of everyone.
I just don’t understand why we blabbed £60m on Mount who plays in the same position and is injured a lot.

 0

25 Apr 2024 12:32:28
Yeah Redman, if we'd spent that £60m on either a mediocre left back and mediocre center back, or a decent DM, I think we'd have a good chance at having made CL places this season.

 0

25 Apr 2024 13:14:06
Yes Redman. Enjoyed being there. Stretford end seats. Going back for Burnley game.

Sorry to hear about your mum, Keefy.

25 Apr 2024 18:13:42
Kids got more than 9 minutes to get a goal, he has his whole future to score goals. Just Bruno being a egotistical tit as usual.

 0

25 Apr 2024 21:03:36
What a ridiculous comment Nev. It won't be long until Mainoo starts to get taken down like everyone at our club does on this site.

 3

25 Apr 2024 22:02:38
So apparently, Bruno broke his hand playing against Coventry, but still insisted on playing yesterday. You've got to admit that's at least a little captain like.

 3

25 Apr 2024 22:27:46
No doubt he loves UTD, he's excellent with the younger players, a real mentor. Its a shame he has the love that say Keane or any of the old guard but the grit and guile of a 4 year old whos ball has been taken.
