I didn't watch the game so cannot comment on the performance.
I saw the teamsheet and opted to not watch the game as I had very low expectations of us putting in a decent performance and taking home 3pts.
I feel refreshed for prioritising my sleep for once.
10 May 2026 07:40:22
You look at a timesheet and decide not to watch a game? 😂
We are 3rd, won 10, drew 3, and lost 2 in our last 15 games. I've thoroughly enjoyed this period, to be honest.
Yesterday, we played like a team that had nothing to play for. It is completely normal that there was a drop off in levels.
Overall, we are in a great position looking into the summer window.
Also, I see Ederson looks like he may be coming our way. I don't know much about him, but he seems to be highly thought of, and can't be much worse than Ugarte lol. For the reported fee of 45m Euro, if he is as good as what people say, it would be a good fee. Plus, I think last year's window speaks for itself. Wilcox and co did a decent job then.
09 May 2026 22:36:24
Another turgid performance emphasising yet again how much we need better midfield players and also how we rely on moments of inspiration to win matches rather than build sustained periods of pressure which helps to dominate teams.
You can't blame Carrick for the players he selected today putting in a poor performance but you can for not getting the balance of the team right.
As others have mentioned, why Heaven isn't being given a proper run out is bewildering as is the decision not to use more of the younger players.
Going forward, one would hope that being a former midfielder Carrick realises the need to get not two but three midfielders for next season.
10 May 2026 07:41:42.
Salford, I've been saying this for a while. Regardless of the manager, he needs better players if we are to consistently perform.
It matters who the coach is, but it matters less if he has quality players at his disposal.
CM will change the game for us if we can get it right.
09 May 2026 19:55:24
Carrick's decision to drop Heaven for Martinez needs to be questioned. What’s the encouragement for a young player to do well and stay in the team? He totally deserved to be selected. No point in coming in doing well, no need to rest him, no known injury. Disgusted, and I would have criticised any manager's decision to do that. Has Carrick explained it?
09 May 2026 21:15:14
Maybe the idea is to put Martinez on show because they want to sell him.
09 May 2026 21:19:53
I'd have started Licha in cm today. That or Bruno. Certainly not Mount.
09 May 2026 21:32:22
Martinez is first choice, Heaven was playing because Martinez was suspended. I think that's pretty bloody obvious.
09 May 2026 22:04:02
GDS
Terrible man management. The message given is that it doesn't matter how well you play, you will be dropped when someone is fit. It causes resentment and utter frustration, plus distrust in the decision maker.
Been in that position, so I can tell you first hand. Very poor decision for me.
If it is to get more money for Martinez, who is telling Carrick who to select, and why is he accepting it?
09 May 2026 22:36:31
Martinez is an experienced international, he was serving a suspension after a sending off, not sure where the issue is here, particularly as we kept a clean sheet.
Seriously Red Man, I know you hold passionate opinions but sometimes you are very blinkered, Carrick obviously freshened up the team, it didn't work, but Martinez for Heaven wasn't the issue.
09 May 2026 23:04:20
AJH
You don't seem to understand motivation. I am not saying Martinez for Heaven was the reason for a turgid display, but wake up and realise Carrick is discouraging players coming in and doing well, because no matter what they do, they get dropped.
On the game. People say the game didn't matter, yet they are playing for the shirt, and people are saying, in effect, the manager cannot motivate the players.
09 May 2026 23:19:31
One of our first team starters returned from suspension, and was picked over a kid still learning the game.
This isn't news.
Picking a team to win is all that matters.
That we didn't was no fault of Martinez's.
Do we want third or not? Sunderland is a tough place to go and get a result this season.
The lad will get his chances.
For someone who regularly slates others on here for being over-emotional, Red Man, I'm rather surprised at your position on this.
09 May 2026 23:36:59
Nou
Play well, stay in the team has gone out the window. If you don't get it, that's fine. Team selection is no longer on merit. It's not emotion, it's motivation techniques and analysis of the decision.
09 May 2026 23:47:29
Clean sheet.
Decision justified.
10 May 2026 00:19:10
Red Man, it's just a match. It's not like he disappeared Heaven for 3 matches in a row. I, too, wanted the kid to play, but I don't think it's as big a deal as you make it. And I, too, have concerns over Carrick, but don't overact for no reason.
10 May 2026 01:06:30
Martinez should have been sent off again today. Not sure what the video ref is doing, to be honest. He lost his head and punched someone in the face. Soft, but clear.
10 May 2026 04:51:45
I don't think putting him back in is the issue. My concern is how anybody thinks that bloody Martinez is a good enough CB to be in a starting 11 in the EPL... that's the judgement I question...
Hopefully some fools come in and buy him along with Zirkee, Ugarte, DeLigt, Yoro. But maybe wishful thinking that anyone is blinkered enough to do that; all the blinkers are used up on here!
10 May 2026 07:43:44
Played at the top level of football for years, has managed United into the Top 3, we have scored more goals and have gotten more points than any team during that period, and here we have Red Man, telling us all how it's done. 😂
10 May 2026 09:07:47
angel
Doesn't make him a good man manager, though, does it? Lots of reports he had issues integrating players at Boro. I don't think dropping Heaven is good management, and it does not send out a good message to our youth looking for a chance. Poor for me.
09 May 2026 18:57:03
Today's game highlighted why I'm not onboard the Carrick train. On the face of it you could argue that it was a good draw, away against a tough side. The reality of what happened on the pitch is that Sunderland threw away 2 points by failing to take the great chances they created. Credit to Lemmens, but that was some poor finishing.
Starting Bruno, Cuhna, Mount and Zirkzee was a major tactical blunder. They all want to operate in the space between midfield and defence. This area was congested when we had possession, and with Amad glued to the right wing, it left us with nobody up front. Our chances came when Dorgu and Mbeumo came on. At least that stretched the defence.
Mount is not a centre mid. He left Manioo isolated in defence and got in Bruno's way in possession. The worst thing is that Carrick watched the first 45 minutes and didn't think he needed to change anything. We created zero chances and looked vulnerable at the back, and he didn't react. Poor game management.
For Carrick to be appointed permanently, there needs to be some sense of progress and direction in regard to what his United team would be about. I haven't seen anything. Can't fault the results, but I am entirely unconvinced that he would be capable of building a side capable of winning trophies.
09 May 2026 20:22:12
Went to the match. Was hoping for great things and three points. In reality, it looked like we barely turned up. Too many misplaced passes and lack of ideas. We were slow and spent too much time committing needless fouls. Sunderland could have easily walked away with all three points.
09 May 2026 21:18:22
I'm certain we'll make the same mistake again by appointing Carrick. It should be thanks for everything, but we're going in a different direction. Nothing against Carrick, but we are mostly where we are because the standard of the other teams has been poor. We have limped over the line in truth.
09 May 2026 21:27:43
With Sesko and Casemiro out, I'm not sure that he had too many options. Amad remains out of form. Can't beat a player; final pass, shooting, and decision making are all very poor.
My guess is United would like to sell Mount, Zirkzee and/or Martinez, and to do that they need to be seen as viable. This was a perfect time to give them an opportunity.
.... But none of them seized the moment. Everyone was off, except Lammens, thank goodness, and imo Dorgu when he came on. Mainoo whiffed at a golden opportunity, Cunha's shot in the dying minutes was weak, and he also failed to make a pass to an open Mbuemo a little earlier.
An all round desultory performance and a very lucky point.
09 May 2026 21:37:14
Lads, you're all going to be very disappointed if you're expecting stellar performances in these last 3 games. Top 5 is secured, the job is therefore done. Today was nothing more than a glorified end of season match. Any players that are playing in the World Cup will be looking to watch their fitness, and who can blame them? We kept a clean sheet, got the point we needed to almost guarantee we finish in the top 3 (we've guaranteed top 4 now), and if we had lost, it doesn't really matter.
In the end, good point in a tough game against a side that's performed well at home this season, the majority of the time.
09 May 2026 22:39:08
Points per game remains league-title-winning form, I'm not convinced by Carrick, but seizing on a poor performance is very transactional.
8 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses, great points, but some worrying performances. I get that, but as GDS said, it's kind of an end-of-season feel now.
10 May 2026 04:56:24
They are all on their deckchairs, but it is utterly ridiculous to state if we lost it doesn't matter. Tell that to the fans who pay to travel, tell that to the millions paid by sponsors, tell that to the mums & dads of the kids...
10 May 2026 03:25:38
Awful performance and the team waS woefully unbalanced. I agree options were limited in midfield. As much as mount is not a cm he is a better one than ugarte imo.
Zirkzee was the only cf option.
Martinez coming back in I'm OK with. Heaven has played well and we have no idea what conversation took place between heaven and Carrick. So he may well not be demotivated at all.
Redman i understand your point but you have no clue what Carrick said to heaven and i think you are making too many assumptions and presumption's. Putting yourself in the shoes of a 19 yo or in fact any player is not being rational imo.
There are too many unknowns.
On the face of it, it might look harsh but who knows what lies beneath.
As for it being end of season stuff I don't accept that at all.
Martinez is not sure of a wc place and need to prove his fitness and durability maguire likewise. Maz likewise. Shaw surely has no hope but I don't think he'd run or try any harder either way.
Mainoo not sure of a spot so these guys are not holding back they just had no shape or plan not surprising it was rubbish mount zirkzee Martinez haven't played for weeks.
I'm all for giving longer lads a run but only after we have secured 3rd place.
10 May 2026 07:45:47
We saw 2 clear things today: the massive drop off without a few key players, most notably Casemiro, and a team that is playing for absolutely nothing. It's human nature to see a drop off.
Onto the summer: get the recruitment right, and it sets up whoever the manager is going to be well.
10 May 2026 09:55:53
I agree with Danny and Blackpool re Carrick. But who is available?
08 May 2026 20:06:11
It's been an awesome season elsewhere.
If anyone didn't see the Rochdale York game in League 2 then go and check it out on YouTube, unbelievable.
I like Frank Lampard, not sure why but he seems a really decent bloke and what a great job he did at Coventry. I really hope he doesn't move too soon again.
Wrexham almost made the play offs, amazing, but their run of successive promotions comes to an end.
Hats of to McKenna who dragged Ipswich over then line for promotion, despite selling his 2 best players post relegation.
Sheffield Wednesday ownership finally changed, giving them a fighting chance of starting to recover next year, albeit from League 1.
Jack Wilshere made a great start at Luton but probably joined them too late. One to watch next year.
Salford missed out on automatic promotion by 1 point, the play offs await.
Bromley promoted, what a story.
Hearts are clinging on at the moment in the SPL, it will be great if they can win it.
God, I love football.
09 May 2026 05:41:15
Elsewhere being the operative word, because the EPL has been poor, imo.
We have done well to get where we are at under Carrick, but the football in general has been uninspiring, to say the least. We can’t go into next season just trying to sit back and wait for Bruno to produce something, or continue to just play on the break. That’s not going to be the way to achieve what is needed.
It’s a huge summer coming up for United, but then again, we said that for the past 10+ years.
I do worry that Carrick has got anything else in his locker, though, and the tactical inexperience will bite us hard on the A***.
Ineos have put themselves in an impossible situation now, though, where they are damned if they do, damned if they don’t!
So we probably have to hope that Carrick is given the right players, players with experience and pace, and at the top of the tree. More buying potential won’t cut it, and we’re going to have to hope Carrick learns fast, really fast.
Hopefully, the quality of the EPL is better next year, because it’s become stale, slow, and very predictable as far as the football on show goes. It’s more about money and athleticism now than talent and skill, which in my view is sad.
09 May 2026 07:33:21
A post about the joy of football, and you turn it into another negative tirade. 🤦♂️
09 May 2026 07:40:19
My daughter's team finally drew a match after losing eight in a row. There were scenes on the sidelines from the parents, anyone would have thought we had won the league. That is the joy of football.
09 May 2026 09:47:48
Ajh, empty vessels and all that. I agree, lots of good stories this season.
09 May 2026 12:09:14
Agree, Ajh, good post. Just for the record, York plays in National League.
09 May 2026 14:22:44
Great post, Ajh!
09 May 2026 14:40:02
My bad, Heaven, I'm hoping Rochdale can get up via the play offs.
09 May 2026 17:00:54
No problem, AJH. But that makes it even better. English football, even in lower leagues, produces some memories. I too want Rochdale to get up via play offs. This battle of the two reminds me of the battle between Notts County and Rexam a lot of years ago (I think), Chester vs Hereford.
08 May 2026 07:39:01
{Ed's Note - Ed001 has posted a new article entitled, Manchester United v Liverpool - A Quick Liverpool Perspective
09 May 2026 09:50:11
Have to say Ed, it looks like you've a hell of a prospect in young Rio.
{Ed001's Note - lot to prove for me. Very flashy but not a lot of substance yet. He needs good coaching, which means not working with Slot!}
09 May 2026 11:38:17
I think that will come with greater exposure Ed, personally I feel like he should've featured a bit more for you guys this year?
Is slot staying or do you not know? I've seen reports he is but some Liverpool supporting mates say no chance
{Ed001's Note - not for me, doesn't track back and doesn't do enough on the ball. It is all leg waving nonsense so far. Lots of hype but little actual end product. I am not sure with Slot, he is not settled in England so might well leave of his own accord. I hope.}
09 May 2026 11:59:10
I get a feeling that's something we are going to see more of now, given the influences of players on this current generation coming through.
Anyway, mate, thanks for responding. Hopefully next season we can both be more competitive towards the top.
08 May 2026 02:04:05
Not UTD related but a managerial question relevant none the less.
Pep and Enrique, 2 former Barcelona players, and both great managers. If I had to choose who is better:
The PSG manager all day.
He inherited superstars and realised that he had to build his own team and he has done it exceptionally well with PSG.
08 May 2026 10:09:32
Enrique has done a brilliant job. He got rid of players who had egos, and replaced them with ones who were not only talented, but grafters.
Both managers inherited teams that had some very good players. Domestically, they were clear challengers, and, more often than not, league winners. European success was evading both clubs.
Enrique's PSG are far more exciting than Man City are.
08 May 2026 11:41:35
Both are great managers and coaches.
Enrique can claim he is as good when he has the same amount of trophies.
Both have produced great teams to watch over the years.
Both have spent big money. Both have rebuilt teams. Both play a lovely attacking style.
This PSG team is great to watch imo. City not so much at the moment, I think Pep has gone a little stale tbh.
Personally, I hope Arsenal win the CL. In battles of beauty v beast, id normally side with beauty, but id rather an Arsenal win on this occasion.
08 May 2026 17:46:46
Both are fantastic managers, Pep got to be in front cos what he won, but I would have either....
I want PSG to win all day long. Prefer football over the anti football Arsenal any day of the week.
Strange how it's all about attitudes though, cos on paper PSG had a better team before, but some awful attitudes now they changed got rid of the attitudes and bingo...
but some don't notice that and have a rant....
09 May 2026 00:01:51
I think their upturn in fortunes after getting rid of the egos was pretty obvious.
09 May 2026 12:25:09
Pep has to be considered the better manager. The style of football he developed, the success he has had, and the unbelievable longevity of competing at that level for so many years. He's literally been in a position where not winning a league title is considered a failure for the vast majority of his career. That's an incredible amount of pressure, and the fact that he hasn't had a full nervous breakdown.
There's an argument that Enrique is the best coach in the world right now. But, as an overall career, Pep is unrivalled. I honestly think Pep should have stepped down two seasons ago to take a break. Now, it feels like he won't be able to quit until he wins the league again because he doesn't want to leave a loser.
09 May 2026 22:42:17
Pep has managed and won in several countries.
Yes, he has had the money and organisation to help, but ultimately he has to create a team to win.
Like Fergie, he has also been very good at rebuilding his teams, as this current City illustrates.
His record speaks for itself. Enrique is clearly a talented manager, but don't forget his PSG team play in a league that's nowhere near as competitive as ours.
08 May 2026 01:16:40
A not too impossible situation could arise where 6th place gets CL football.
If Villa win the Europa League and finish 5th then 6th place also qualify.
If Villa win it and finish 4th then 6th place goes into Europa League.
I think Villa are likely to finish 5th and likely to win the Europa League. What a chance for the likes of Bournemouth Brighton or Brentford. Or a last gasp chance for Chelsea which I don't forsee.
08 May 2026 07:39:09
Or Everton!! I hope it is Everton as I bet on them getting too 6. 💪
08 May 2026 09:19:26
I have a funny feeling it'll be Brighton. What a story that would be.
08 May 2026 11:19:59
I'll put my support behind Fulham. They have Bournemouth tomorrow, which will be significant for either side. If they get the win, they have Wolves away and Newcastle at home.
09 May 2026 07:34:54
Is that correct? I thought the extra place is only created if Villa finish 6th and they have to enter the competition as Europa League winners. Only the top five qualify for the Champions League.
09 May 2026 09:48:48
Grim, yes it's correct.
07 May 2026 21:20:47
Do we think we will see any of the youngsters for the last 3 games or will Carrick go full throttle to rubber stamp his application for the full time role? I’d quite like to see Lacey and maybe one or 2 others but I can understand if Carrick wants to go strong.
07 May 2026 22:58:40
I think he will start with a strong team, and if we are doing well, then introduce one or two u youngsters.
08 May 2026 01:11:39
When we have 3rd spot secured, he will not want any fall off in results; it won't reflect well on him.
As you say, if a game is won with 15 minds to go, then great; give a few games to the younger guys to see how they cope.
08 May 2026 10:16:06
A win tomorrow will secure 3rd place. The remaining two games can be used to blood youngsters and rotate the squad for the upcoming WC.
Hopefully this happens. Players like Thwaites and Lacey, getting adequate minutes, will not only aid their development but provide an insight as to whether they can step up next season and perhaps shift their focus when it comes to recruitment this summer.
I wonder if Zirkzee will get minutes over Obi, or perhaps Bruno will be rested if 3rd place is secured, and Zirkzee will replace him?
Ideally, 3rd place is secured and 2-3 youngsters step up.
08 May 2026 11:03:20
I'm all for giving the youngsters some minutes, and I certainly think we have some very talented ones capable, but I would also be setting the team up to win all the remaining games. The team needs to maintain that habit of winning, and the feeling of winning.
08 May 2026 11:43:49
Thwaites is miles off. Has good potential, but I don't think he will be close to playing EPL games this year or next.
07 May 2026 20:37:15
If we sell players and bring in £100M, we should be able to spend £400M, unless we give them all 10 year contracts in which case we can spend £800M as we can amortize their fees over a longer period.
However, if we offset the cost of mowing the pitch, cleaning the car park and washing the kits, and give 20 year contracts, we can spend £1 trillion. Things are looking up.
07 May 2026 21:15:45
It's been reported that Sir Jim plans on buying the whole PSG squad for £3tr.
07 May 2026 22:50:37
I thought the 10yr contracts were no longer allowed, as it was a clear piss take.
07 May 2026 23:00:02
I heard Wilcox met Mbappe and got him to sign a contract on the back of fag packet
