Great win last night and a brilliant performance.
I made a few observations that I'd like to hear peoples opinons on.
Shaw is still a top tier left back if fitness could stay with him
Martinez needs to stay fit our best defender
Cas and ugarte together stops our midfield being walked through
Mount was really good we missed him when he went off (imagine Bruno in that ten position)
Sesko needs a goal badly.

Martinez is awesome, if he could string a long run together he would have a major impact.

I think the chnage in formation helps our midfield, and would really do so wh3n we have Bruno as a CM.

Sesko is a strange one, he looks like he has huge potemtial, but as you say, he needs a goal.

First time poster
Been reading here for ever.
Great win last night. Great team effort.
Still i am now more sure than ever that Yoro and Dalot can't play on the same side. They don't trust each other. You could see that last night and against Villa. Plus they are compulsive ball watchers and rarely watch the player they are supposed to mark.

Was at the game last night. I think your assessment is spot on John. I'd add that Cunha was unbelievably good in the first half. Dorgu looked brilliant all game. Second half we lacked enough players to put their foot on the ball and take control. Ugarte positionally is poor - both in and out of possession. Also Dalot is shockingly bad. Just a glaring weakness.

We desperately need to get reinforcements for both the right and left flanks. I'm not a fan of Dalot anyway but last night it was blatantly obvious how many things he does badly.
It was a fortunate win but we've had a lot of games we deserved more out of go against us, so I'm delighted. A couple of smart reinforcements and we can be a really good side.

Cunha is brilliant donred proper player
Dalot and ugarte definitely weak links if we're going back 4 I think mazraoui would be brilliant at right back we are very short in midfield.

I thought in the first Ugaurte played well and worked well with Case.

Dorgu played unbelievably well, especially on the RW. The first half was a joy to behold. The team looked an played with confidence.

It really was a game of two halves. After the break and Mount not coming back on, Utd looked different. Then they changed to 3 at the back.

Heaven and Martinez were fantastic yesterday.

I thought Sesko looked far better with Mount behind him. I think he needs a player to link with, play one-twos, and make runs off the playmaker. He was getting in good positions during the first half, and overall the team looked far more comfortable in the 4-5-1.

I think too many are pushing their own preferences for the formation. Amorim feels 3-4-3 is the best one to allow most flexibility. The interview with Glasner on Sky Sports articulated it very well. Right now Amorim thinks we don't have the personnel for that formation and has adapted the set up. That's great to see. But I fully expect him to go back to 3-4-3 when the Afcon players return - in most games anyway.

I'd disagree that the team looks more comfortable in 4-5-1. We were very lucky yesterday. In any formation we have to play weak players and that's what's undermining us right now. What Amorim has shown now is that he recognises the need to use the formation that minimises those weak points.

I don't have a preference per se, I just wanted to see some flexibility instead of always insisting only 1 way could work.

Welcome Zanred!
Good result and performance.
So pleased to be back at back 4 and appreciate we have 5 at the back knowledge now too.

Lammens, solid. Heaven, very accomplished, Martinez, top quality, Shaw better at LB, Dorgu, improving.

Banter please Ed

Sometimes we lose games we should have won, last night we won one we might perhaps have lost on another day, although for all their pressure, I didn't feel unduly worried.

What is clear is there is great spirit in the team, you could see how delighted everyone was for Dorgu, and how much they were pulling for each other.

It's also have great to have Martinez back, if he could stay fit he would be immense for us, and I love him as skipper. Some other great performances, particularly Heaven and Cunha's energy is awesome. We were short in numbers last night but secured the points, that's what we have to for the next few games.

The one concern last night was the subs. Cas didn't want to come off but the games are coming thick and fast so I maybe get that one. Zirkzee for Sesko seemed a strange one. Sesko was doing ok and Zirkzee made no impression at all. And taking off Martinez and Shaw with a few minutes left felt risky.

The most interesting thing from last night was the move to a flat back 4, giving us an extra body in the middle. I say a flat back 4, but it was more fluid than that. Whether this was a one off or an acceptance that there are other formations we shall see. I'd like to see it mixed up a little, Howe was clearly thrown and with the players we have, we are able to change it in game if needed.

3 winnable games comng up, but we've said that before haven't we 😃.

A great win ajh in a game tbh that could of went either way. I really like how we stayed compact defensively and everyone knew there job.
Nobody could deny there isn't progress.

Martinez asked to come off as he was starting to cramp up and Shaw was on a booking so, why risk going down to 10 when there is a left back on the bench. Heaven was immense last night, won all his duels, nothing got passed him. He's a snip at £1.5M.

I’ll deny there isn’t progress. 😉.

All we know for certain is that we won the game so the subs were perfect.
We don't know for certain what would have happened if he hadn't made them. We might have lost.
If he had ignored Martinez signal to come off and it cost us then we would have something to moan about.
To finish the game with 3 20 yo cbs and young fletcher in midfield along with malacia who hasn't played for the 1st team since god knows when bodes well imo.
We are seeing a developing resilience in the team.

Im loving cunhas warrior like personality. He just gets it imo and looks like he can become our main man. If I were his team mate i'd be looking over at him thinking I'm happy to go into the trenches with him.
Results will be sketchy and inconsistent for a while longer put the foundations in terms of work ethic and culture are being laid and that will bring success on the pitch overtime.
We have the right leaders in place to make the more right decions than wrong. Follow the leaders.

27 Dec 2025 13:00:41
Whatever the reasons, we got the job done, whilst being seriously undermanned, that augers well.

You make a good point ken, we have lacked real passionate leaders, but in Cunha and Martinez we have 2 of the best.

Another few games to get through being short handed, but all very winnable games.

We battled yesterday. True club performance where the next man up mentality was there for us all to see. Was frustrated by zirkzee, but I just think he is rusty and also unhappy that he might not get to go. He still fought at defensive end like all the others did.

How we played, formations etc is a pointless conversation. We fought and won.

Happy christmas.

Zirkzee was awful last night. He lost every header. He looked at the defenders and tried backing into them. Hopefully a move to Roma materialises ASAP.

Not good enough in this league imo the epl doesn't suit his skill set. Poor signing.

Looks like Semenyo is bound to go to City.

 2

23 Dec 2025 20:48:35
Midfield should be our priority. We need a proper defensive midfielder.

 2

23 Dec 2025 20:54:19
Looks like it, and to be honest who can blame him. They are pretty much guaranteed to challenge for all honours every year.

 3

24 Dec 2025 10:13:06
Cant blame him, walking straight into a title battle and later stages of the champions league is an enticing proposition.

Also probably one of the easier city sides to break into as a wide forward compared with when they had Mahrez, Sterling and Sane.

We got a couple of good deals in the summer with Mbuemo and Cunha when there was less competition for their signing considering their qualityso need to find more of those in the summer.

I’m not saying don’t rate Semenyo because I do but I am struggling to see the hype.

He’s 25 and at the top of his game, playing in a system that plays to his style.

There’s perhaps another level to come from him but I just see him as a solid player.

I’d be happy if we signed him but would see it as raising the floor not the ceiling. Whereas Olise looked like someone who’d have done both.

Every big club wants him. I can see him doing well at Liverpool or Chelsea too.

I’m kind of confused myself. What am I missing?

Perhaps what I’m saying is I don’t see magic but I see a system player who’s consistently 7-8/10 weekly.

It maybe naive but I’d go for Vinicius Jr if I wanted a LW and work back from his level/availability.

 1

23 Dec 2025 17:37:20
I see him as a Nuno Mendes type. I think he's absolutely perfect for us. On the right we see Amad and Mbeumo interchange position a lot. If we'd this on the left we'd be really strong. Semenyo ranks very highly in duels, tackles, and you can see his workrate is very high.

A wingback role would suit him really well. I can also see scenarios where Cunha, Mbeumo and Semenyo are the front 3.

 2

23 Dec 2025 19:41:52
Appears from Ornstein that Semenyo has chosen City. Disappointing but I find it hard to summon respect for players making that sort of choice. Anyway we move on, and I hope we do get reinforcements in this January.

 1

23 Dec 2025 20:57:36
I think he would be tailor-made for this United side, quick, strong, plays on the front foot, and capable of playing anywhere across the front line or at wingback in our system.

He'd be a beast, and he's getting better and better every year. But alas he'll go to City and I expect he'll do great things there. Like signings before him he might take a season or so to settle into Peps system, but I think he'll do great there.

 4

23 Dec 2025 22:02:17
Hmmm I’m still not convinced or convinced he’s Wing Back but I’d love us to be in a position that Semenyo was the level of cover/back up.

23 Dec 2025 17:09:46
As Ed001has said we must have other priorities surely. If we could get a CDM it would even allow Bruno push forward giving us lots of attacking options.

Appreciate this post and thought provoking.

IMO I’d borrow and lend as much as possible. I hear from a FFP view we can spend over £700M.

I’d sell Dalot, Shaw, Dorgu, Ugarte, Maguire, De Ligt, Casemiro plus loans Hojlund, Rashford etc.

Sack the 5221 and go 433.

And sign:
GK - Vitelli back from Loan
CB - Guehi, Silva
LB - Seys
RB - Liveramento
CM - Wharton, Anderson, Neves
LW - Yildez/Paz/Diomande
CF - Alvarez.
