According to the press talks are progressing with both torres and varane. Clearly we will only be looking to sign one of them and i was wondering who the preference would be?

Allan

1.) 25 Jun 2021 19:58:08
Varane 100%, especially as Maguire prefers to play on the left, where Torres plays.

{Ed014's Note - buy both get rid of the fridge. Simple

2.) 25 Jun 2021 19:45:07
Id say varane
Joel glazer wants the cheaper
Maguire wants neither he doesn't speak Spanish or French
Ole's preference is to bring japp stam back.

3.) 25 Jun 2021 20:27:38
There will be 4 or 5 very good CB's available this summer, Varane though is the only "world class" one available.

We have loads of players with potential, players who are 2-3 years away from hitting their peak.

We need a top class CB now, not two year time, not next year, now.

Varane is the best available, and apparently is interested in signing. Just go out and get him.

4.) 25 Jun 2021 20:58:49
I'd sign both and sell Maguire.

5.) 26 Jun 2021 08:52:18
Why would we get rid of Maguire?
It’s his price tag that has turned people against him but I remain convinced that we’d have won the EL final if he’d been fit. You only needed to watch the England game the other night to see his positive influence on the national side, too. Both United and England look far, far more secure with Maguire in the side.
Varane’s pace and calmness alongside Maguire would mean we have two centre halves good in the air, good one the ball and compliment one another. It’s imperative we get him IMO.

6.) 26 Jun 2021 13:28:15
Downsie53,

He is slow, gets turned easily, his positional awareness can be poor, he often isn't found in the box when it matters as on the break he can't get back in to defend.

I just don't rate as a great defender. Maguire playing in the EL wouldn't have made a massive difference riven we have OGS as manager.

7.) 26 Jun 2021 23:05:39
To play alongside Maguire I would sign Kounde.

8.) 27 Jun 2021 03:35:56
Mad,

But to say all that. Did england and man utd look significantly better with him in the team or out of it? He is far better than everyone likes to say on here.

9.) 27 Jun 2021 11:32:38
Dodgy,

He is our best defender, but that isn't saying much. When you compare him to the best CBs in the world he isn't anywhere near them.

10.) 27 Jun 2021 15:55:41
I would hijack ben white deal.

06 Aug 2015 07:48:50
Could someone explain to me why, despite being seeded, we face potentially tricky CL opposition including a couple of real banana skins in monaco and lazio whereas celtic who aren't seeded will be facing 1 of 5 real minnows. Am i missing something?

Allan

1.) 06 Aug 2015 10:57:38
Seeding is based on the European co-efficient worked out by how well the team has done in previous years. Monaco are a relatively new team to the CL so they haven't got a good rating in the comp and Lazio haven't been in it for years so their rating has dropped.

2.) 06 Aug 2015 11:15:47
There is a different route for Champions of lesser nations thatln there is for the 4th place teams from bigger nations. I believe it's well explained on United's site and a few other places on the web.

3.) 06 Aug 2015 11:42:27
i think a match against fenerbahce would be nice.

4.) 06 Aug 2015 12:08:38
I wondered this last night as well but from what I can see is the last qualifying stage is divided by 'Champion Seeds' and 'League Seeds'

Hence Celtic being Scottish champions they are seeded differently.

Wes369 - Fenerbahce were knocked out last night

5.) 06 Aug 2015 12:16:07
Monaco would be very tricky as they are playing very well in pre season and have talented players. The only club in the French league who could get anywhere near PSG.
On a lighter note DIMARIA saying how happy he is to play for PSG. Wont be happy when playing in some cold corner of Brittany in a 10 000 seater stadium against not even championship level sides. that's what he calls ambition

6.) 06 Aug 2015 12:25:06
Looking at the teams we can play there is a chance we may not make the group stages. , what happens then ?

7.) 06 Aug 2015 12:50:10
We play in the Europa league.

Teams who won their respective leagues have a different qualifying side of the draw to us, we are up against teams that finished lower in the leagues but qualify due to the country getting the extra place. None of the 5 teams will want to draw Manchester United. I would think club Brugge or rapid Vienna would be our best options with Moscow being the worst.

8.) 06 Aug 2015 13:00:57
Bring it on, whoever we get. 😉

9.) 06 Aug 2015 13:59:35
In order to be champions you must beat champions. Bring on anyone!

I hope that the varane transfer won't turn into another saga. We want the player and the player seems open to the move so let's get the deal done and move on. He is still only 28, has won pretty much everything and is regarded as one of the worlds best so imo even if we end up having to pay an extra 10m we would still be getting a massive bargain.

Ps i await the Shappython and will be counting the words ! Haha only in jest.

Allan

1.) 23 Jul 2021 17:01:00
It's simple, United don't do easy. Varane want's to join, personal terms won't be a problem, and he is one of the very few genuinely world class players who'll be available. He plays in a position of serious need, and his skillset seems to almost perfectly match what we need. Add to that we don't seem to have any serious competition for his signature.

All this adds up to possibly one of the most obvious transfers possible. It's a no brainer and in my opinion would be more transformative to our side than Sancho.

It's the transfer equivalent of a one yard tap in dead centre of the goal with no opponent in the way to win the world cup in the last minute of extra time.

It just normally doesn't happen, but the stars have aligned for us to pull off one of the best signings of the summer.

So right on queue United start being silly over what amounts to about 5m, dragging the transfer out and placing it at risk for little to no reason.

Instead of just tapping the ball home they have decided to flick it up and do some keepie uppies with the hope of heading it home in some fancy sort of way.

Typical amateur behaviour, they may yet conspire to balls this up. I hope they won't and hopefully they can come to their senses and wrap this deal up quickly. As that is what benefits the team, the manager, the player and ultimately the club in general most.

2.) 23 Jul 2021 17:01:43
That’s the thing though, we won’t pay the extra 10 million, we have a value and so do Madrid and if the past has taught us anything it’s that doing business with real is v difficult. I expect this one to run on and on, Pity because it would be in everyone’s interest to get him in and up to speed before the season starts!

3.) 23 Jul 2021 17:14:48
Give them £40 million and Dalot who they may be interested in.

{Ed077's Note - Am I the only one that things keeping Dalot as back-up to AW-B is makes more sense than buying Trippier to perform that role?

Also would RM be interested in Dalot??}

4.) 23 Jul 2021 17:43:45
We need to sell dalot imo ed077.
I'd take trippier in a heart beat we should have signed him when he went to Madrid.
Dalot is a decent player but not a very robust or astute defender its also best not to rely on a frequently injured player to be a back up. We've seen that with Jones. Not a good fit for the epl.
As for madrids interest its probably conjecture based on Everton interest eject CA was coach.
If that had interest it would be a lovely sweetener but would not look good on our books.

{Ed077's Note - fair enough ken. I just think Dalot hasnt had a fair chance to prove himself at Man Utd, although you might be right in saying he might not be physically suited to PL footy.}

5.) 23 Jul 2021 17:59:43
But to answer your question I know for sure your not alone in thinking its a good idea and that he could prove himself.

6.) 23 Jul 2021 18:00:31
Agree 100 % I believe varane at 50m is an absolute bargain and exactly what we need. Chellini and bonucci are both pensioners compared to varane so we could have him for maybe 6 or 7 years before he starts showing signs of ageing. If i had a spare 10m i would donate it to the club too get the deal done. Remember the season starts in 3 yes 3 weeks!

7.) 23 Jul 2021 18:33:25
Dalot could be one of those where he just does not fit with the manager, for whatever reason. There are lots including Anchelotti who think he has real potential and with a high ceiling and as such he will get interest even if it is loan only.
Trippier I see the logic of as he can cover RB/ LB and WB in a 3 at the back whilst also not restricting Wan Bisakas growth.
If it happens it will be later in the window and at much more palatable figure.

24 Aug 2020 16:41:41
Am I alone in thinking that we should just walk away from the sancho deal. We don't want to pay what dortmund want nor what his agents wants or the player himself wants all of which suggest that a deal is unlikely.
For a lot less money we could target for example Brooks and one out of say Costa or dembele any 2 of which would be an improvement on pereira and mata wide on the right as well as strenghthening our squad. With the couple of sales we would also have sufficient monies to make a third signing should the right player become available.
My worry is that we spend the next few weeks focusing on sancho only and then end up scrambling for players at the end of the transfer window and after next season has already started.

Allan

1.) 24 Aug 2020 17:45:21
I agree that it is time to stop pursuing Sancho.
I think we should try for some or all of the following:-

Brooks of Bournemouth who has a flexibility and agility we need.
Adama Traore who can play on either wing
Grealish of Villa who can influence a game.
Rice of West Ham as a defensive midfield option
Tarkowski as an extra defender
Alaba as an attacking fullback option.
Scmeichel as a goal keeping alternative

At least we will be guaranteed quality players with PL Experience.

2.) 24 Aug 2020 17:51:02
I see the situation like this.

Sancho is clearly a top level talent, and he is English which always adds a premium. Havertz looks like going for 100m and Sancho has outperformed him over the last two seasons, so I think Dortmund have every right to expect 100m+ for Sancho.

The club now need to make a decision, if Sancho is the one they want and they can afford the 120m+ which Dortmund are fairly asking for then do it, stop messing around and get the deal done.

If the club can't afford or are unwilling to pay the asking price then walk away and start working on other deals.

Either way a decision needs to be made ASAP, alternative targets are being snapped up. There are no bargains for top level talent available in the last week or two of the window.

The teams that handle their transfer business best often have deals lined up before the season has finished. Chelsea signing Ziyech in January this year and Pulisic January last year. Chelsea still in the UCL when they agreed Werner. Bayern agreeing a deal for Sane before their season had ended.

3.) 24 Aug 2020 18:19:43
Yeah I don't understand what the negotiation is all about if Dortmund are adamant on price. We are just wasting precious time and energy. Move on and get an alternative if we can't afford it. If coman is available and wants to come then get it done even if it's a loan. I'd even take perisic for a couple of years he would definitely improve us and is still a very good player he's proved that in the champions league knock out stages. We need depth in quality. If there's a player out there who improves us whether they are surplus to requirements it shouldn't matter it's all about being shrewd in the market!

4.) 24 Aug 2020 18:34:44
Im reading Bayern are saying Coman is going nowhere- but I take your point .

5.) 24 Aug 2020 19:05:14
When you say walk away - that would imply we have entered into negotiations- which we have not as have submitted no bid!

6.) 24 Aug 2020 19:46:18
Dont know if i'm the only one but none of the alternatives suggested for sancho seem goods buys in my opinion.

Chiesa, coman, brooks etc. Unless there's an alternative out there that i'm missing, it looks really bare in terms of forward positions outside of sancho.

That being said wouldn't mind bringing wilf zaha back to the club, can play on both sides, good enough to start in the prem but not good enough to have his nose out of joint if mason greenwood takes up his game time.

7.) 24 Aug 2020 20:48:44
There are plenty of players out there just don't have shiny clubs buendia, Saint maximum and suso have been decent this season just not names the papers can sell story's with as much as a sancho.

8.) 24 Aug 2020 22:11:31
DSG, there are plenty of options. Just very few who are as big a name as Sancho at the moment. He's had a couple of excellent years playing for the second best team in a fairly poor league. While many of the other options have been playing either in tougher leagues and/ or for much poorer sides.

While a great player will still produce good performances in a poor side, the absolute level of those performances will be adversely effected by the quality of his teammates.

If you don't receive quality balls, well timed and in good areas of the pitch then what you can do when you receive that ball will be limited.

9.) 24 Aug 2020 22:30:50
I’d definitely take Zaha back.
Depay if he can grow up too.

Loaned out a perfectly good RW in Chong.

10.) 24 Aug 2020 23:40:00
Eric sorry but our lass is a better winger than Chong!
I know he is a kid but he’s as strong as a weatherspoons ale and his butcher is a vegan . He is nowhere near epl standard in fact championship defenders would carve him in two.

11.) 24 Aug 2020 23:49:27
You make it seem like the transfer people wake up every morning and go to talk to Dortmund about Sancho, all day everyday. There's got to be more to transfers than that surely.

15 Jul 2020 15:19:09
A sad quirk of the fixtures meaning that Chelsea have 6 days to prepare for the semi final we have 3. Similarly Leicester have a week to prepare for possibly our most important league fixture again we have 3. So for the games either side of the semi final which way does ole jump, start with the strongest team available and hope that the game is won after an hour so that subs can then be made or start with a weaker team hoping they can get the job done leaving the likes of Bruno on the bench in the hope that the game can be won without him. Personally I would say win the game first and then rest who you can for as long as you can .

Allan

{Ed002's Note - You sound like a Liverpool fan - it is indeed a conspiracy.}

1.) 15 Jul 2020 16:39:54
Luck of the draw, we have been fortunate with the spacing of our games up to this point so we can’t complain, others have already played Thursday-Sunday, Monday-Thursday now it’s our turn. Let’s see how we cope🤷‍♂️.

2.) 15 Jul 2020 16:54:51
Lol utd fan for56 years hate the team at the other end of the m62 with passion .

3.) 15 Jul 2020 16:57:47
Bloody sods the FA, how dare they conspire and make footballers on more a week than I get in 5 years play 3 games in 8 days and do some training. Next thing you tell me is they will have to cancel their Gym Memberships and bring their own lunch to work? Maybe also pay £10 a day parking?

4.) 16 Jul 2020 10:25:03
Ole will have worked out a plam to cope with the fixture pile up. I expect that he will play a modified version of his cup team against Chelski with Romero, Dalot, Bailly, Mctominay, Fred, James and Ighalo getting starts. The league is more inportant than the Cup as CL qualification is vital in order to attract sponsorship and the right quality of player when the Transfer Window opens.

25 Jun 2020 10:15:05
Everyone is focused on us catching Chelsea but what about Leicester? After Chelsea this weekend they're left with away matched at arsenal Everton and spurs and home matches with Sheffield palace and last day of the season ourselves. With that run in in it wouldn't surprise me if both ourselves and Chelsea catch them.

Allan

{Ed002's Note - The Chelsea game is of no relevance.}

1.) 25 Jun 2020 10:33:57
The Chelsea game is a cup game, while it has no relevance in terms of where either side finish in the league, it may impact confidence and form.

Chelsea have narrowly beaten Villa and have City tonight.

While Leicester have drawn against both Watford and Brighton, both of which are relegation candidates.

For Leicester a win against Chelsea will lift their spirits and raise confidence. While a loss could further dent them.

2.) 25 Jun 2020 10:46:23
its the FA cup weekend allan,

but they do have some tough games, we have a decent run in but teams fighting for survival are never easy,

we might benefit with there being no fans to spur them on,

3.) 25 Jun 2020 10:55:02
Allan,

Have you read the page, you say everyone is focussed on us catching Chelsea but it’s been said a number of times over the past week that we have a great chance of catching Leicester. Their form pre and post C.V. has been poor and 2 games a week will not help them.

Wolves and united have had to cope with Thursday - Sunday games for a lot of the season and have squads that can just about cope but have meant some league results have suffered as a consequence, now everybody is in the same boat and Europe isn’t getting in the way it will be interesting to see if the experience of playing them 2 games a week gives an advantage over teams like Leicester. It already seems to have done with Sheff United who are in free fall.

27 May 2019 12:22:51
There is no doubt that a new CB should be top of our priorities this transfer window and i tend to agree with Ed that's mdl is not it. He may turn out to be a great centre half in 5 years time but to expect a 19 year old to be our defensive kingpin having never played in the premiership would be a big risk.
I know I will get pelters for this but I still believe that we should be targeting maguire. He is premiership battle hardened and with the amount of international football he is going to be playing in the next few years he is only going to improve especially having a former international centre back as his manager. At mid 20s he is the right age and I just can't understand why people say that he might be good enough for England but he isn't good enough for utd.
I recently had a look at a 10 min YouTube clip of jaou Felix. No doubt that he is a skilful player but in my view he looks a bit of a skinny 19 year old who, like depay, might struggle to adapt to the intensity of the premiership. Again therefore I think that meeting the asking price of 105 million would be a huge risk and that better and less risky value could be held elsewhere.

Allan

1.) 27 May 2019 14:44:10
Allan, i could not disagree more. Have you actually seen de Ligt play and lead? He is absolutely made for our league. Even jaap Stam has said that, and he knows a thing or two about central defence.
De Ligt is head and shoulders above all central defenders bar vvd, Ramos, Verane and Alderweild. Ramos and Alderweild are in their 30s leaving de Ligt as the best defender around.
In 2 years, he'll be the best.

2.) 27 May 2019 14:46:44
Because no one seriously expects England to challenge. The world cup was a total fluke borne by the fact that the only good team we played won both games.

3.) 27 May 2019 14:49:28
Also, joào Felix is already better than any attack minded midfielder around. It makes me laugh when i read that players are not bulky or strong enough for PL. It reminds me of players in 70s and 80s. Times have changed. Silva and Silva at City, Salah at Liverpool, Erickson at Spurs. Non of these are body builders, yet they are the best players in the PL. You don't need to be built like Fellaini to compete in PL, in fact, the opposite is true.

4.) 27 May 2019 15:38:05
AAA totally agree

We need agile players with guts and guile who can beat a man and cross the fe**** ball.

5.) 27 May 2019 15:50:10
Joao Felix along with Sancho and Vinicius Jr are probably the best attacking prospects in world football under the age of 20.

IMO Maguire struggles against pace and mobile attackers most of the time. His main strengths are areal duels and being comfortable on the ball.
For a reported 65m plus fee, we need a commanding established CB like Koulibaly or a top prospect like De Ligt who can offer more than a decade of service.

6.) 27 May 2019 17:16:20
Reddevilfan, we've been making the mistake of buying big players for years, Fellaini, Pogba, Lukaku, Matic. These kind of players do not have any versatility, they're being found out in our league as more technically gifted and smaller players are running rings round them. The future cannot be about buying big bulky players in midfield and attack, we need clever, gifted players who can create goals and turn in tight spaces.

7.) 27 May 2019 17:18:00
I'd maybe go Alderweireld for a short term fix. Bring on Tuanzebe. Try for de Ligt or look for an alternative.

8.) 27 May 2019 18:53:07
Two of Rojo, Bailly, Smalling and Jones need to be sold before we go in for Alderweireld although I’d take de Ligt and him in a heartbeat with Axel and Lindelof.

9.) 27 May 2019 23:10:06
A name that hasn’t come up is Kristopher Ajer he plays for Celtic and still quite young but also a very good centre back with good ability on the ball. Think at 6ft 5 he will win some headers too.

10.) 28 May 2019 05:07:21
Ajer is norweigian, and if any good norweigian players comes up I believe Ole would be the first to know.

Good post dlib. City have lost a host of league games this year and are 20 points worse off than last year and have just been outplayed by arsenal. Do we see mass hysteria? Sack pep? players not good enough? No we don't. If I had said after the Burnley defeat that with 2 league games to go CL qualification would be in our hands I would have been laughed off this site. We are looking a little fatigued which is why the team and the manager need all our support not relentless criticism for losing a game which wasn't in the grand scheme of things particularly important.

I can't believe some people think that the way forward is to pay a 36 year old 1m pound a week . No doubt the city's lawyers and accountants will be getting ready for another visit from the ffp people.
