Does anyone think we should have a look at Goretkza? He's a free agent, and he could add some valuable experience to this squad. Not saying he would be a started, but as 1 of the supposed 3 CMS we are looking to add, would be a good bit of business.

Probably 4 years too late, but if he can bolster the squad I'm not hating it.

Yeah, true Jim, but he's only 31, so could still deliver for a couple of seasons. Plus, he can pass on his knowledge to some of the younger players. He's won the lot. You always need a few older heads to keep the young ones in check. As a free, I think it could be a good bit of business.

We need to churn 14+ players, and will need some free transfers this and next summer to accelerate the churn. But we also need to bolster the squad.

I like to look at the players who are expiring next summer, as there is a potential opportunity to obtain a player at a relatively low price.

Laimer, as an example, is expiring next summer and is currently in a contract dispute, so maybe he is worth a go at improving our right back position.

Wasn't he looking for crazy wages?

5.) 16 May 2026 21:59:43
I think so, Eric, if you are referring to Laimer. Although crazy wages at Bayern might be okay at Utd. Especially if we can maybe gift them Mount. ?

We've made some silly signings of older players in recent years, most of whom were mistakes, and I don't see that happening again. We need a top player, maybe 2, to replace Cas, and we need squad depth, but I hope that isn't ageing free transfers. I'll say again, Hackney would be a shrewd signing.

7.) 17 May 2026 11:27:58
Agree Ajh,
Younger players, not old ones at the tail end of their careers, are needed. Cas has been a special player, and Laimer is nowhere near as good. Ideally, we get players in the age range 23 to 26 who will be coming into their peak years, and then supplement with youth team players and bed them in for the future.

8.) 17 May 2026 11:44:12
It depends on his wages.

9.) 17 May 2026 11:45:35
Ajh,

I agree with you about Hackney. Sadly. I don't see it materialising.

Depending on wages and length of contract, as the third midfield signing to add some experience, he wouldn't be a bad signing.

Something like a two year deal with a third year option, on reasonable wages, and on the understanding that he won't necessarily be first choice (and he's happy with that).

But at his age, I'd expect he will be looking for either a massive wage or guaranteed being first choice. He's leaving Bayern, so maybe he wants both a high wage and guarantees that he'd be first choice. It's not like he'll be on low wages already.

I'd imagine if he's happy to be paid well as a back up, then he'd probably opt to stay at Bayern. The fact he's leaving suggests otherwise.

I agree that Hackney could be a really smart signing. Low fee, homegrown, and he has been the best player in the Championship this season (a league that is a good testing ground for potential EPL signings). He's also worked under Carrick before, and he has the ability to be that ball dominant, controlling midfield profile that we are missing.

11.) 17 May 2026 12:27:45
Laimer would be for right back, and he is a significant upgrade on Dalot.

12.) 17 May 2026 18:04:32
If Carrick really thought Hayden was good enough, you would have thought that, having been his manager before, he would have had an edge in signing him.

Carrick on a 2-year deal is actually a sensible choice by the club. He's come in, and results-wise we have done well, we have more points on the board than any other team since he came in, and we've beaten 7 of the top 10 teams in that time.

It gives us time to evaluate him properly and see what he's made of. In 2 years' time, there might be other managers, such as Enrique, that become available.

If it doesn't work out, we've not got to pay a long contract out.
