Ed 002,
Any truth to the rumors that we could get van de Beek? Many of the papers are saying more about Manchester United than Real Madrid for VDB lately. Thanks for all your help at this time of year.

{Ed002's Note - Donny van der Beek (AM/CM) primary target of Real Madrid but they are concerned that the price is being pushed up by the interest of other clubs - which means Barcelona could turn to van der Beek if Real Madrid push for their other target, Ruiz. Spurs have a declared interest but may not be attractive right now and would need to sell to buy. Manchester United purchased Bruno Fernandes instead but could try and squeeze him in as an alternative to Jack Grealish but he offers less. Juventus have other options as they see themselves priced out of a deal for Kai Havertz, but could revive interest in him.}

1.) 11 Jun 2020 18:10:45
Thanks Ed 002. Sounds possible then, I really admire the player.

2.) 11 Jun 2020 22:29:44
Can someone tell me what Type of player Grealish is and what he offers please? Not been convinced to date.

3.) 12 Jun 2020 10:22:53
He is a different sort of creative midfielder to Bruno. Where Bruno looks to pass and move Grealish is a runner, receiving the ball and running at the opposition with it. Often picking up lots of "fouls" (he goes down far too easily though in my opinion) . Right footed but plays either wide left on inside left, can play at No.10 but often drifts between being central and toward the left. Likes to cut in onto his right foot and shoot or lay the ball off. He could play slightly deeper in a three man midfield if it was well balanced.

He could play well in a 433 playing on the left of the midfield three with Bruno on the right and a proper DM at the base. Bruno would play slightly deeper with Grealish playing slightly higher.

4.) 12 Jun 2020 10:42:49

Do you know the fee that Villa would look to accept for Grealish. There have been various fees mentioned in the press, ranging from £40-£80 million. I suspect that if Villa were relegated, that they would be more willing to sell him to raise funds etc.

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

10 Apr 2020 16:41:44
If we do sell Pogba, any chance we could buy Milinkovic-Savic? I see the rumors on occasion, wondering if there is any truth in them. Great player. Thanks in advance.

{Ed002's Note - Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (CM) Manchester United has not shown any interest in Milinkovic-Savic this season and have been difficult with Pogba and his agent in looking to leave - and that never tooks good in the eyes of players or agents. The player will be offered to PSG but there are issues holding up commitments from them at this time. Right now it seems unlikely and the price would be about €100M to Manchester United.

1.) 10 Apr 2020 17:11:06
Thanks Ed002 for the quick answer. On we wait.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

10 Jul 2019 16:39:29
Eds, any word on Matic leaving this summer? Thanks in advance.

{Ed001's Note - not that I know of.}

1.) 10 Jul 2019 17:47:33
Thanks Ed. Critical position to fill. Matic is slowing down, and we don't have another true DCM. McTominay is a good worker defensively, but not ready to be a single pivot when we play 4-3-3. We need a mobile DCM. Ndidi would be ideal. Longstaff, if he comes, does sound like he has potential.

{Ed001's Note - it is possible to manage without one though mate.}

2.) 10 Jul 2019 18:39:24
Doesn't Longstaff have a knee injury?

3.) 11 Jul 2019 05:54:16
Ndidi is limited on the ball. Would instead prefer the improving Declan Rice or Longstaff who has good passing range.

4.) 11 Jul 2019 06:59:18
Left field but young Choudhury at Leicester looks to have real potential.

5.) 11 Jul 2019 12:03:16
good shout redman on Choudhury. I still think Ndidi though. I actually like the look Lemina. £18m is a steal.

6.) 11 Jul 2019 12:45:35
I can't see matic leaving this summer. We're already two short and pogba is likely to go as well.

17 Jun 2019 13:50:38
Any word on the Bruno Fernandes transfer? It has gone very quiet.

At least the Wan Bissaka updates remain positive.

1.) 17 Jun 2019 14:19:06
I'm fairly confident we're getting him, everything has pointed to us signing him, even if it'll be a big fee.

Good timing too as it will soften the blow of the potential departure of Pogba.

2.) 17 Jun 2019 14:46:40
Pogba needs to go. He wants to leave. I only players at the club who want to play for the club.

3.) 17 Jun 2019 17:04:57
Wouldn't say it's good news on awb. Another bid rejected. Can't see utd paying what palace want upfront.

4.) 17 Jun 2019 18:12:07
The differences between Palace and Utd on the AWB deal appear mainly to be around the initial payment and then the basis of the staged payments.
It doesn’t sound like a deal can’t be done, Utd need to offer more up front plus change the details around the performance based payments. At the end of the day £50 to 60M for AWB is reasonable on the basis he is 21 and proven in the PL. In 5 years time if he is still at the club this would look like good business.

5.) 17 Jun 2019 19:57:10
Doubt we will go again prob go for the Norwich guy now.

Can see this being a sham of a window and another season of dross.

6.) 17 Jun 2019 20:03:06
I think AWB will be the second signing. A lot of talk about Pogba, he stays - good, he leaves - I think we have planty of options in the market. But what about Lukaku, we can't rely on Rashford only, plus I think he is better on the wing. So if Lukaku leaves, I really don't see any available striker, maybe Cavanni. But that's it.

7.) 17 Jun 2019 20:37:33
This might sound daft but I genuinely think it would be a good signing. If Lukaku leaves, I'd like to see us target Salomon Rondon. That gives Rashford the chance to be number one striker for the season but also a different option if needed.

I appreciate it's hardly going to be the most popular option but if you sell Lukaku for £60m-£70m then you're saving two thirds of that to go towards another player and getting the back up striker who is a different type of player to Rashford and has scored goals in the Premier League. Kind of similar move to Spurs buying Llorente or Chelsea signing Giroud.

8.) 17 Jun 2019 20:51:28
Rondon are you serious rj we have enough strikers who can't score. we have really become a laughing stock.

9.) 17 Jun 2019 21:13:42
Yeah I am serious, I think Rondon is a pretty good player. Like I said it isn't going to be the most popular opinion but it's fairly low risk, Rashford would be free to be number one striker, Martial is there as well as a 2nd choice but Rondon would offer a different option. He has played in the Premier League for a while and maybe he would be happy with the chance to move to a club like United? He also scored more league goals than both Martial and Rashford last season.

The option we are looking at to replace Lukaku in the update the Ed gave was Sebastian Haller. Is he better than Rondon? Probably but I've not seen enough of him to say for definite. Probably far more expensive as well.

10.) 17 Jun 2019 22:05:52
If Pogba goes and he is replaced with let's say Bruno Fernandes, Rabiot and AWB for the same money then I think it's good business. Look what Liverpool have done, especially with the Coutinho money. It's about building a team, not having a couple of superstars. Pogba is the icing on the cake we don't need right now, that will hopefully come in a couple of years when we have a hard working settled team. Hopefully.

11.) 17 Jun 2019 22:42:16
i find it odd how players linked with united aren't trying to force a transfer like monsieur Pogba is trying to do, are things really that bad at United that players such as AWB and Harry Maguire aren't looking for a challenge?

12.) 17 Jun 2019 23:57:16
I wonder if Ed Woodward has shares in SkyBet? they seem to just work on one transfer at a time and literally drag out the whole process.

09 Jun 2017 13:37:31
It sounds like the Morata deal is happening. I think he will be a good addition. He is young, mobile, technical, intelligent, has good size, and has performed well at both Juventus and Real Madrid.

1.) 09 Jun 2017 13:55:06
225 k a week being reported. saying belotti asked for griezeman salary of 300k . maybe tabloid nonsense.

Timing of the Morata news if confirmed might take some of the sting out of Ibra moving on for some people if its announced -

Dont know much about Morata or Belotti to be honest.

My choice would be amyadingdong but that's not likely, only as I've been impressed with him each time I've seen him -some say he is a flaky character though.

2.) 09 Jun 2017 14:09:59
I seem to get the feeling we're in for both of them not just one or the other.

Has Morata been known to play out wide or is he just a central striker?

3.) 09 Jun 2017 14:13:13
Is there a sting from Zlatan moving on? He is injured until the new year and slowed down our attack all year, he had a good season for us goals wise but we would be absolutely mad to give him a new deal IMO.

4.) 09 Jun 2017 14:23:52
Dave, I would love it if United went for both the players, but I don't think that would happen. What makes you say that?

5.) 09 Jun 2017 14:43:32
Hi. not been on here for ages, Still a few that I recognise.
I just wanted to agree with GDS2.
I can't fault Ibra for the season he had but I felt he did slow our attack down a lot of the time.
I also think he's a very big personality in the dressing room and noticed that he was pulling rank over players when taking free kicks and penalties.
He's not going to be fit until the new year and it makes no sense paying someone 300 grand a week for the remainder of that season. Definitely time to move him on now
In my opinion we need a top centre forward, a top central defensive midfielder so the shackles can be taken off Pogba and let him get forward more.
We also need another centre back.

6.) 09 Jun 2017 14:47:41

Nothing really just a feeling. There's some reports stating Morata is close and ed002 has said we have a 3rd party involved in trying to secure a deal for belotti

So 2+2 = 5 probably 😂.

7.) 09 Jun 2017 14:52:46
No sting from me GDS2,but I saw more than a few on here yesterday saying he still had a part to play - i say thank you and get him off wage bill.

8.) 09 Jun 2017 14:59:53
I'm not one for worrying about the money the club spends but around £70m for a player who was worth £26m only 12 months ago and has sat on the bench since, seems ridiculous.

9.) 09 Jun 2017 15:12:19
Makes sense to go for 2 forwards with Ibra leaving. A replacement for him plus one more.

10.) 09 Jun 2017 15:20:12
Hahah! Yeah. I thought maybe you knew something that none of us did.

I hope we do get them both. It would be quite a solid front line.

Love the math! :D.

11.) 09 Jun 2017 15:25:32
I've seen a few reports that we're in for both. Seems a bit odd but with Zlatan and Rooney both seemingly off, it would do no harm in having 2 new forwards come in.
Belotti is an out and out no.9 but Morata has a bit more to his game so not identical signings.

12.) 09 Jun 2017 16:48:47
I'd prefer the one. Simply because I believe it means more playing time for rash. Unless Jose is looking for a different formation where both belotti and morata play together. But I can't see that happening.

13.) 09 Jun 2017 17:52:30
Welcome back Simo, love when some familiar names from the past come back on here, hope all is well. I remember we didn't agree on much in the past, a rest must have done you some good ;)

I wouldn't mind if we signed both Belotti and Morata if that is even an option. If we are losing zlatan and Rooney then no reason why we don't replace both of them and they are 2 players who could be brilliant for us.

Wasn't many of us moaning in 99 when we had Yorke, Cole, Solskjaer and Teddy, I wouldn't be moaning if our striker options turned out to be Morata, Rashford, Belotti and Martial, we have plenty of games to rotate. Not saying it will happen but it wouldn't annoy me if it did. Obviously not at the expense of other positions we need though, so I am guessing it will be one or the other.

14.) 09 Jun 2017 17:53:36
Welcome back simo👍
Id rather sign morata and buy greizman in jan.

15.) 09 Jun 2017 18:48:23
i wouldn't rule out a short contract if Zlatan can get fit by January 2018.

16.) 09 Jun 2017 18:54:31
Zidaniel, he has good size. 🙄.

17.) 09 Jun 2017 19:12:50
Exactly right the more we have to choose from the better. Rashford started lots of games last season and his goal return was not amazing.
Lots of potential and talent but we can't wait forever for him to be the player we require.

I remember once somebody saying what a great player Cleverly will become! There are many more to add to that list but no point as we all know who they are.
Just saying that Manchester United should not be sitting by hoping youngsters come good while other teams take the top players on and win the awards.

For the record i love Rashford and would be absolutley delighted if he scored a shitload next season and became a top player.

18.) 09 Jun 2017 21:50:43
Get them both in and switch to a diamond 442. Enough game time for them and Rashford to play upfront.

19.) 10 Jun 2017 12:05:45
To be honest, it is not surprising that Man United released Zlatan at the moment. However, when he is fit, I would not rule out Zlatan getting a contract like Valdes.

20.) 11 Jun 2017 12:25:56

Morata was worth a lot more than 25 mil mate even last year and you confuse a buyback clause to market value. He is mobile, really smart with his runs, good finisher and can set up goals and 24 years old. In this market very hard to get strikers like that. hope we get it done early.

Lukaku at 90 is what i don't want us to ever go near. Hope Chelsea buys him as it is a poor mans version of Costa at double the price :)

Wolves likely to play a 3-5-2 next week. Do you prefer Ole sticks with the 4-2-3-1 or plays a 4-3-3?

I think in possession, as long as McTominay sits deeper and is prepared for the moment when we lose possession, he can help out the CBs so they can avoid a 2 v 2 situation.

Thoughts for how we set up next week?

1.) 12 Aug 2019 20:21:13
No need to change a winning team.

2.) 12 Aug 2019 20:24:57
Agree Ole but i wouldn't start Pereira.

3.) 12 Aug 2019 20:37:57
How about Fred in midfield and Pogba at 10?

{Ed047's Note - Downing Steet, Rillington Place?

4.) 12 Aug 2019 23:01:29
Would stick with the same team but ask Perreira to sit a bit deeper.

5.) 13 Aug 2019 07:16:32
Pereira can’t start against Wolves, they will take the ball off him far too easily.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Matic start to just sit in front of the back two and not venture too far forward, he’s more disciplined than Fred and we need that against Wolves. McT to the side of him and Pogba pushed further forward where he will get away with the mistakes.

Rashford, Martial and Jesse/ James front 3.

6.) 13 Aug 2019 07:29:32
I'd like to see Greenwood on the right side of attack.
He is a goal threat and his direct running will cause problem for their defence.
Lingard at no 10.
Again James off the bench would be another huge threat.

7.) 13 Aug 2019 08:13:38
I'd stick with the 4231, but move Jessie in field to the No.10 position and bring Greenwood in on the right.

Andreas Pereira never got into the game against Chelsea. I think I read somewhere he made 11 passes in the 73 minutes he was on the pitch. He didn't do enough to get himself into the game, he needed to drop deeper and help out our midfield, put a few tackles in or at the very least sit on Jorginho and stop him being able to pass out from the base of Chelsea's midfield. He did very little of any of that.

Jessie might not.

8.) 13 Aug 2019 08:15:46
Sent too soon.

Jesse might not be a world class talent, but he is hard working, and he reads the game well. He marks and harasses players, he makes clever off the ball runs and he has a habit of scoring important goals.

Personally I think he is probably our best bet for the No.10 position our of the options we have available.

{Ed0333's Note - I think Jesse li Garda is grossly overrated mate and I’m honestly saying that objectively. I think you have some fabulous players I just don’t think he’s one of them. I’m not saying he’s not got talent but not as much as the majority of united fans think.

9.) 13 Aug 2019 19:52:07
I think Jesse is a limited player but what he does do well is make runs past the striker. This would give Martial a bit more space in and around the box. I think Martial's best attribute is his finishing too.

10.) 13 Aug 2019 08:55:18
Ed0333, Although Lingard is not that great, he is a useful squad player.
He runs his socks off, links up play well but his end product is questionable at times.

{Ed0333's Note - for me he hasn’t fulfilled the early promise he showed when he first broke into the United team. To busy banging instragam models and inventing goal dances. If he put as much effort into his on field antics as much as his off field you’d have some player there mate.

11.) 13 Aug 2019 09:36:18
Ed0333, Jesse plays either RW or No.10 both are positions nearly every United fan would say we need strengthening in. So I don't think most United fans think Jesse should be first choice. He is a great squad option though.

My point is that put of our current options to play at No.10 Jesse probably is our best bet.

Mata is too slow for a pressing game.

Andreas Pereira hasn't done well when given a chance there.

Angel Gomes is a talent but lacks experience, he needs games this season but its probably not a good idea to throw him into key games against top four rivals just yet.

Which leaves Lingard. I think Gomes might be first choice come May. But at this moment we need to pick and choose which games he plays carefully.

{Ed0333's Note - it’s a shame Sanchez couldn’t be that guy.

17 Jul 2019 21:00:05
Question for the eds or any of who have studied this one a bit: what are the pros and cons of young players going on loan? Thinking of our current group. Sometimes good players go out on loan and never make it back.

{Ed002's Note - It depends entirely on the club. At the top end, ech loan player from Chelsea has a liaison officer assigned (some are ex-players) who regularly see them, deal with any issues and report progress back to the club. For instance there was an issue with Lukaku and the club decided at the start of 2014 that he would be sold in the summer. His liaison tried very hard to reverse that decision, but to no avail. There was also a problem with a couple of players in the Netherlands and that resulted in the club having them get involved with spending some time with the local community (schools and charities). Chelsea has also helped clubs they have and are building relationships with - this may include providing training facilities, loaning coaching staff, having ex-players work with them in some capacity etc.. They have a structure in the Netherlands and Belgium in addition to relationships with South American and old Eastern Bloc countries. They are still working a deal with a Champions League side as well. In Italy I know that the clubs with a significant number of players on loan have regular contact and bring them back as a group for training on a couple of occasions mid-season. I am sure there will be someone at Liverpool keeping contact with the younger players on loan as they know there is a problem and are looking to fix it. Manchester United has a couple of long-term relationships with mainland European sides which have helped considerably in the past. Manchester City are building up their capability. Many clubs in Spain and Portugal have built relationships with other sides and it helps with brining in players from South America.}

1.) 18 Jul 2019 00:52:35
Thanks very much Ed002, that is very helpful.

21 Jun 2019 19:42:49
Any of the eds know if we have made any progress with signing either Issa Diop or Ruben Dias? Either one would be a great addition.

{Ed002's Note - What do you mean by progress. Ruban Dias (CB) - is heading elsewhere according to Jorge Mendes but he was very much a target for Mr Mourinho and I would not strike him from the list yet - as the side he was due to join did not see the value in the asking price and Benfica are looking to a new contract.
Issa Diop (CB) West Ham implied there has been some interest but they are not looking to sell the player.}

1.) 21 Jun 2019 21:45:40
Thanks, Ed002. Still hopeful we can sign one of these two.

2.) 21 Jun 2019 22:59:27
Dias is going to Bayern and Diop will be priced out of a move.

25 Apr 2019 19:08:01
Top four race:
We are on 64 points, can finish with 73. The Chelsea game this weekend is paramount. The last two we should win.

But then we will still need help. Chelsea are on 67 points, if we beat them, they can still get 73 and beat us on goal differential. So we will need Chelsea to draw or lose either game to Watford or Leicester City, both tough opponents. And they play two games vs Eintracht Frankfurt in Europe. So with Chelsea there seems a good chance for us.

Then we still need Arsenal to falter. They are on 66 points. Besides playing Valencia twice in Europe, they will play Leicester, Brighton Hove, and Burnley. Two wins and a draw and they will also beat us on goal differential. So we need an Arsenal loss.

So this Sunday looks massive. Arsenal vs Leicester and Chelsea coming to Old Trafford.

1.) 25 Apr 2019 19:42:01
Leicester, Watford and Burnley can give anyone a tough game. I wouldn't want to have to win against any of them.

I would be very surprised if Chelsea and Arsenal don't drop points against at least one of them.

The tricky thing is can we win our last three games. Chelsea on paper looks the toughest game. Yet both Huddersfield and Cardiff are relegation threatened. They will be fighting for their lives. If we don't match that desire then we will struggle against both of them.

On paper our run in looks slightly easier. Yet we have shown time and again that we can screw it up. There will be twists and turns yet. I still expect one of City or Liverpool to have a shock result which could change the direction the title heads in.

2.) 25 Apr 2019 19:53:24
I’d be surprised if we picked up any points before the end of the season with the way we’re playing.

3.) 25 Apr 2019 21:53:42
Huddersfield will be glad to hear they are only relegation ‘threatened’ Shappy. They are 20 points off safely with 3 games left, we would have to be pretty terrible there to not win. 3 wins and we will get top 4 in my opinion, we could even catch the goal difference up with a couple of big wins. Sunday is massive, lose and the season is over, win and it’s game on. With 2 penalties in the last 4 our only goals I would be tempted to think we will lose on Sunday but let’s get behind the lads and see if we can save this season.

4.) 25 Apr 2019 22:33:29
We’ve won the league with 79 points before haven’t we 😂.

5.) 25 Apr 2019 22:58:35
I don't think we will all 3 either.

To win games you need to score and we don't have players that can put the ball in the back of the net, it feels like they alergic to the goal.

6.) 25 Apr 2019 23:09:01
Gds catch up the goal diff 😂😂😂😂

Chelsea might play for the draw that just might just suit us.

{Ed002's Note - I would very much doubt that - a draw won't help Chelsea.}

7.) 26 Apr 2019 07:14:52
Top 4 is gone.

Reality still hasn't set in for some.

8.) 26 Apr 2019 08:24:03
Ken- it is not likely on current form, but a 4-0 win moves us above chelsea on goals scored. The same GD.

9.) 26 Apr 2019 13:20:09
Top 4 was gone in January. Now we have a chance, albeit remote. i'd have taken that in January.

10.) 27 Apr 2019 04:40:35
Not long ago we had title winning form. Now we lose a series of games in a row and everyone is disposable. Truth is, we are somewhere in between.

Most interesting story for us for the rest of the season is who will be in Ole's plans after the summer?

I don't think Martial suits his desire for high press. Neither does Mata or matic.

I'm convinced he wants a new CB to partner Lidelof.

I suspect he is duey eyed over pogba, but maybe better if he is traded away out of his control. IF (and it is a big if) we can find a good replacement.

DDG is not playing at a level that warrants a world record fee. Madness if we give him that.

19 Apr 2019 15:43:19
Mourinho quote about the Barcelona game:
"Lots of mistakes, lots of goals with awful defending on the inside foot. You look to Coutinho goal, even to Messi goal. " How would you explain what he means about the inside foot? I take it as a failure to force the player wide, but it's a phrase I have never heard. Does your inside foot mean your foot closer to the middle of the pitch? I want to hear how any of you might explain it.

1.) 19 Apr 2019 16:24:16
Showing the player inside, English isn’t his first language, but it seems fairly clear to me.

2.) 19 Apr 2019 16:27:21
Cutting inside.

3.) 19 Apr 2019 17:38:45
I agree with you zidaniel. I think that's what he means . They allowed him to cut in towards goal instead of forcing home wide.
In fairness messi does that just about every week and against every team he plays against. The theory is good but against messi its only theory because he can do what he wants he is that good.

4.) 19 Apr 2019 17:57:13
Jose said you need to put messi in a cage which is probably true .
Possibly the greatest of all time, though call between him and Maradona.

5.) 19 Apr 2019 19:58:49
Pele first. Cruyff second. Maradona third.

6.) 19 Apr 2019 20:37:23
Cough cough. Georgie Best. cough cough.

7.) 19 Apr 2019 21:16:55
No one better AJH.

8.) 19 Apr 2019 23:13:33
I'm glad someone remembered, Tony. :)

Utd Road, do you mean Moussa Dembele from Lyon or Ousman Dembele from Barcelona? I am assuming the striker from Lyon. The rumours make sense that some players say no, given our current situation. And if this fallout means that Andreas sits and Gomes gets more of a chance, I am all for it.

Either that or Rojo will become the new Michael Carrick and reinvent himself as a calm, composed defensive MF.

I really hope we get Dias or Milenkovic rather than Harry Maguire.

We were solid in the 5-3-2. The left side was balanced. Shaw looked comfortable as a LCB, less running required of him, and he defended well, and Telles looked good on the ball as the LWB, and his crossing is a major upgrade. Also, he whips in a consistent corner with a lot of bend. Very good debut.

PSG are over-reliant on their front three, lacking leadership and a hard edge at the moment. Marquinhos' absence hurt them a lot. Great effort by the lads all around with a lot of standout performances. Especially Tuanzebe. Ole got it right tonight.

I've got no problem with our front two today. Some mistakes, yes, but Marcus Rashford scored when it mattered.

If the rest factor is critical, we could go with a lineup like this on Tuesday:
Rashford, Martial, Greenwood
Pogba, Matic, Fred
Williams, Lindelof, Bailly, AWB
De Gea

I would take it.

Good post, Ken. I think Greenwood has clearly been better than James or Mata at RW.

Bailly or Lindelof is more of a debate. Lindelof seems to be considered a little steadier. Bailly has a touch of unpredictability about him, but is the best CB at closing down space.
