A January raid on Brugge for Tresoldi and Seys wouldn’t be a bad shout. 2 assists for the left back tonight, who was scouted in the summer. 2 of our problem areas strengthened.
I know that seems far too sensible for these clowns and the money probably isn’t there.

Ill be honest and say im in 2 minds on how the club will proceed this season and i forsee a few different options and scenarios based on what we are being fed.
Carrick in charge for villa. What might happen in intl break?
Sjr by all accounts as 2 directors with differing opinions.
Wilcox wants Howe
Vivell wants naglesman.
If he goes with wilcox vivell departs in the summer.
If he goes with Naglesman then wilcox departs now imo.
Id have less objection to Howe if he was not the choice of wilcox. He is an experienced coach.
Another scenario is that they do a deal with a preferred long term option for the beginning of next season say emery /huzlar and stick with carrick until the end of this season. This could pave the way for the exit of both vivell and wilcox and a new DOF to come in. Hope and help carrick turn things around with a few bodies in jan to try get european football.
Another option is to let Carrick go and appointing another interim if they bag a preferred target for next season.
Outside of the above i dont see many other outcomes.
04 Nov 2026 19:40:08
SJR should keep either Vivell or Wilcox only if the current or potentially new manager wants either or both of them. The manager has to be allowed to manage.
I would not be averse to Carrick staying if he stabilises things and we can see a clear upward trajectory and style of play.
If Carrick is not the preferred choice then ideally i would like the new manager to start asap otherwise waiting til the summer gives him less time to see which players can actually adapt to the style of play he wants and which players he wants to sell and buy.
I really can't see a top manager wanting to come in just as an interim manager.
05 Nov 2026 07:20:37
My objection to Howe isn't necessarily Howe himself, it's that plonker who is his assistant coming in with him!
05 Nov 2026 09:03:57
Tindall in an Amazon documentary come on ports that's box office mate lol.
04 Nov 2026 13:40:54
Question to the masses.
If the board can get an agreement to being in a primary target to coach us but they won't start until next season.
Eg emery, huzlar or fabregas.
What do you suggest we do for remainder of this season?
Im not saying this is the case but if it was.
04 Nov 2026 14:06:46
I think, history would suggest that if we can get a 1st choice target, Emery for example but not until the end of the season, then it would be wise to wait until then if that is their wish.
The issue is how you manage the rest of the season and the message it puts out to the players. Can Carrick realistically stay in charge? Who would come in and take the team til the end of the season and accept that is the role and timeline? Ideally you maybe look at getting someone who has worked with Emery previously who can start the process for him? Pako Ayestarán was Emery's assistant at Villa and was Beneitez Assistant at Liverpool. Perhaps they could come in? My concern is getting in someone with an idea of style until the end of the season and then the new manager starts with new ideas.
I think if they can secure Emery for example though, I think this makes Carrick's position very difficult and the right thing to do is move him on for all parties sake.
04 Nov 2026 18:04:01
Fabragas is a big no. What's he ever done for anyone to think he's up to a job this big?
If we sacked Carrick he's not the answer at all.
04 Nov 2026 18:51:48
He would not be my choice pspense but has been mentioned so thought i'd include him in the question.
@Redman i'd be interested in your view on this question as one of our more emtional supporters on this site.
I don't think any manager should leave his post mid season to join a rival club. In some leagues you are not allowed to move to clubs in same league mid season. One of the reasons the tranfer window was brought in was to give squad stability.
Amorim didn't want to come mid season but was presented with a now or never ultimatum.
I suppose the question could be howe now or wait 6 months for emery or huzlar? Maybe with a me DOF.
If that's the choice its quite the conundrum on how to manage this season.
04 Nov 2026 20:26:30
As an overall point I would align the managerial transfer window with the player one. Until there is anything formal then anything is fair game. Thing is the idiots who run our club wouldn't have see it as an issue in summer because they thought Carrick was the reincarnation of SAF.
I don't think we can be taken seriously if we keep Carrick, or put in another interim and even less if it is an ex player. Ole is eyeing it up but that would be a disaster.
This time I think we have to take the plunge with a full appointment. There are choices but before deciding I think we must establish the managers role, no one worth their salt would accept Wilcox managing the situation and taking credit for success, absolving himself in bad times. That needs to be defined before anyone takes the job and needs resolving quickly.
Personally I think we should look at Emery.
Emotional? Wrong poster Ken 😀.
04 Nov 2026 21:06:45
Redman if emery is not available until the summer which he has said then do you wait or go for a different one.
04 Nov 2026 21:32:47
Ken
Go for another one. Straight away. We must not look at another temp ex player.
04 Nov 2026 21:54:18
If huzlar agrees to come in summer i'd stick.
04 Nov 2026 22:10:27
Hurzeler is someone who I like very much. The two issues
1. Actual survival until the end of the season in the Premier League if they stay with Carrick, a dead man walking.
2.Would he come to what could be an even bigger mess in May.
04 Nov 2026 22:54:11
Interesting thread this one, and frankly probably the reason they've not yet sacked Carrick and wondering if this can last until summer.
05 Nov 2026 06:04:26
Looks like villa are using the speculation to give new contract to Unai.
So Hurzler is the new shiny name everyone impressed with now, is that not yet another gamble, because he doing well with Brighton. a well run club .seem to remember Potts done well with them and DiZerbi neither done anything since, hence Hurzler not for me, i would prefer someone who seen it and done it and got personality to handle a big club.
is that Hurzler i have no idea but i really don't want to take that gamble.
05 Nov 2026 08:48:35
Why is the option of keeping Carrick on even discussed. We'll be relegated if he stays. We are on a constant downward trend of performances since he came in. Howe is a good choice. Emery is probably first choice but will cost. Hurzeler is risky.
03 Nov 2026 16:21:57
One wonders what we could have got for Martinez in the summer after a decent showing in the World Cup, and who we could have bought as a replacement defender. Instead we will have to sell for far less in January or lose him for nothing in the summer. Another case of incredibly bad business decision making by the club.
03 Nov 2026 17:57:34
By all accounts the club were open to selling him this to Atletico, but they preferred Romero to him. I just don't think there's much of a market for small, injury and error prone central defenders.
04 Nov 2026 00:22:26
We paid 79m for a tall, slow, injury prone error prone defender.
04 Nov 2026 11:30:12
To be fair wasn't he injured? Maybe a new set of balls for him could have been nice for the lads in training.
04 Nov 2026 22:15:42
Martinez was in the World Cup team of the tournament. I think there would have been a market for him.
02 Nov 2026 13:56:36
I would sell Martinez but not Bruno, hasn't got going at all this season yet. Maybe the contract offer has offended him, don't know what it was or what he wants but maybe he feels his worth more. He just doesn't look happy at present.
02 Nov 2026 20:07:59
I think they both need to go before next season starts, whether that is January or summer.
I think they don't believe in the project anymore, or they realise it will take longer than they have left at the club.
I liken Bruno Fernandes during his time with us very much in the same mould as Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. He is the man that demands the ball, everything has to go through him, which when he's on form isn't a problem, but the moment his form drops the whole team performances drop. This is because no one else will step up and take responsibility while Bruno is there.
02 Nov 2026 21:45:27
What project. It's dawned on them there is no project. There has never been a project. wouldn't blame anyone for wanting out. They have been lied to.
03 Nov 2026 09:33:15
Both need to go. Bruno potentially, coukd bring in some much needed funds, to reinvest back into the squad. The January transfer window seems like a good time to do so, and quickly move on.
03 Nov 2026 11:43:35
Exactly. What project? We don't believe either.
03 Nov 2026 12:57:58
Project build a stadium while cutting costs, sillies. Our owners have been clear that they want lean staffing, lean wages, lean transfer windows, and instant success on the pitch. Players can either get with the project, or they'll be sold for a lean profit that will be invested in young hungry player that's the club's fourth choice signing.
02 Nov 2026 12:00:58
Lets assume a new manager comes in during the international break.
What would people think of cashing in on Bruno F (rumours of a Saudi bid in January) and Lisandro M (potential interest from Barca and Atletico) in January to try a mini rebuild with a centre back, left back and striker coming in.
Appreciate its high risk and January is not an ideal month to sign players but with a new manager coming in, he will want to add some freshness and new voices into the dressing room as soon as possible.
02 Nov 2026 13:00:36
Martinez, yes sell. Not good enough.
Selling Bruno in Jan is a massive risk. For years the squad has diverted to him to create chances. Obviously this has to change, but I'm not convinced that our players are cable of stepping up in his absence. They certainly haven't done so when Bruno hasn't played. I'm also not confident the club is willing or capable of bringing a player of his quality in as a replacement. It might be more sensible to keep Bruno until the summer and give the new manager a preseason to work on a new attacking system.
02 Nov 2026 14:33:54
I guess it will come down to where United are at this point in the season. Relegation battle then would be inclined to keep Fernandes, Top 4 challenge and the same outcome. Mid table and not threatening either end of the table then I guess cash in and look to start (the next) rebuild from January.
I think Martinez is trying to make the decision for the club IMO so give him what he wants in January.
02 Nov 2026 16:06:14
Can't see us challenging for top 4 by the beginning of the transfer window. If we find a bit of form then I could see us getting out of the relegation zone.. but that's a big if.
02 Nov 2026 23:51:01
If Bruno goes we have nobody who is anywhere near as creative as him. Tielemans will have to step up but he isn't as good.
Twfarding Martinez I fully expect him to go to Spain or Italy. Probably to Athletico Madrid to play with his Argentina centre back partner. Wherever he goes I think he will play well because he will be playing in a decent team and feel more settled less inclined to make rash challenges and enjoy his football. In an ideal world with the right coach o would keep him. He is s terrier, a fighter and we nerd that mentality albeit focused properly.
03 Nov 2026 16:26:03
Martinez is an awful CB no matter how you try to dress it up.
Small man syndrome too.
03 Nov 2026 19:24:25
Sell them both.
02 Nov 2026 09:44:45
Let's sack Carrick, yay everything will be great. I agree that Carrick looks list and bereft of ideas, and a new experienced Manager will have an impact. But:
Solskjaer wanted Haaland, they got him Ighalo.
Solskjaer wanted Bellingham, they got him Van de Beek.
Ten Hag wanted Kane, they spent £72m on Højlund.
Ten Hag wanted Rice, they got him Eriksen.
Ten Hag wanted Joao Neves, they spent £50.8m on Ugarte, while PSG used the money from Neves' sale to get Joao Neves.
Amorim wanted Watkins, they spent £73.7m on Sesko.
This summer, we had Elliot Anderson as priority, we ended up spending £55m on Andrey Santos.
Emery has done an awesome job at Villa but would he succeed in our mad house? Would anyone? 🤷♂️.
02 Nov 2026 09:49:53
Ole also told them to sign Haaland by all accounts.
02 Nov 2026 11:28:16
One of the biggest issues at the club is that it presents itself as bigger than it actually is.
This summer they prioritised going after midfielders that we can't afford. Looking at Anderson, Tonali, and Fernandes knowing that they were out of our spending capacity. The knock on effect is that we are always scrambling down the list for cheaper alternatives.
The likes of Brighton, Villa, Bournemouth aren't scouting players in this price range because they know what they can and cannot afford. That's why they find "bargains". United need to accept that the spending and wage restrictions we operate under make signing top class players impossible. Instead, our focus should be on scouting and identifying the best possible players with potential to make the jump to that level. By doing that, we won't be scrambling down our wish lists, we'll have a chance of bringing in our number one targets.
However, this approach would necessitate the club being honest about where we are. We'd need to stop blagging about being ready to compete for titles, and admit that we're a club working towards regular champions league football. It's no surprise that the players performed better last season when the pressure was off. I think a lot of their frustration comes from going into the season with a mid level squad that's expected to compete with the likes of City and Arsenal, rather than Brighton and Bournemouth.
04 Nov 2026 08:57:02
Hi AJH
United's recruitment has been so poor for so long, those players you listed that was bought most of them were free hits with no one else in the room bidding.
United have had the cash, some of the past managers hired have questionable quality but recruitment has been the biggest reason for the downfall and the wastage of money on the transfer market is unprecedented.
01 Nov 2026 22:09:31
Probably naans nothing, but SkyBet has tonight suspended the betting odds on Emery being next manager.
02 Nov 2026 00:44:55
The go great with curry though.
02 Nov 2026 07:26:58
Spellcheck is a wonderful thing 🤣
Apparently he wants to implement a tikka takka style.
02 Nov 2026 07:56:06
Dick Emery?
02 Nov 2026 12:17:01
Probably a reaction to a host of bets being placed due to rumours rather than them knowing anything we don't. Standard practice when they get a rush of bets.
02 Nov 2026 12:29:15
Only reason Carrick hasn't been sacked yet is that they've not announced him as the next James Bond yet. All part of Amazon's plan.
01 Nov 2026 13:52:14
I don't know whether this is true, but a search revealed that Carrick is on £5m a year but the club can sack him paying only for the remainder of this season. Hardly compares with the cost of relegation. A top manager is going to cost £10m+.
Now I have to admit as someone who is not fit to judge these things that Carrick had earned the chance, however I recall well Roy Keane being indignant about how United should go out and get the best manager they can. When pressed, however, he would not come up with a name. Gary Neville was also of the same opinion that the club should go out and get the best experienced manager available.
So, why didn't they do that? Was it all about control over transfers? The club wanted to take the responsibility for choosing players off the manager and put it on to the club hierarchy. ETH had been a disaster: Antony, Hojlund, Mount, Onana, Ugarte, de Ligt, Zirkzee, Malacia represent £400m. So Amorim and Carrick were hired as head coaches rather than managers. Truth is however, transfer policy had been poor to terrible since before SAF retired.
But any top manager would have looked at the club and made conditions about transfers and budget, insisting on some positions being dealt with. Could you imagine Ancelotti allowing the club to go into the season with this array of defenders? Would he have really wanted to invest £48m on yet another potential star like Santos in midfield when what we needed was proven players to step up immediately?
Right now nothing is going right. I think all of us put the primary blame on the ownership. The rot starts at the top. Many of us are so desperate we would countenance relegation if it would somehow pry the club away from the Glazers and Ineos. Unfortunately at this time, with all the uncertainty in the world, I don't see a white knight stepping forward and meeting their price. However, the cost of relegation would be enormous.
01 Nov 2026 14:01:26
Job title change or not, it was always reported that ETH, as with others before, didn't get their first choices nor choose how much was spent on the ones that came in. So again it points to someone/people higher up not doing a good enough job in either choosing or negotiating.
Surely any potential manager/head coach out there has seen that too, would make you wonder why anyone would take the job without assurances of having the set up they want.
01 Nov 2026 14:23:12
For me the problems start with Wilcox. He seems to want to micro-manage the club and has created more issues than we even know about. He fell out with both EtH and Amorim over trying to dictate tactics to them. He ignores the advice of Vivell on transfers (you know our head of recruitment), and it seems he chose to hire Carrick due to Carrick being more prepared to accept his "support". He also was a factor behind Ashworth leaving the club and him taking Ashworth's position.
While I agree that the idea behind allowing managers to pick their own transfers and build the team in their image, is a bad blue print long term. Having a DoF who controls things behind the scenes without taking any responsibility when it goes wrong is equally disastrous.
The idea is that we have an overarching philosophy, and we build and recruit to fit that. That philosophy shouldn't be over prescriptive.
Something like trusting in youth, developing young players, and playing an attacking, aggressive, front foot style of play. Is fine, it gives you a clear direction, but leaves room to manoeuvre within it.
It sets out the kind of players we should be looking to sign (but doesn't rule out signing the occasional older player when necessary). It ensures we continue our traditions of youth development. While it gives the club and managers a degree of tactical flexibility and support. You could be a high pressing side with or without possession, how you look to build attacks, a d defend is fairly open to adapting depending on the players available and/or the tactical landscape.
Then you hire managers who fit within that idea. They should be managers with a track record of giving youth a chance and developing younger players into top level talents. They should also be managers who look to play an aggressive, offensive style of football.
That's your first two filters when looking, anyone who doesn't trust or develop young players isn't the right manager for our club.
Likewise, anyone who will look to play slow, or defensive football isn't the right manager for our club.
Then you can start shifting through the remaining options for more specific skills and experience (winning titles/cups or exceeding expectations, managed in specific leagues or competitions, media savvy, a certain level of experience, dressing room management, language skills, specific coaching tactics that fit/suit the current team, etc). Ultimately whatever it is they feel the manager needs to have to be successful. The reality is that it's rare a person is the perfect fit, especially in football management. That isn't a problem as long as you understand what those short comings are and how you can support them or bridge that gap. For example maybe you have a manager who lacks a little in terms of experience, can you ensure they have a more experienced head or two amongst their coaching staff.
The problem with our club right now is the man who is really steering the ship is Wilcox, and every time he gets to make a major decision we get a little worse for it.
01 Nov 2026 18:47:40
As the fans sang yesterday, Jason Wilcox is a planker is a planker.
31 Oct 2026 15:31:00
First half was very good, working hard, created numerous chances should have been well ahead. Same players and Manager but more effort. Real game of 2 halves, how Maguire gets away with such little criticism is beyond me, he actually steps out of way for their opener to let Rogers a clear run into the box, then has a laugh with Rogers up the other end during our corner. But Martinez obviously was the main culprit, a world cup winner with a serious chip on his shoulder, when he spoke about more signings, he failed to understand that it was him we should be replacing.
He hasn't been the same player since his injury. Could and should be sold in Jan if we get any decent offer. Just put Yoro and Heaven in their, give them a chance, can't get any worse, no clean sheet all season.
31 Oct 2026 16:01:35
Redcon1,
I agree with you Buddy.
31 Oct 2026 17:07:17
Yes Redcon, quite right.
I think Martinez has checked out and sees himself at Barcelona next summer. let's see if a deal can be done with Barca in January with maybe one of their player's who is likely to leave, perhaps Balde or a midfielder.
Think Leny Yoro should be playing Centre Back, he has been decent of late and deserves to play his proper position. Whilst he is not electric, he has decent pace and we need to get some in the centre of defence.
31 Oct 2026 20:02:43
He will pair up with Romero.
31 Oct 2026 21:00:13
Don't even start me on Maguire. I am a self confessed hater of him as a player and will not be swayed.
He is absolutely pants and not a leader on the park either vocally or by example. Should never have been signed and definitely not for the joke price we paid.
If pointing, cutting needless holes in your socks, claiming offside for nearly every goal conceded, pulling your pants up for corners, adjusting your fringe or being out of position more times than a virgin looking for the G-spot then he is superb!
Seaweed is a perfect name for him. Floats around aimlessly. But in fairness to him there are another 20 players that need to look in a mirror.
SAD SAD DAYS!
31 Oct 2026 21:49:44
Keefy that's not fair mate, Maguire marks very closely at corners granted it's our players he holds on to but it's easy to get the shirts confused lol.
31 Oct 2026 23:38:25
I'm with you on that Keefy. He is pants, always has been. Whoever gave him an extension should be fired.
31 Oct 2026 23:59:21
Yeah fair call Tim. My bad.
01 Nov 2026 11:14:48
Got to go and get Conte surely? There is nobody else out there right now who can do what he can.
01 Nov 2026 10:56:22
Martinez has Athletico Madrid all over him. An aggressive team that plays on the brink of bad sportsmanship to win at all costs. That's not a criticism, I think a lot of South American players approach the game in this way. It's a bit of a jump to biting people, but what Louis Suarez said back in the day about being bought up to win at any cost probably rings true with lots of players of a certain culture.
In England it's more about fair play and gentlemanly conduct. Maybe it's gone against us over the years. Then again every single player goes down to get any free kick and rolls around feigning injury to get player's booked so maybe there's a touch of bad sportsmanship in everyone.
01 Nov 2026 14:42:18
What is really disappointing is that we appeared to make such great strides under Amorim in terms of sorting out the dressing room.
The leaks stopped, the cliques seemed to disappear, the players and the manager were united in what they were doing/aiming for.
We thought (and maybe we were mostly right) that a big part of that was removing certain players from the squad (Sancho, Garnacho, Rashford etc).
However, this season it is right back to where we were before. I've already posted that I don't think Rashford returning has been a good thing at all. Especially as it was his attitude along with his position as a senior player that made his poor choices carry a bigger weight.
I also think it's very hard for a manager like Carrick to come in and manage players like Shaw and Rashford who used to be his teammates. Especially as both Shaw and Rashford have had their professionalism questioned on several occasions.
If Carrick is unable to discipline them properly when they don't show the right attitude/commitment, then it sets the tone for the rest of the squad.
It's a hard thing to become your friends boss and then not treat them differently to the other employees.
The other issue is that one bad apple can turn the whole fruit bowl rotten. I think we are seeing that in how Martinez is currently acting. Previously his commitment and fighting spirit was there for all to see. He became one of my favourite players in the squad due to his never say die attitude and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the club. Yet that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.
People rarely change, certainly not significantly, what does change is their surroundings and what is influencing them.
Martinez hasn't suddenly become a player/person who isn't a fighter, he just isn't fighting for us anymore. Something seems to have changed that means he is fighting for himself rather than the club. As seen with his comments aimed at Wilcox, and his petulant behaviour yesterday.
Bruno is the same, until recently he'd never thrown the club or a manager under the bus. He could actually in a petulant way on the pitch, but he was a model professional with the media. What has changed to make him act differently.
02 Nov 2026 05:29:43
Those players who were fighters, don't have a cause to fight for anymore. The upper management have failed them, time and time again.
