Heard Alfie Doughty from Luton is being looked at for LB. Any one seen him play and have thoughts on him?

Jacko

1.) 19 Mar 2024 20:11:58
Yep he’s been really good for Luton this season, a solid FPL pick too. He has really good delivery, and was probably their best player when we played them in February. I think he plays more as a wing back in Luton’s setup.

2.) 20 Mar 2024 02:11:01
I like both their eing backs. But it's very different in a back 4 so we're judging a player in 1 position but he'll be asked to play a different one. Both have good delivery.

23 Jun 2022 18:44:21
There’s little to no rumours of us signing a holding midfielder- which I would think is a priority.
Has anyone heard anything?
Thanks ??.

Jacko

{Ed002's Note - I have previously explained where the interest is.}

1.) 23 Jun 2022 21:53:41
Fdj has been linked since the season ended. He will be our no6 if signed jacko.

2.) 23 Jun 2022 23:45:24
EtH said previously he is at his best playing in a 2 man 6 system. Said that when he introduced that De Jong took strides forward.

25 May 2022 22:11:44
Reading the posts - United interested in Torres snd Timber amongst other targets
Is it one signing or two?
Would that mean more sales than Bailly and Jones?
Will Tuanzebe be sold this window? He’s shown great promise as a kid but hasn’t really kicked on.

Jacko

{Ed002's Note - Tuanzebe will leave as well.}

1.) 25 May 2022 23:30:24
Would not be surprised if it is both. Would allow for Bailly ane Lindelof to leave and generate funds. We could move to a back 3 or Timber has positional flexibility, we also don't know whether Verane can last a full season.

2.) 26 May 2022 05:21:58
For whatever reasons Tuanzebes chance has gone now. I think Bailly and Jones out is almost certain and there must be a huge question mark over Lindelof- If a bid came in from an Italian or Spanish club where its less physical I can see Lindelof going- never been strong enough, fans are lukewarm about him he just doesn't seem to fit at United.

3.) 26 May 2022 08:02:24
I think it would be easy to get carried away with these fantasies of selling half the squad. We'll need at least 4-5 players capable of playing CB against top teams so imagine we'll be stuck with Lindelof/ Maguire/ Varane for the coming season at least.

4.) 26 May 2022 08:16:58
I doubt EtH will sell Lindelof, he's actually pretty well suited to his style of play. Good passing range, mobile and capable of defending in the wide areas.

5.) 26 May 2022 09:06:39
And still no rumours of Maguire leaving……despite the price tag I think he’s the weakest one out of him, Lindelof and Bailly.

6.) 26 May 2022 09:35:48
Lindelof is targetted by every robust striker in the PL he is as weak as a kitten-if ETH doesn't see that then the defensive problems will continue.

7.) 26 May 2022 09:46:24
Bailly, Lindelof and Maguire aren't good enough in my opinion but the best thing a player can be is available. Bailly simply never is, his injuries have been an issue since his first season and he should be first out of the door in my opinion.

On our CB's, I'm really wanting to see Mengi given a chance at some pointas he looks like he could be a good player. It's all well and good having these promising young players, however, if they never get the chance or we send them to a club that has been picked out of a hat on loan they will stall. We've seen it with plenty of players in the past few years, Fosu Mensah, Henderson, Gomes, Tuanzebe, Dalot etc. Not saying all or even any of them would have become world beaters but their treatment when they were clearly too good for u23's hasn't been great at United and we've seen too many not live up to what they possibly could have been due to it.

8.) 26 May 2022 12:59:08
RJ have to agree. Fosu Mensah was the big one I think. Tuanzebe been very unlucky with injuries at the wrong time. If memory serves right he picked on up as he was about to start v liverpool a couple of years ago and he really looked like breaking into the team.

9.) 26 May 2022 20:07:05
Tuanzebe had it all, strong, quick, good on the ball, and was a real leader at youth level.

He showed real promise in his games for United. Played with a maturity beyond his years.

Unfortunately he got injured at bad moments meaning he missed chances and his development stalled because of that.

It's a shame but he needs to move on for the sake of his career now, although it might have to be a drop down to the championship to prove himself before he might be able to make his way up to the EPL.

19 Jul 2019 23:50:28
Is it going to be a case of Matic out and Matuidi in?

Jacko

1.) 20 Jul 2019 05:43:44
One old player for another?

2.) 20 Jul 2019 06:57:23
Is it case of don't believe everything you red in a newspaper.

3.) 20 Jul 2019 10:05:48
If it’s in the press then it’s happening, I’d put huge amounts of money on it if I were you.

4.) 20 Jul 2019 11:26:27
AJH,

Lol hahah.

Rumour that United have struck a deal with Longstaff from Newcastle

Has this got any truth behind it?

Jacko

{Ed002's Note - You know that there is interest and there have been talks.}

1.) 12 Jul 2019 06:44:01
We will probably be priced out of a move.

2.) 12 Jul 2019 07:18:23
After OGS’s comments about paying the right price for players - possibly echoing Woodward/ Judge’s own thoughts - it wouldn’t surprise me if we left all transfer business to the last minute and even ended up getting no one. We’re waiting for Pogba/ Kukaku desks to be sorted and there looks to be a stasis in the meantime - and these sagas will probably drag on. Then there’s the inflated fees that United are always quoted so, what with not wanting to pay inflated fees BUT with all other issues going on as well, just seems like it’s all a bit squeaky bum at the moment. Thus, though I really hope tho he get sorted and the right players come in while the wrong players move out, it really can’t be easy for United in the transfer market at the moment.

3.) 12 Jul 2019 09:30:14
And today "United are put off by the 50m price tag" news. I like him very much, but c'mon 50m.

4.) 12 Jul 2019 09:51:08
50 million is a joke. We have a few youngsters now who could make the 1st team. time we looked at a couple of players with good footballing experience, to help the young one's reach their potential.
Can't win anything with youngsters.
Just ask Alan Hansen.

5.) 12 Jul 2019 11:38:02
the line that shines out to me "it wouldn’t surprise me if we left all transfer business to the last minute and even ended up getting no one" I'm guessing we've done our business already. The msm are doing their bit for our owners / woodwards ego linking us to all and sundry, but I can see a backline of shaw smalling jones and young next season expecting them to have developed a footballing brain over the last month.

6.) 12 Jul 2019 12:16:09
'£50 million' is just the new '£30 million'. I wouldn't worry about what the newspapers are saying. No way we'll be paying that money for Longstaff.

7.) 12 Jul 2019 12:18:10
Wan Bissaka will be a bit annoyed if he's bought for 50m and doesn't feature in our backline.

8.) 12 Jul 2019 12:19:47
just heard from a customer (we are not far from sjp) that talks are ongoing for longstaff and that they will progress further after new manager is appointed by ashley and that newcastle valuation is reportedly high as they are interested in taking rojo as part of the deal.
I stress its just a rumour but how good would that be!

9.) 12 Jul 2019 12:32:34
Cookyman if we can sign Longstaff AND get rid of Rojo at the same time, well that would be a great bit of business!

10.) 12 Jul 2019 12:33:36
Wallace, congratulations mate you won the most pessimistic negative post of the day award. How you read that from Ole’s comments God only knows. The Ed has said where the interest lies and we will look to get players for the right price, I don’t really understand the problem.

11.) 12 Jul 2019 13:13:53
Really odd fixation with price of players on here. None of us have any grasp or reference points as to what these numbers actually mean except they sound big.

If Longstaff has been identified as a the next great thing, and if he comes in a runs our midfield for 10 years, what has the fee got to do with us. Leave that to the accounts and enjoy our rebuild.

12.) 12 Jul 2019 13:17:46
Longstaff in and Rojo out will probably be our best exchange deal ever.

13.) 12 Jul 2019 13:19:06
Wazza - just hope the guys info was correct . Saying that there was a rumour Roma were looking at taking lascelles off the geordies so they could be in for a cb. Still a month to go yet so fingers crossed.

14.) 12 Jul 2019 15:18:55
GDS2:

My point was that United can’t be finding it easy in the transfer market because of multiple factors.

So you think they are finding it easy and everything going to plan?

15.) 12 Jul 2019 19:01:38
No I don’t think any club finds it easy these days, prices are inflated and not many English clubs need the money.

16.) 12 Jul 2019 19:00:17
I'll piggy back that useless injury prone reckless red card awaiting squad clogging wage drain up there myself.

24 Feb 2024 22:26:56
We’ve had two Dutch managers now - and it hasn’t been good by either
I hoped to see a progressive style of play with us comfortable on the ball but it’s down to individuals
I can’t imagine ETH being in post next season but we’ve had lots of managers and little progress - does anyone know why?

Jacko

1.) 25 Feb 2024 01:37:52
The whole club is a mess, the recruitment including the recruitment of the manager has been a joke for years.

2.) 25 Feb 2024 07:55:46
What does nationality have to do with it?

That’s like saying SAF and David Moyes are the same no?

3.) 25 Feb 2024 08:01:52
Gds2 that's true but I'm now 100% convinced eth is not the man to sort it and I'm 100% convinced that he won't be given the opportunity after this summer.

4.) 25 Feb 2024 08:53:45
I'll be surprised if he makes it to summer! I like to think I'm always behind players and manager, but we just aren't progressing atm. The thing that worries me more than anything is who will replace him? Managers are like strikers atm, not that many good ones about .

5.) 25 Feb 2024 13:26:07
Nice enough fella but not good enough for United. Again, I don't know who would be but if you imagine a room with SJR/ NEW CEO/ Brailsford/ dan Ashworth on one side of a desk and ETH on the other being appraised for his last 2 years would they be impressed enough to give him a new contract? I think not.

6.) 25 Feb 2024 12:55:51
It's hard not to overreact after a defeat. It's a frustrating team to support. We beat Villa and Spurs lose, gaining ground on both, then the week later lose a cheap game against a side assembled much cheaper than ours (without Palinha even playing) who should have won a lot easier than they eventually did.
The manager insists he was pleased with the character we showed and that we're on the right track. He has to say those things but they're hard to go along with.
I'd like to think it was purely down to the mess that saw us forced to play Rashford through the middle again, a tactic that hasn't given any joy all season, simply as there was no other alternative. I hear the calls to play McT or even Diallo there and personally think he did the only thing he could. The bigger issue is the whole Martial saga, a player that's been more unavailable than available in his years with us. I don't even know what the injury is, if he's a flake, or is just happy to watch from the sides and pick up his dosh. He doesn't strike me as a player busting a gut to get fit and play a part. Even then when he is fit he's not made an impact for ages.
Yet Liverpool, City and Arsenal have all lost their main striker this season and are still all fighting it out at the top.
There are much 'lesser' sides assembled much cheaper who are more enjoyable to watch and you know what you're going to get each week. With Utd it's like a lucky dip, and the wins are usually by the skin of their teeth.
Unless we get some form of European football I don't see how the manager stays, with all the other changes being made around him. It may well be viewed that the next manager just gets another patchwork quilt with yet another assortment of players to blend but I guess all managers are in the same boat in that regard. I guess Onana, Martinez and Hojlund are here for the long haul but not so sure about Antony/ Eriksen/ Malacia.
Massive few months ahead and we had been on a nice run. Just a bit frustrating that the games we'd expect to win can't ever be counted on which is the nature of the Prem.

7.) 25 Feb 2024 14:40:26
Glad people are finally coming round to the fact ETH is not good enough….

But did I just read it right not many good managers about atm.
Nagglesman
Flick
Zidane
Tuchel will be
Conte
Jose
Potter
Low
Xavi

That’s just the ones who are out of work atm, so if we want none of them there will be the ones they replace!

8.) 25 Feb 2024 15:14:05
Quite a few of those managers are deemed (and have proved) to be quite difficult characters. But suppose it doesn't always need to be a problem if they're doing a good job. Would be interested in what Nagglesman does next but obviously Bayern didn't like something about the way he went about things. But please not Potter, nice guy I'm sure but I don't feel he's able to step up as he's proved.

9.) 25 Feb 2024 15:56:41
Bayern is difficult to manage as us, always under spotlight in Germany and lots of interference from directors, ex players, etc…. So would not put much on that.

That’s without Southgate even being on that list which is most worrying.

Potter not for me either, but I am not sure it’s been proved he is no good, you can’t take Chelsea fiasco into it.

10.) 25 Feb 2024 16:21:16
Dutch people can come off very direct in my opinion, not always the best cultural fit.

11.) 25 Feb 2024 16:45:34
It's a big blot on his copy book and he would not be my choice. But frankly all of our opinions are irrelevant when it comes to choosing.

12.) 25 Feb 2024 18:09:04
The grass is always greener fellas.

13.) 26 Feb 2024 07:10:02
Isn't Nagelsmann Germany coach until the end of the Euros? Tuchel might be a good manager, but I think he is more suited to the continent that the Premier League, the others on the list feel like yesterday's men, like including Sparky and Bruce.

The only other option is to look at the next generation of managers like Alonso, Amorim, de Zerbi or even Farioli, but that can be still hit and hope and probably for the moment best to stick with EtH, it is just one bad season after all.

18 Jul 2023 19:56:02
After signing a striker - is it a matter of selling before buying?
And is re-signing Jonny Evans - on a short term contract but “keeping an open mind” - to free up funds to strengthen midfield?

Jacko

1.) 19 Jul 2023 07:57:21
I hope so, but who knows. For me personally if one of Martinez or Varane is out injured or suspended, I feel more comfortable having Lindelof play then if Casemiro is out injured or suspended and one of McTominay or Fred have to play instead.

On that basis alone I feel that wee need a better alternative to Casemiro than we need a better 3rd choice CB.

2.) 19 Jul 2023 08:16:53
I think Ambrabat comes in but looks like no CD unless we move Maguire and a surprise name/ signing imo.

Disasi, who we have been linked with, will probably be gone by then. The korean guy went to Bayern for a lot less than was being reported in the media and the Disasi quoted figures are on par with the Korean guy. IF we passed on the Korean guy can't see us paying that for Disasi.

On another note it seems like a lot of numbers being reported in the media is overinflated and deals getting done at lower numbers for most clubs with exception of a few players.

Arsenal seem to be paying full tarrif on their transfers and none of the 3 are worth the money imo.

3.) 19 Jul 2023 11:04:56
Frankly, I'd rather have Evans back for a season as 4th choice CB than Maguire. Evans is more intelligent in his positioning and reading of the game, enough to cover at least somewhat for his lacking mobility.

Get as much as possible for Maguire, keep Evans as a backup CB, and put the money from Maguire towards Hojlund and Amrabat.

If we can clear out some of the deadwood, while bringing in Onana, Mount, Amrabat and Hojlund, I'll be reasonably happy with this summer. I'd ideally hope for a second striker as well, someone good if not spectacular (Ollie Watkins was mentioned here recently, he'd do IMO if he could be brought in for a reasonable price), but just those 4 would still be a good window IMO, and give us a solid foundation to build off in January or next summer.

4.) 19 Jul 2023 11:32:09
I don’t think centre half is too big a concern for us tbh. Apart from his big injury I think Martinez will prove to be a pretty robust player for us. Varane is obviously fragile but I don’t see Lindelof as a bad alternative at all. We can’t carry Maguire obviously, but in Jonny Evans it’s a profile that will suit us perfectly. I don’t think he’ll play much at all. Agree that we need another player in to push/ deputise for Casemiro. That and a striker are priorities and I’d be more than happy with that going into the new season.

04 Jun 2023 21:33:05
Fingers crossed for new owners this week - anybody got any news on the sale?

Jacko

1.) 05 Jun 2023 00:52:23
Man Utd is a public company quoted on the US exchanges. There are rules as to the timing of announcements in order to prevent insiders profiting from advance knowledge. There will be a public announcement. Until then there is only conjecture.

I do find it interesting that 6 months after this distasteful haggling saga began, the share price values the company at only $3.07bn approx 1/ 2 the £5bn+ offers bandied around in the press. Makes me think they haven't received an offer anywhere near their £6bn valuation, and they won't be selling at all.

Or is it worth a punt?

2.) 05 Jun 2023 07:23:16
I doubt the Glazers are looking at the share price for a true value, they will be looking at the value of NFL teams as a comparison, with the Commanders currently being sold for around £4.8bn.

Their benchmark will be the Cowboys which is worth around £6.5bn, I think they would have been surprised and maybe disappointed only 2 bidders showed interest in an outright purchase and a bidding war didn't emerge, however the £1bn of debt and the need for a new stadium pushing the real price up to £7-8bn might have been a factor, who knows.

3.) 05 Jun 2023 08:49:39
I was with people associated with the club after the FA cup and no one knows anything on where things stand or going. Either its the best kept secret ever or something not right with the whole thing not going to plan.

I agree its about time, we hear something of substance from the club and not all the speculation through the media channels. Either they pull it or announce a winning bid.

4.) 05 Jun 2023 12:31:14
The share price is an indicator of outside investor sentiment. If the club is really worth or is going to sell next week for £5bn net of debt wouldn't it make sense to buy up the non-Glazer owned outstanding non-voting shares at 1/ 2 the price?

Completely different metrics for valuing a US franchise system sports club. They're private companies operating in a closed shop. There's no promotion or relegation, or qualification for international tournaments, and they have salary caps which in effect enables them to lock in profits for the long term. There's a degree of certainty. These are the reasons why the top European clubs wanted a European Super League. and why they'll probably try again.

03 Dec 2022 09:25:00
Morning all
Is Gapko seen as a CF or wide player?
And would you rather have Felix or Gapko?
Fantasy football?
I like the idea of United looking at players in the up rather than the aging stars on the decline.

Jacko

1.) 03 Dec 2022 10:06:22
Difficult to say for sure. He has typically played as a LW player for PSV. Yet he is capable of playing right across the front line and even as a No.10.

Some people say he is best off the left, others think he might develop into a central player in a similar fashion to Thierry Henry. However, I remember some people saying something similar about Rashford a few years ago.

I'd say from what I've seen along with a little common sense that if he were to move to a top club in one of Europe's top five leagues that he would be better off playing wide while he adapts and steps up from the Eredivisie. He may eventually develop into a more central player, or even a deeper player in the mould of a No.10. But right now I'm not convinced he's a starting No.9 for a team in the EPL with UCL ambitions.

However, if the manager thinks he is I will defer to his greater knowledge of the player.

As for who would I prefer? Tough to say, Gakpo and Felix are different players and neither are currently natural No.9's which is what I think we really need. I'd probably shade it for Gakpo because he is in the ascendancy rather than a player who has stagnated, he would be cheaper in both transfer fee and wages, and I think his size and strength would mean he would acclimatise to the more physical and pacy EPL.

I also much prefer the idea of the club looking to sign young up and coming players rather than players either seen as in their peak or even on the decline.

Typically I think United have had far greater success making young players into stars rather than buying ready made star players.

2.) 03 Dec 2022 12:04:35
Even the player admits he is a LW and that LVG had to convince him he could play as the central striker for Holland. So he's certainly adaptable. Also his three goals at the WC have been a real mixed bag - header, left foot, right foot. The whole package. or just another Dutch player we're always going to be linked with?
Personally I can see both sides. It makes sense that the manager is more familiar with these players, and knows if they'll fit his system. It's worked out so far with everyone else he's signed. But maybe a weakness too, being pigeon-holed with the same players because of this and maybe overlooking others.
As for Felix, can't see this at all simply because of the money involved. He's hardly prolific at the £100m+ Athletico paid, loan or not. Surely there are others.

3.) 03 Dec 2022 13:01:02
We will be linked with every half decent Dutch player over the next few years until either EtH leaves or until there have been a few windows without us buying a Dutch player.

Arsenal had the same thing with Arsene Wenger, with every half decent French player being linked to Arsenal for years.

So expect us to be linked with Bijlow, Timber, Rensch, Dumfries, Frimpong, Gravenberch, Taylor, Depay and Gakpo for the time being.

4.) 03 Dec 2022 13:02:29
I think it would be an unnecessary risk to spend money on transfer fee and wages on a player who can maybe develop into a centre forward.

If we already had a reliable striker in the squad then it would be a different story but we don't so should focus on someone who is experienced in that position.

5.) 03 Dec 2022 14:32:29
Personally I don't expect any expenditure on a grand scale this window.
We may offload a couple of fringe or unwanted players from donny awb tuanzebe jones pellistrini coupled with the saving on ronaldos wages it should allow for some outlay.
The most pressing need is to replace ronaldo in attack. Eth will sign who he thinks fits best from who's available and viable.
If he thinks gakpo is the man then he's the one I want. If he thinks Felixstowe is the man then he's the one I want.

6.) 03 Dec 2022 16:21:51
I think it would probably be quite irresponsible not to at least attempt to bring in a striker in January given our natural CF options. But then again depends who is obtainable. It would be more irresponsible to spend silly money on another wrong player again. They've done everything right so far in the market. The only dumbfounding oversight is how Phil Jones has started once in twenty years yet still earns quarter of a million quid a week.

7.) 03 Dec 2022 16:39:00
Proper 9s seem to be out of fashion at the moment, there are not so many around. I thought Croatian guy, Krameric looked a good player this world cup.

Only player we seem to have links to that fit that mold is harry Kane, who is also not a pure striker these days and I can't see us ever getting.

Hopefully EtH is setting a few things right in the club and we get some players through the scouting system.

With any luck McGuire's stock rises enough to get a sale.

We are heavily reliant on varane, cassemiro, eriksen and dare I say it, Martial. We have a good first team with all those guys fit and firing. But all of them are missing too many games or coming towards the latter part of their careers.

Still a huge transition ahead for our squad.

8.) 04 Dec 2022 05:20:38
I just see this all of eric targets or signings have been having been playing really good.
Casemiro, Martinez and Eriksen have been excellent.
Malacia and antony have been good.

Arnautovic is one of the highest serie a goalscorers, Rabiot has had an excellent season with Juve.

FDJ has been amazing for Dutch, Dumfries was amazing yesterday and Gakpo has been unstoppable.

That Eric Ten Hag certainly has an eye for talent and has restored rashford back when it looked like rashford was done.

Older or younger or controversial player, but if ETH wants him, I think he will be a success.

9.) 04 Dec 2022 09:02:34
Yes rohan.

10.) 04 Dec 2022 16:35:14
Hi rohan.

14 Aug 2022 19:24:52
Icardi doesn’t get a game at PSG.
What qualities or baggage would he bring to United?
Tbf anyone would be better than that shower of rubbish yesterday.

Jacko

1.) 14 Aug 2022 19:43:00
We need ball progressers and a RB before anything else,
Icardi won't score if he never gets the ball.

2.) 14 Aug 2022 22:10:54
im reading he is only interested in a loan deal, don't know if that's true but for all his baggage how much harm could he do within 9 months -especially if he puts a shift in on the pitch?

As there are no comments from any of the Eds so far - I'm thinking that there are no legs in this.
Would he partner Schneiderlin or be competition for that place? would this mean that Felliani is OK for transfer?

Ed002 - I love your responses - they simply answer the question asked - ha! Which CB's do you think are of interest to United at the moment?

Thanks in advance of any response.

Jacko

I don't know about Evans being included in a deal for Stones but I'd take a straight swap for a shiny pebble right now based upon last few seasons

If true this continues Woodwards strategy of bidding less than is required to purchase the player as done all the way through the window

If they are trying to do that so that they can say they have tried - that won't pacify the fans

And why wait to the end of the window before randomly bidding for him? Doesn't sound right to me but I would take anyone right now over TC23.

I’ve got a good feeling that we will win at weekend- even though it’s against form

Ed001 you mentioned EtH sticking with Maguire - I also think that DDG adds to the whole team being nervous too. The cost of replacing them both would be significant - are the club looking to replace and sell?
Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - not that I am aware of no.}

I think people are being harsh on Ashley Young - never United quality but at least he tries.

Darmian a good shout too
For me Mata and Sánchez lack the pace of the league
And Lukaku has the touch of a Bulgarian midwife
We have kids who deserve a chance and I’d supplement them with a new signing up front.
